_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Federal Government, by means of an inter-sectoral action, fomented the realization of the IX edition of the Native Peoples Games in 2007, with the purpose of promoting the reaffirmation of the cultural identity of the native ethnic groups in Brazil. Such cultural event arose from a demand of the nativeBrazilians, with the purpose of exchanging information about their social, economic, and cultural practices, and its main goal is to value all cultural manifestations of these groups. In this perspective, the present study has the following objectives: (a) to analyze the corporal practices presented in a competitive way at the IX the Native Peoples Games, comparing them to the principles and elements that characterize high performance sports; (b) to analyze in what extent this event achieved the proposed objectives; (c) to understand the meaning that the participants of this edition have attributed to sport and (d) how the Government fulfilled its attribution of assuring these peoples’ rights, focusing on their corporal practices as traditional manifestations of different native cultures. To do so, a complex research was carried out in distinct phases, composed of documentary, bibliographical and field researches, having participant observation and interviews as procedures. From that analysis, it was possible to understand that the structuring of the Native Peoples Games contributed to the development of a sportivization process of the corporal practices of those peoples, i.e. when an ordinary practice is turned over to a regular sport; and it was also possible to observe as probable consequences of such process: the re-significance of those corporal practices and the changes in those people’s behaviors, reinforcing the integration of the involved native peoples into the global society. From this point of view, the Native Peoples Games could be a source of controversy, once its objective is not to promote high performance sports, but it is possible to say that the traditional corporal practices start being structured by its logic. In this scope, the sport is an instrument which function is the interaction between distinct native communities and between those and the society, providing the exchange of traditional and modern values.
