Trust in Leadership| Investigation of Andragogical Learning and Implications for Student Placement Outcomes

Gillespie, LaVerne 13 June 2014 (has links)

Purpose. The investigation sought to determine the significance and or the effects of an ex post facto staffing intervention involving the addition of a Regional (mid-tier) team of instructional leaders as a viable and sustainable solution for increased operational effectiveness year over year, and, if there could be implications on employment outcomes. Furthermore, to determine whether this staffing intervention of adding a Regional (mid-tier) team of instructional leaders affected the primary Andragogical factors used for instructional effectiveness and did the change create a conducive condition for learning for Career Services Leaders from the perspective of Andragogy.

Design/Methodology/Approach. Mixed-method research utilizing the Modified Instructional Perspectives Inventory (MIPI) originally designed by Henschke (1989), modified appropriately. This study will compare the gap between the Regional Director (RD) and the Director (D) scores on the MIPI to measure possible contributions to employment placement outcomes and determine primary Andragogical factors used for instructional effectiveness for Career Services Leaders.

Findings. Regarding the influence of Andragogy on placement outcomes for 2011 compared to 2012, the conclusions were as follows: There was no significant relationship of note, however, observably, the wider the gap, the lower the placement rate for 2011. However, the 2012 Employment Rate (ER) indicated that there was a moderate, negative relationship between the gap in Andragogical instructional perspectives and employment rates. The leader learners were operationally effective as a result of the instruction they received from the instructional leaders. The research results support this point, since 2012 employment rates related to the Andragogical gap indicating trust, and both 2011 and 2012 employment rates were dependent upon the region from which they were generated.

Practical Implications. In higher education for-profit environments involving leadership development, instructional leadership staffing paradigms form the rationale for increased performance and operational effectiveness.

Originality/Value. The results of this study provided empirical validation for the decision to restructure the Career Services leadership model for continued implementation and sustainability in higher education leadership settings.

Keywords. Andragogy, Leadership, Career Services, Instructional Leadership, Adult Learning, Trust in Leadership, Regional Directors, Middle Management.

The Influence of Social Media Technology on Generation iY's Ability to Communicate Face to Face in Their Academic Careers

Henry, James H. 05 February 2015 (has links)

This thesis investigates how Generation iY students perceive that social media and / or texting technology has influenced their ability to track and comprehend the subtleties of face-to-face communication within an academic setting. Generation iY is defined as those born between the years 1982 to 2004. Also involved in this study are members of the faculty and staff that teach Generation iY. The theories being applied and examined in this study include, Postman's Technology Ecology, McLuhan's Media Ecology, and Ong's Orality and Literacy. These theories while addressing different aspects of technological change, all agree that the change is all encompassing with every advancement in technology. The study consisted of four focus groups. Two groups consist of Generation iY, and two groups of faculty and staff. Comparative analysis was utilized to point out the similarities and differences between the focus groups. This study has revealed that while Generation iY said that they prefer face to face communication; they are intimidated, fearful of judgment, overwhelmed, and lack the sense of responsibility that is inherent with face-to-face communication. They find social media and texting a more comfortable means of communication because it requires less effort and minimizes consequences. The quotes given by the Generation iYers in this study are in accord with what Elmore (2010), writes about them, Generation iY is isolated yet connected. Generation iY has an overdeveloped attachment to their peer group via social media. The faculty of Generation iY cites this as a major reason why Generation iY struggle with critical thinking. Weiler (2004), supports these concerns as she indicates that they gather information for the wrong reasons. They use critical thinking in order to prove their beliefs right to their peer group instead of trying to find answers to problems.

Blended Learning in Higher Education| Comparison of Faculty and Student Attitudes Regarding Course Effectiveness

LaVergne, Debra Kaye 05 February 2015 (has links)

A successful blended classroom includes the important essentials of both traditional and online education; creating a new approach to instructional learning. With the steadily increasing number of blended classes offered at community colleges, an opportunity exists to inform the purposeful planning of blended classes to best meet students' needs through identifying and comparing both faculty and students' perceived course effectiveness factors and challenges. The specific problem is that faculty and students' perceived factors for possible increased course effectiveness and their perceived challenges for decreased course effectiveness have not been previously identified then compared and contrasted. Filling the gap with this specific perception knowledge allows educators to more purposefully and strategically plan curriculum, thus increase student success. The purpose of this quantitative methodology research study was to examine perceived attitudes of blended learning faculty and students. Secondarily, best practices were identified for developing blended courses that promote quality higher education instruction and learner success as perceived by both the students and the faculty at a large community college in the Southwestern United States. Two web surveys were administered, one for faculty and one for students to gather data through quantitative and open-ended questions. For this purposeful sample study, the participants were 31 faculty members who taught blended classes and 171 students over the age of 18 who attended blended classes at the specific college during the Spring 2014 and Fall 2014 semesters. The quantitative data obtained from each of the surveys was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. Sixteen t test independent two-sample assuming unequal variances found the results were split depending on the course effectiveness factor being addressed. The null hypothesis was rejected for six of the twelve benefit factors (flexibility, time management, instructor access, interactive learning materials, optimized class time, and success measured by withdrawal rates) and one of the four challenge factors (reduced access to instructor). Themes that emerged from the open-ended responses included the focus on flexibility, technology, self-efficacy, and communication. Many of the factors identified, if addressed, could increase the course effectiveness, satisfaction, retention and completion, and ultimately, successful student learning in the blended class modality.

