Women's acquisition of literacy skills and health knowledge in Nepal: A comparative study of nonformal education approaches

Smith, Cristine A 01 January 1997 (has links)
The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the extent of difference in effectiveness of three non-formal education approaches in helping women acquire literacy skills and/or health knowledge in Nepal, and to propose hypotheses about factors or "influences" that might explain these differences. This exploratory study provides insights that program planners, researchers and policy makers can use for focusing further research on which non-formal education program designs for women will bring about the greatest increase in literacy skills and health knowledge. Four sample groups of women were compared: (1) 74 women in three different sites who attended monthly Mothers' Group health education meetings (with no literacy instruction); (2) 38 women in two different classes who completed a 6-month basic literacy course (with no health instruction); (3) 65 women in three different classes who completed a 6-month health/literacy course and 38 of these women who completed a 3-month post-literacy/health course; and (4) 50 women in two different sites who attended neither literacy course nor Mother's Group meetings. Data related to "acquisition" included literacy test scores and health knowledge oral interview scores; data related to possible "influences" included demographic data, and information about community and classroom context. Data were coded and analyzed by standard statistical procedures. The findings indicate that non-formal education of any kind is effective in helping women acquire some degree of both literacy skills and health knowledge. Type of non-formal education approach was not significantly related to greater literacy skills acquisition but it was related to greater health knowledge acquisition. Participation in the integrated health/literacy course was related to higher levels of health knowledge than was participation in health only or literacy only non-formal education approaches. Participation in the post-literacy course was associated with greater literacy skill and health knowledge acquisition than participation in either schooling or other types of non-formal education at a basic level. In addition, literacy skill acquisition appeared to be influenced by class or community factors (hours of instruction, facilitator characteristics, economic status of the community) and health knowledge acquisition was influenced by individual factors (marital status, age, radio ownership, number of children).

LETRAMENTO DIGITAL E PERFIL DISCENTE: EXISTE UMA RELAÇÃO?

Almeida, Luiz Henrique Touguinha de 10 September 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-22T17:26:28Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 touguiha.pdf: 836717 bytes, checksum: a963247313214aad571bd3dc15bbd78b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-09-10 / This study investigates the influence of information and communication technology on the current constitution of subjectivities, in an academic context. It started from the finding that freshmen students, in undergraduate distant courses, encounter difficulties in their academic performances on account of technology management, whose domain is required for the contemporary social activities, which justifies it. To this end, two moments were selected for the dissertation: field documentary and empirical research. Thus, this dissertation is a result of a hypertextual reading and writing, though most often physical, at the moment that several sources were consulted and, not infrequently, referring to one another. Similarly the writing, which was added up to the ideas taken from various texts, reflected new understandings and knowledge construction. This kind of focal reading searches specifically relevant concepts in the object of study in investigations, which ultimately lead to new titles and authors. This feature ends up producing a very impressive list of references, both in terms of quantity and quality, the full description of which is not suitable for abstracts, but is duly recorded at the end, according to the rules of academic style. Chapter 1, the theoretical background, extends from section 1.1 and its subsection and deals with societies, technologies and fundamental elements of culture, with a focus on education. Section 1.2 deals with identity and social relations and is subdivided into three subsections, which deal with issues of language as a basis in the constitution of identities and the influence of social relations on this constitution, and social relationships and technologies in everyday life. Section 1.3 shows that the WWW as a new dimension of access to the world while section 1.4 describe the actors in this new scenario, the digital natives and digital immigrants. Item 1.5 is concerned with digital inclusion and exclusion and 1.6, and its subdivision, brings the question of alphabetical literacy and digital literacy. Subjectivities and literacies are the topics dealt with in section 1.7, which closes the theoretical chapter, in which scholars such as Bakhtin, Deleuze, Foucault, Guattari, Heidegger, Levy, Rheingold, Votre, Vygotsky and Warschauer stand out. The empirical field research adopted a methodology that focused on subjects observation studied in situations of academic context and subsequent interview. It was conducted in the first half of 2010 and had as subjects studied, two students, a freshman and a veteran from a Pedagogy university course, in the distance mode, regularly enrolled in the face-to-face unit of the support pole Unopar ─ University of Northern Parana, Rio Grande -RS, plus a tutor room and a former student, now graduated, whose idea of inclusion in the group occurred during the research process. As a result of this study, it was concluded that the acquisition of literacy, such as the acquisition of alphabetic literacy, exercises a strong influence on modes of subjectivity. This acquisition is reflected in modes of subjectivity that interfere directly on the constitution of subjectivity, whether as students or professionals / Este estudo investiga a influência das tecnologias da informação e comunicação atuais na constituição de subjetividades, num contexto acadêmico.

