Orth, Miguel Alfredo January 2003 (has links)
This work analyses the theoretical and methodological conceptions that seem to characterize Education Information Technology teachers' training in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. In order to study this topic it was considered the training and research practices that are developed by coordinators, teachers, students and educational multipliers of the Laboratory of Cognitive Studies of the Psychology Institute of UFRGS and of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). We also intended to better know the theoretical and practical conceptions that have characterized the courses of Education Information Technology training at GIE/FACIN (PUCRS) and LEC/PSICO (UFRGS) since the nineties. Besides that, we payed attention to teachers, students and multipliers conceptions and practices Conscious of the specific reality that involves the actors' theoretical and practical conceptions, as well as of the legal, historical and lively antecedents of the area, country and of the world related to Education Information Technology training, we try to clarify the actors' theoretical and methodological point of view involved in the process of training in the area. On the other hand, we sought to clarify the contradictions that emerge in the courses of Education Information Technology training that are organized by many institutions. In the final recommendations we try to interpret the data picked up in the different moments of our research in order to elaborate some suggestions or recommendations that have two particular aims. On one side, we intend to minimize the distance between theory and practice. Nowadays this abyss or rupture permeates the teachers' Education Information Technology training and the educational practices aided by the modem technological resources ofthe information and communication. On the other hand, we try to point some Habermas' categories that could serve as subsidy to those groups in the organization and development of courses directed to teachers initial and continuous training in Education Information Technology in a society which has been constantly influenced by the information and communication. We made this consideration for we understand that Language PhjJosophy can represent a very important theoretical and methodological tool in order to better understand the challenges that are proposed by a society and a world which are greatly influenced by the information and communication global effects.

Understanding Quadratic Functions Using Real World Problems and IT

Karim, Nakhshin A. 02 May 2012 (has links)
The concept of function is crucial to a great extent in modern mathematics and is considered a major barrier to many mathematics students. Students have difficulty interpreting information related to functions in general, and quadratic functions in particular. Quadratic Function is one of the topics which are covered in a course which is compulsory for a large number of students in the General Education Program of Zayed University. This program leads to different majors, including Mathematics Education, Business, Information Technology, and other majors. The challenge in teaching Quadratic Function in a course like this is mostly based on the fact that many students think that Quadratic Function is a difficult topic to understand and learn, and some teachers would agree with them that it is difficult to teach. In this paper, I demonstrate real world problems aimed to improve the students understanding of Quadratic Functions; life problems on this topic support developing student’s knowledge, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and analytical skills. This paper also includes examples of the techniques used with graphing of quadratic function, the algebra, and inverses of the same function. International move to improve mathematics curriculum have supported new goals for student’s learning which highlights problem solving skills, reasoning, ability to work in groups and individually, and use of technology. Knowing that information technology plays considerable role in achieving the above goals, teaching students the concept of Quadratic Functions can be smoothly achieved by using Information Technology in solving real world problems.

Advantages and disadvantages of eLearning in primary and secondary schools in the context of developing countries

Temitope, Obafemi Samson January 2015 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Masters of Technology: Information Technology, Durban University of Technology. Durban. South Africa, 2015. / Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are ubiquitous nowadays, and there are many situations where they are overall perceived either as advantageous or as disadvantageous; but there are other situations where it is unknown whether they are overall advantageous or disadvantageous. For example, ICTs are perceived as advantageous for communication, but texting during driving is perceived as worse than drinking while driving. Concerning for example eLearning which is the use of ICTs in education, the fact that it has not yet eliminated the problem of poor academic performance raises the question as to whether ICTs are advantageous or not in education especially when one considers their high cost. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of educators on the advantages and disadvantages of eLearning. This aim will be subdivided into three types of research objectives: (a) to select from existing literature suitable theories that can be applied to the examination of educators’ perceptions on the advantages and disadvantages of eLearning; (b) to design a model of the factors affecting educators’ perceptions on the advantages and disadvantages of eLearning; (c) to empirically test the above announced model; (d) to propose recommendations on how to optimize the impact of eLearning. Objectives a, b, and d were accomplished through the review of existing appropriate literature on teaching and learning, and on eLearning; but objective c was met through a survey of 65 educators of Camperdown town schools in the Pinetown district of KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The outcomes of these four objectives are as follows: (a) Constructivism, Progressivism, and Self-regulated learning can be used as suitable theories applicable to the examination of educators perceptions on the advantages and disadvantages of eLearning; (b) It makes sense to hypothesize that educators perceptions on the advantages and disadvantages of eLearning are affected by their demographics and by their adherence to learning theories; (c) Empirical test conducted by this study confirm that educators perceptions on the advantages and disadvantages of eLearning are affected by their adherence to constructivism and to progressivism; (d) It can be concluded that the impact of the use of ICTs on teaching and learning will be optimized through the deployment of constructivist and progressivist educators as champions of eLearning projects in schools.

