Research has been conducted in the genesis and development of formal education in the Eastern Moutse area within the context of formal education in South African schools. Various methods such as historical method, phenomenological method, metabletic method, comparative method, exemplaristic method, descriptive method
and evaluation method have been followed whereby the development, over the years, of education in the area under review, was revealed. The authenticity of formal education as it evolved was evaluated by the use of Essence Structure Model (ESM). An attempt has been made to describe the education-essence-structure in its multifaceted complexity. These education-aim-essences have been used since time immemorial. It appeared that of all the essences, religiousness has the highest value. Other essences which are of equal status are: the ethical, the aesthetic, the economic, language and other essences of the ESM. In order for authentic education to take place, all the education aim structure essences must be accorded a rightful place in the education of a child towards adulthood. Throughout history, cultural groups have over and under-emphasised different essences in their efforts to educate the child towards adulthood. This effort was informed by a particular life-view or a philosophy oflife which was upheld by people of different cultural backgrounds. The need to restructure the curriculum in the Eastern Moutse area in such a way that it caters for a balanced recognition of all essences of the ESM has been discussed. Overemphasis of some essences at the expense of the others leads to an inauthentic

Education has become expensive and does not make provision for distinctive education for individual groups in the community. Privatisation of education is increasingly regarded as a possible way of solving problems in education. Privatisation originates in the economic concept of the free market, and it stresses responsibility and freedom of choice. Although privatisation has an economic motive, it also has other motives, including a political one. Privatisation assumes many forms and has specific aims, as well as
advantages and disadvantages. The handling of the provision of
capital of the services in South Africa is proof that certain functions of the state can be very successfully privatised. Other tasks in education have also been privatised and these tasks have many advantages, especially for the individual and for groups in the community. Privatisation of education culminates in the private school. Existing
private schools claim, among others, that they promote independence
and quality education. It is, however, very difficult to prove, unequivocally, the claims of private schools. Although
private schools are accused of elitism and divisiveness, public
schools also strive for an own ethos. Privatisation of education offers the state, the community and the private sector exciting possibilities
of education and challenges. It should ensure the sovereignty of education and once again place the responsibility for education on the parents and the community. Privatisation of education should, however, always put the interests of the child first. Daarom is dit dadelik opvallend wanneer ons 'n Goewaneur kry wat ook vir die geestelike belange van die bevolking 'n ope oog gehad het.
So 'n Goeweneur was Sir George Grey, 'n man wat besonder bevoeg was en wat in alle rigtings baie vir Suid-Afrika gedoen het.

Thesis (MTech(Management))-- Cape Technikon, 2002 / Outcomes-based Education was introduced to the South African education system in
1996 with the implementation of Curriculum 2005. The first post-apartheid Minister of
Education, Professor Sibusiso Bhengu, set himself the task of radically reforming the
education system and of eliminating everything which had emanated from the apartheid
regime. This work has been continued by the present Minister of Education, Mc Kadar
Asmal.
The reformation of the education system and the implementation of Curriculum 2005 by
the government was based on the advice of international experts. This advice was
garnered at a premium in costs, but there is a general view that South African
circumstances were not always taken into consideration. In many instances there is a
feeling that Curriculum 2005 was forced upon the educators.
This study focuses on education in South Africa, past and present, as well as the
perceptions of Curriculum 2005 by educators, and whether educators are really motivated
by it. This study also focuses on certain problematic areas in Curriculum 2005 and
suggests possible solutions.

The future of the past in South African schools : curriculum development, school leaving examinations and syllabus design and assessment in history : a comparative studyGunn, Alan Howard January 1990 (has links)
This is a two-part study dealing with the curriculum, school leaving examinations and History as a school subject in England and South Africa. Part One is a developmental study. Developments in the curriculum of both countries since the Second World War are traced. In England this period is characterised by a shift from a somewhat laissez faire approach of the authorities at Whitehall to the curriculum of individual schools to the prescription that seems inherent in the National Curriculum. The outstanding development in South Africa during this period has been the introduction of a system of differentiated education. In contrast to minor developments in the South African school leaving examination system, England has witnessed the consolidation of the two-tier GCE and CSE system into a single examination at 16+, the GCSE. In discussing developments in History as a school subject, one is struck by the growth of the "new history" in England (this is described in some detail) against the relative lack of development (at "official" syllabus level) in South Africa where the subject remains rooted in the "traditional", chronological, content-based approach. Part Two of this study compares the current situation in England and South Africa at both the macro (ie. curriculum and school leaving examination systems) and micro (ie. History as a subject in the curriculum) levels. At the macro level the curriculum and school leaving examination systems in both England and South Africa are contrasted and one notes an increasing trend towards centralization in both countries. At the micro level use is made of "official" syllabuses and examination papers to contrast the "new history" approach in England with the "traditional" approach in South Africa. In the conclusion two broad possibilities for curriculum reform in South Africa are considered: Broad reform across the curriculum on the one hand and reforms in History on the other

Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Arts, 1989. / This dissertation explores the establishment of reformatories and industrial
schools in South Africa between 1882 and 1939. It focuses on the political and
economic context of their emergence; the social and ideological construction of
delinquency and the child in need of care; the relationship of the class, colour
and gender divisions in the reformatory and industrial school system to the wider
racial and sexual division of labour in a colonial order, and the implications and
significance of the transfer of these institutions from the Department of Prisons to
the Department of Education in 1917 and 1934 respectively
Thematically, the study is divided into three parts. Part One composing
chapters one. two. three, four, five and six situates the reformatory and industrial
school in their political and economic, social and ideological context. Beginning
with the origins of the reformatory in the nineteenth century Cape Colony it then
shifts focus to the Witwatersrand where the industrial revolution re-shaped and
brought into being new social forces and institutions to deal with children defined
as delinquent or in need of care. It also examines the place of the reformatory
and industrial school in relation to the wider system of legal sanctions and
welfare methods established during this period for the white and black working
classes by a segregationist state.
Part Two comprising chapters seven, eight, nine and ten contrasts and
compares social practices in the institutions in terms of class, colour and gender
between 1911 and 1934. Included here is a consideration of the different
methods of discipline and control, conditions, education and training, and
system of apprenticeship provided for black and white, male and female inmates
Responses of inmates to institutionalisation are explored in the final chapter of
this section.
The third section comprises chapters eleven (a) and (b) and chapter twelve
These chapters expand on themes developed in earlier sections for the period
1934-1939. Shifts in criminological thinking and changing strategies towards
juvenile delinquency in the nineteen thirties are considered in chapters eleven a)
and b). The final chapter examines the nature and significance of the changes
brought about particularly by Alan Paton in the African reformatory, Diepkloof,
between 1934 and 1939
The conclusion provides an overview of the main arguments of each section.