Catechesi e alfabetizzazione a Brescia in età moderna / Catechesis and Literacy in Brescia in the Modern Age

GAMBA, GIOVANNA 27 March 2007 (has links)
The importance of catechism as a factor that helped literacy in the modern age has been underlined by historiography for a long time: the schools of Christian doctrine, founded and revitalized after the Council of Trent, represented actually a privileged occasion, often the only one, for many children to approach the world of letters. Although society was still pervaded with orality, the advantages of literacy became more and more evident and fuelled a need of education from the lower classes that started quietly but that soon increased. It was a composite and fragmentary demand, often uncertain, definitely mobile that met a similarly varied offer. This was how the first schools of rudiments originated. They were usually entrusted to clergymen who taught gratis et amore Dei, although the real turning point came about when the common sensibility reached such a level that teaching was formalized: means were found to pay the teachers and to establish permanent, public and free schools. This research work analyses the schools of doctrine and the schools of rudiments in the diocese of Brescia, covering the time span between two especially incisive milestones: from one side the religious split in Europe, with the subsequent Council of Trent trying to heal the wounds and promote a new Christianity; to the other side the revolutionary upheavals at the end of the eighteenth century, that caused the age-long structures of the ancien régime to break down.

Web-based new literacies and EFL curriculum design in teacher education : a design study for expanding EFL student teachers' language-related literacy practices in an Egyptian pre-service teacher education programme

Abdallah, Mahmoud Mohammad Sayed January 2011 (has links)
With the dominance of the Web in education and English language learning, new literacies have emerged. This thesis is motivated by the assumption that these literacies need to be integrated into the Egyptian pre-service EFL teacher education programmes so that EFL student teachers can cope with the new reality of language teaching/learning. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to develop a theoretical understanding of the relationship between Web-based new literacies and the teaching of TESOL in a way that supports the possibility of expanding Egyptian pre-service EFL student teachers’ language-related literacy practices by integrating some Web-based new literacies into their education programme, with specific reference to the context of Assiut University College of Education (AUCOE). This requires accomplishing minor objectives represented in: (1) identifying the range of those Web-based new literacies that Egyptian EFL student teachers need in this ICT-dominated age; (2) identifying those Web-based facilities beneficial to them, and why and how they can be beneficial; and (3) generating framework for EFL curriculum design based on both literature and empirical data. To accomplish this, a design-based research (DBR) methodology drawing on a pragmatic epistemology is developed and employed as the main research paradigm informing this design study. Thus, the research design involves a flexible three-stage research framework: (1) the preliminary phase, which acts as a theoretical and empirical foundation for the whole study, and informs a preliminary design framework; it involves reviewing relevant literature and obtaining empirical data through documentary analysis (100 documents), online questionnaire (n=50), and semi-structured interviews (n=19); (2) the prototyping phase that involves two iterations (36 participants in the first iteration, and 30 in the second) conducted in the Egyptian context to test the proposed design framework. Each iteration acts as a micro-cycle of the whole design study, and thus involves its own objectives, learning design, research methodology and procedures (in line with the main DBR methodology), and results; (3) the assessment/reflective phase which, based on the prototyping phase results, presents a final design framework for expanding EFL student teachers’ language-related literacy practices. This has implications for the EFL curriculum design process within the Egyptian context in general, and AUCOE in particular. Results indicate that throughout the two iterations, it has become evident that the process of expanding EFL student teachers’ language-related literacy practices by integrating some Web-based new literacies into the AUCOE pre-service programme is quite feasible once some design principles are considered. Some significant conclusions and educational implications are provided, along with some main contributions to knowledge in TESOL/TEFL, language-learning theory, research methodology, and educational practice as far as the Egyptian context of pre-service EFL teacher education is concerned.

It is a case built through the review of the literature related to the theme; by the analysis of documents (books, newspapers, texts, theses and dissertations, literature, poetry, songs, letters, interviews etc.), that recover stories of life and actions of those who built the MEB-Goiás, pursuing to capture theoretical and philosophicalpolitical benchmarks which influenced and argued its political-educational practice. The datas were analyzed based on readings of works from authors like Amado, Bosi, Brandão, Chardin, Fávero, Freire, Kadt, Lima e Arantes, Mounier, Peixoto Filho, Pessoa, Queiroz, Thompson, Vaz, and others. The analysis of the MEB-Goiás, in 1961 the 1966, indicated that the political and educational practice historically situated and therefore with the peasants, was a result of a possible construction, because of the confluence of a number of factors, like: the historic moment; the histories of life, commitment and militancy of Team Central and monitors the movement, supporting popular adults literacy/education articulated to the aims and needs of workers from rural areas; the dialogue with the theoretical reference from MEB-Nacional, from national and international authors in Church, social movements and popular education; the option, from the end of 1962, for a critical and transforming education.
