Chan, Theodore, Wang, Winni January 2009 (has links)
Class of 2009 Abstract / OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an educational booklet written in Chinese designed for Chinese-Americans with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Healthcare professionals who work with Chinese-American patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and proficiency in writing Chinese developed an educational booklet on Type 2 diabetes. An expert panel of Chinese American pharmacists and dietitians evaluated the booklet by rating language appropriateness, ease of reading, ease of locating information, overall presentation of the booklet, and usefulness of the booklet in a practice setting. Topics of the booklet were assessed for accuracy, relevance, and irrelevance. RESULTS: Questionnaires were completed by 8 healthcare professionals. In the expert panel, there were five pharmacists and three dietitians. Of the three dietitians, two were certified diabetes educator. The panel rated the booklet very highly; the mean overall rating was 22.4(±1.2) with 25 being the highest possible score. Overall, 100% of the evaluators would recommend this booklet for patients in their setting. CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare professionals found the booklet to be accurate, culturally relevant, and useful for their Chinese- American patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This is a descriptive study, carried out starting from the elaboration of an educative manual specifically produced for this purpose. A total of 23 caregivers and their children were investigated and the following principal results were obtained: 22 of the caregivers were mothers of the children with the disorder and were their principal or unique caregiver; all the children suffered myelomeningocele as the cause of the neurogenic bladder dysfunction and there was no predominance of either gender. The majority of the caregivers understood reasonably well the significance of neurogenic bladder dysfunction and the importance of the C.I.C. They followed the proposed technique of the procedure, observed an improvement in the child s health and reported that the manual was very important and adequate. The planning of the teaching method of C.I.C. proposed in this research, proved to be effective in regards to health education, as was confirmed in the evaluation of caregivers in respect to the cognitive, psychomotor and emotional aspects. Moreover, the role of nurses as educators in this field must be stressed, since they provide essential qualified assistance to caregivers and children with neurogenic bladder dysfunction.