Svoboda jako cíl výchovy / Freedom as a goal of education

BEČKOVÁ, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the issue of freedom as a goal of education and is divided into two basic parts the theoretical part and the empirical part. In its first chapter, the theoretical part notes on the philosophical reflection of the phenomenon of freedom, chapter two approaches the philosophical foundations of education for freedom, where not only a philosophy of education, but also freedom in the context of responsibility are presented. Chapter three discusses the phenomenon of freedom in the context of pedagogy of leisure. The last as well as the most extensive chapter of the theoretical part is focused on freedom as a goal of education, not only education in the family, at school, but also being part of teaching ethics and teaching in institutions of leisure time. The essence of the empirical part is the questionnaire survey where parents, teachers and educators in institutions of leisure time are being interviewed concerning their experience with education of children and adolescents for freedom and for responsibility. The empirical part is also supplemented with case studies. Based on the questionnaire survey and case study evaluations, recommendations and own suggestions are being introduced.

Abstract: This research is part of the High Education Pedagogy and it focuses on the assessment process of learning used by university professors who chose the Portfolio as a mediator resource of the student's learning. It explains how these actors elect such resource and how they understand and evaluate the pupils' course of learning. The inseparability of the act of teaching, learning and assessment is taken as reference for the understanding of these choices. In order to understand this reality we look for support in the qualitative approach and the resources used for the collection of data were semi-structured interviews with professors who teach in different graduating courses at several higher education institutions. These professionals are sensitive to the paradigm change in the field of higher education and they try to implement the Portfolio in their practice. The document analysis of teaching plans and students' Portfolios assigned by the participants complement the collection of empirical data and the dialogue with those who study the higher education pedagogy about the perception of the powers and the limits of this assessment resource provides the closeness between theory and practice. The set of records that were done and the facing of the collated data provided a general perception of the experienced learning process, revealing how the assessment process was built, the strategies that were used for teaching and learning through the Portfolio, the contradictions in the implementation and the professors' inclination to draw from the process the contributions of reflective nature. The obtained data take us to a wide inquiry about the innovations in the assessment of higher education learning that is not finished with the proposition of new instruments or in proceeding forms of the students' progress records. The contribution of the Portfolio is recognized in the promotion of new relational processes between professor and students as interactive and learning beings that constitute themselves culturally in educational spaces by means of reciprocal actions where the reflection is the keynote that looks for a qualified and emancipatory training. Overcoming efforts are revealed, developed by professors who look for new paths to educational challenges seeking new ways of being and teaching in different fields of knowledge, not always followed by specific conditions that favor the innovative experience. Finally the data analysis confirms that the learning and assessment processes affect each other and innovations in one of them favor the shift of the other. In order to achieve such result the higher education professors' training should discuss the assessment in a wide range and it must be related to the educational practice, avoiding instrumental solutions to problems of great complexity. / Doutorado / Ensino e Práticas Culturais / Doutor em Educação

A prática docente do professor de física no terceiro grau. / Teaching practice by physics professors and researchers

Aguida Celina de Meo Barreiro 13 September 1996 (has links)
The present work aims to understand the teaching practice at graduate level used by Physics teacher-researchers. It is a Case Study on four teachers who carry out activities in teacher education and in bachelorship at the Physics Institute of São Carlos - USP. The choice of teachers was based in the evidence that their actuation also denotes preoccupation with the teaching practice in a professional environment which is characterised by the national and international projections in research on Theoretical and Experimental Physics. The qualitative approach in educational research was used. Two interviews were effectuated with each one of the four teachers and observation of their lessons throughout the second semester of 1994 was carried out. The data analysis was carried out from nine categories that were created for this purpose and which embody the main aspects found in the classroom. The conclusions aim to offer subsidies for future applications concerning the continued education of Physics teachers and teachers from proximal fields. The reflective practice and awareness directed to the learning and teaching processes are emphasised.

The value of art-oriented pedagogical approaches to the teaching of optics and photonics

Pompea, Stephen M., Regens, Nancy L. 16 August 2017 (has links)
Art-oriented pedagogical approaches have been successfully applied to optics and photonics education. We will describe how art-based programs that incorporate a Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) approach can be used by optics and photonics educators. VTS encourages both a deep appreciation of the content of optics images and phenomena and a highly participatory approach to understanding them. This type of approach has been used by the authors in a variety of educational settings including teacher professional development workshops, museum and science center-based programs, after school programs and in two-week intensive summer academies for students. These approaches work well with multiple age groups including primary and secondary grade students, university students, and adults who may have little apparent connection to optics and photonics. This art-science hybrid approach can be used by university professors, optics/ photonics professionals who do public programs, museum educators, and classroom science teachers.

