Deuses ou Demônios? Our study is the discourse and rhetoric that M and the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God used to talk about the african-Brazilian religions and mediums in this book.We chose this book as an object of study because of the constant presence of this theme in the discourse and practices of the Universal Church, the success of the publication, with over four million copies sold, according to the controversy caused by the discourse of religion demonized african-brazilian and abilities. We tried to analyze the speech of Macedo and his Church the light of the impacts and predicaments caused by them in the religious landscape of Brazil. We list the discourse and rhetoric of to success and the creation of an identity of his Church. Our study differs from other investigations already published relating to the creation of religious identity and the use of accusatory mechanisms as an effective tool to convince and convey ideologies that promote the expansion of the Universal Church. We seek to bring to the academic discussion that the analysis of discourse of a religious literature can be a reference to study a religious institution, its mechanisms of identity, legitimacy and development in the religious landscape.(AU) / Esta dissertação é uma análise do discurso de Edir Macedo no livro Orixás, Caboclos e Guias. Deuses ou Demônios? Nosso estudo trata do discurso e retórica que Macedo e a Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus utilizam para falarem a respeito das religiões afro-brasileiras e mediúnicas nesse livro. Elegemos este livro como objeto de estudo por causa da presença constante desse tema no discurso e nas práticas da Igreja Universal; pelo sucesso dessa publicação, com mais de quatro milhões de exemplares vendidos; em função da polêmica provocada pelo discurso demonizador das religiões afro-brasileiras e mediúnicas. Procuramos analisar o discurso de Macedo e de sua Igreja a luz dos impactos e impasses causados por eles no cenário religioso brasileiro. Relacionamos o discurso e a retórica de Macedo ao sucesso e a criação de uma identidade própria de sua Igreja. Nosso estudo diferencia-se das demais investigações já publicadas ao relacionar a criação de identidade religiosa e o uso de mecanismos acusatórios como instrumento eficaz para convencer e transmitir ideologias que favoreçam a expansão da Igreja Universal. Procuramos também, trazer para a discussão acadêmica que a análise de discurso de uma literatura religiosa pode ser uma referência para se estudar uma instituição religiosa, seus mecanismos de construção identitaria, legitimação e expansão no cenário religioso.(AU)

This report analyzes the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God)—a Brazilian neo-Pentecostal church—by its capacity to enchant everyday life in modern, disenchanted worlds. It provides a history of the church, a cultural biography of its founder, and a description of the church’s demonology and ritual life. It argues that through ritual performance, members come to embody the church’s discourse of biblical sacrifice. This process enchants their lives and sanctifies their participation in modern, disenchanted institutions such as late capitalism and medical science. It further argues that previous scholarship has interpreted neo-Pentecostal churches from an implicitly ethical perspective that is rooted in Western modernity. This perspective, in turn, has led to unwarranted dismissiveness toward church members’ self-reports of the empowerment they experience through their religious life. / text

Hospedado através do portal Arca Universal, o blog é um ambiente potencializador de novas formas de contato entre o mundo religioso e o mundo dos credos. Por meio das possibilidades interacionais da chamada web 2.0, permite aos fiéis internautas coparticiparem desta plataforma digital oferecendo a eles a oportunidade de manifestarem suas religiosidades em caráter multimídia. Nesse sentido, analisamos como o blog de Macedo reconfigura as práticas religiosas com seus fiéis no ambiente interacional da internet. A partir desta questão central, estuda-se o processo de interação estabelecido e os sentidos em circulação por meios das postagens e comentários. O estudo configura-se como uma pesquisa do tipo descritiva de cunho qualitativo em que a metodologia compreende consultas bibliográficas, observação e descrição do objeto empírico. A análise evidencia que o blog fomenta um sentimento de participação criando uma rede de reconhecimento, aproximação, visibilidade e legitimidade. / This research seeks to analyze the processes of interaction between church and faithful from the blog of Bishop Edir Macedo, leader of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD). Hosted by Arca Universal portal, the blog is an environment-enhancing new forms of contact between the religious world and the creeds world. Through the interaction possibilities of so-called Web 2.0, allows Internet users to the faithful co-participate in this digital platform offering them the opportunity to express their religiosity in multimedia character. Accordingly, we analyze how the blog of Macedo reconfigures religious practices with their faithful in the interactive environment of the Internet. From this central question, studies the interaction process and the meanings established in circulation by means of posts and comments. The study appears as a descriptive and qualitative research methodology that includes bibliographic, observation and description of the empirical object. The analysis shows that blog fosters a sense of ownership by creating a network of recognition, approach, visibility and legitimacy.