Examining the perceived reliability of cost effective e-learning handsets for teaching and learning in schools

Sofowora, Mayowa A. January 2015 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology: Information Technology, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2015. / The use of mobile devices such as cell phones, smartphones, personal digital assistants and tablet computers is becoming prevalent in today’s world; and it is facilitating access to a vast amount of data, services and applications for the improvement of people’s lives. Advances in electronics and manufacturing technologies usually lead to the rapid release of newer and sleeker models with new features and capabilities. These newer models therefore render older models obsolete, and this pushes people to frequently replace their devices. The drawback of such frequent replacements is that a large number of devices are disposed and they end up as e-waste. The fact that e-waste constitutes a major hazard to human health and to the environment is the motivation behind this study whose aim is to examine the factors affecting the perceptions of teachers on the durability of cell phones in the e-learning context. This research aims was achieved through the content analysis of existing literature and through a survey of 67 secondary school teachers from the iLembe and UMgungundlovu district municipalities in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The attribution theory was selected as the theoretical framework for this study, and it led to the identification of four independent variables (Demographics, Intention, Knowledge, and Actual use) and of one dependent variable (Perceived Durability). The results of this study indicate that teaching experience and school location are the only two demographics that affect other variables from this research: School location affects cell phone durability, and teaching experience affects cell phone usage intentions. These results also indicate that all the variables of this research are linked except for the relationship between knowledge and perceived durability. One of the recommendations of this study is the proposal of a three year cycle for cell phone renewals in schools mobile learning projects in order to manage e-waste through e-recycling, and this recommendation is based on the finding of this research that teachers believe that cell phones generally lasts between two to three years. The main contribution of this study is to have examined the durability of mobile phones in the e-learning context and this is something new compared to all the studies reviewed by this research.

The management challenges of using information communication technology for administration at secondary schools in Kirinyaga County, Kenya

Njoka, Muriithi Stephen 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis sought to address the management challenges of using ICT in advancing secondary school administration in Kirinyaga County, Kenya. Despite the Kenyan government taking an initiative towards transforming her education sector to be ICT compliant, much emphasis has been laid on the pedagogical aspect at the expense of managerial and administrative functions. This study sought to investigate the underlying challenges in the use of ICT in secondary school administration. A mixed mode method was used in which both qualitative and quantitative approaches were applied. The target population comprised 18 principals and 54 teachers; inclusive of two heads of departments and one computer teacher in each school. Sampling was done using the purposive technique. Structured and semi-structured questionnaires, administrative documents and face-to-face interviews were used. The principals responded to questionnaire one whereas the HoDs and ICT teachers responded to questionnaire two and three respectively. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The findings from the literature review and the empirical study attest that; a) The government in its ICT policy formulation has not adequately defined the roles and responsibilities of various key actors in education for tangible integration. b) A relatively high number of principals (41.2%) and HoDs (36.1%) had only undergone ICT training at informal levels despite their attendance to ICT integration courses in school administration. c) ICT integration in school administration saved time for easy monitoring and evaluation of the school programmes. The conclusion was that vivid ICT policy framework, school administrators and teachers’ ICT training play a crucial role in the integration of ICT in schools’ administrative functions. / Educational Leadership and Management / D.
