Textual and editorial conflict in Pascal's PenséesDinning, William John January 2016 (has links)
The history of publication of Pascal's Pensées is one of conflict and contention at many levels. This is studied in relation to four editions which have emerged from engagement with the fragmented text, each marking a milestone in the evolution of editorial practice and mastery over the work of the dead author. The text is presented as target, bystander, and agent of conflict. The first two chapters deal with motivation to publish, target readership, and the sources of conflict themselves. Chapter three examines these issues with respect to the original edition (L'Édition de Port-Royal), and the subsequent three chapters examine respectively the editions of Prosper Faugère, Léon Brunschvicg, and Louis Lafuma. The narrative charts the gradual approach to the currently accepted presentation of the fragments, and the long persistence of efforts to imagine Pascal's plan for an apology for Christianity, against a reluctance to take account of the authority of existing documents. The reception of these editions provides clues to why the Pensées have an eternal youthfulness and a constant appeal to editors. I argue that the apology lies in the fragments, however they are arranged, that all editors have accepted their apologetic intent, and that their universal significance springs from the deep sensibility they express about the human condition.

Factors affecting the decision making of news editors in South AfricaGriffiths, Nikki 03 April 2011 (has links)
The aim of this exploratory study is to gain an understanding of the factors which influence the decision making of news editors in South Africa. The independent news media is an important source of information in modern society. It has a significant influence on people’s perceptions of the political and social issues facing a society. However it is not a neutral institution as it is a commercial business driven by profit. Within news organisations, editors are key decision makers as they decide how resources are allocated and which stories enter the public domain. The decisions taken by editors are immediately open to public scrutiny and often impact a range of stakeholders in society. In this study an exploratory phenomenological approach was used, as this approach seeks to capture the meaning of an experience through an examination of an individual’s lived experiences. To achieve this, twelve, in-depth interviews were conducted with editors, with over 85 years of editorial experience, in order to establish which factors influence their decision making process. The data was analysed using content and frequency analysis. The main factors which the editors identified as influencing their decision making process when evaluating a story included the following: the relevance to the audience, accuracy, the public interest, newsworthiness and entertainment value. In difficult editorial decisions which involved a trade-off between two or more important factors, the editors showed a strong commitment to the journalistic values of acting in the public interest and newsworthiness. Consultation, knowledge and personal attributes emerged as important competencies in ensuring good editorial decisions. Harmonic sinusoid modeling of tonal music eventsWen, Xue January 2007 (has links)
This thesis presents the theory, implementation and applications of the harmonic sinusoid modeling of pitched audio events. Harmonic sinusoid modeling is a parametric model that expresses an audio signal, or part of an audio signal, as the linear combination of concurrent slow-varying sinusoids, grouped together under harmonic frequency constraints. The harmonic sinusoid modeling is an extension of the sinusoid modeling, with the additional frequency constraints so that it is capable to directly model tonal sounds. This enables applications such as object-oriented audio manipulations, polyphonic transcription, instrument/singer recognition with background music, etc. The modeling system consists of an analyzer and a synthesizer. The analyzer extracts harmonic sinusoidal parameters from an audio waveform, while the synthesizer rebuilds an audio waveform from these parameters. Parameter estimation is based on a detecting-grouping-tracking framework. The detecting stage finds and estimates sinusoid atoms; the grouping stage collects concurrent atoms into harmonic groups; the tracking stage collects the atom groups at different time to form continuous harmonic sinusoid tracks. Compared to standard sinusoid model, the harmonic model focuses on harmonic groups of atoms rather than on isolated atoms, therefore naturally represents tonal sounds. The synthesizer rebuilds the audio signal by interpolating measured parameters along the found tracks. We propose the first application of the harmonic sinusoid model in digital audio editors. For audio editing, with the tonal events directly represented by a parametric model, we can implement standard audio editing functionalities on tonal events embedded in an audio signal, or invent new sound effects based on the model parameters themselves. Possibilities for other applications are suggested at the end of this thesis.