On the integration of Building Information Modelling in undergraduate civil engineering programmes in the United Kingdom

Bataw, Anas January 2016 (has links)
The management of data, information and knowledge through the project life cycle of buildings and civil infrastructure projects is becoming increasingly complex. In an attempt to drive efficiencies and address this complexity, the United Kingdom (UK) Government has mandated that Building Information Modelling (BIM) methods must be adopted in all public sector construction projects from 2016. Emerging from the US Department of Defence, BIM is an approach to the co-ordination of design and production data using object-oriented principles as described in ISO 29481-1:2010. The underlying philosophy of BIM is to ensure the “provision of a single environment to store shared asset data and information, accessible to all individuals who are required to produce, use and maintain it” (PAS 1192-2:2013). A key aspect of BIM lies in the notion of ‘interoperability’ between various software applications used in the design and construction process and a common data format for the efficient exchange of design information and knowledge. Protagonists of BIM argue that this interoperability provides an effective environment for collaboration between actors in the construction process and creates accurate, reliable, repeatable and high-quality information exchange. This UK Government mandate presents numerous challenges to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) professions; in particular, the characteristics of BIM Level 2 remain explicitly undefined and this has created a degree of uncertainty amongst the promoters and those professionals charged with delivering projects. This uncertainty is further reflected in UK higher education; contemporary undergraduate programmes in civil engineering across the UK are, on the whole, at the bottom of the BIM ‘maturity curve’. UK higher education institutions are increasingly being challenged to embrace BIM through appropriate pedagogies and teaching practices but the supporting guidance is emergent and variable. In the case of civil engineering programmes in the UK, the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) has issued a ‘good practice guide’ as have the Higher Education Academy (HEA) under the auspices of the ‘BIM Academic Forum’. Nevertheless, a clear demand for further research to explore the technical and pedagogical issues associated with BIM integration into degree programmes remains. The research described in this thesis casts a critical lens on the current literature in the domains of object-oriented modelling of infrastructure and the associated implications for procurement and project management. A mixed-methods approach using questionnaire analysis, focus groups and secondary case study analysis was used to enact an inductive research approach that captures a range of data on pedagogic issues and considerations associated with the integration of BIM into the design of a new civil engineering curricular. The findings include recommendations for the ‘up-skilling’ of university teachers and academics, enhancing student employability and the development of suitable learning and learning techniques. A framework for the incorporation of BIM principles, concepts and technologies into civil engineering programmes is proposed. The findings of the research suggest that the first two years of study in a typical, accredited civil engineering degree programme should focus on the technical concepts relating to design from a modelling and analysis perspective. The latter years of the degree should focus on the development of ‘soft-skills’ required to enable effective teamwork and collaboration within a multidisciplinary project environment. Further studies should seek to test the proposed framework in a ‘live’ environment, particularly in the context of the necessity to balance the demands of summative and formative assessment regimes.

Under the title School Family Agricultural of Orizona-Goiás: history and memories of a Field Education experience. Elaborated from contributions: theoretical; Documentaries; Oral; visits; Meetings with the President of the Rural Social Center of Orizona at the time of the creation of EFAORI and with the current one. Built under various apprehensions of the Sociology of Culture, Cultural History, Pedagogy of Alternation and Education of the Field, with an option in dialectical materialism. Its relevance, thematic / research object, allowed to widen the research horizon about Field Education and Alternation Pedagogy in Brazil; Seize records to understand the trajectory, ruptures, steps and senses of EFAORI's history. The agrarian question in Brazil is permeated by a process of concentration of land since the arrival of the European. The military dictatorship undertook a dynamic and understanding of the development of the countryside by subjugating to the dominion of capital and the city. The struggle for land comes together with the conquest of education in the countryside and with the support of the Pastoral Land Commission and the Landless Rural Workers Movement. The Alternacy Pedagogy, the Arizona Agricultural Family School, is an effective proposal for rural education. EFAORI was inserted in the political struggle of the hegemonic struggle marked by the abandonment of the "tutelage of the Catholic Church", a resizing of family farming and developed social work. Explanatory elements that differentiate the concept of rural school and rural school were also revealed. School-family-community integration, integrated theory-practice curriculum, student evaluation as a formative process, political commitment to sustainable family agriculture, and substantive references in EFAORI's memories were also highlighted. It has been hypothesized that EFAORI-Goiás is a successful experience of Field Education in Alternation Pedagogy, which has historically guaranteed youngsters, primarily in the field, the High School / Vocational Technician in Agriculture committed to family farming.
