Managerial responses to the new market; a case study of the appliance industry.Gampel, Dana Peta January 1995 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts. / This dissertation examines two socially significant effects of Eskorn's Electricity For All
programme: The new market that emerges once electricity becomes accessible, and
managerial responses to this new market within the appliance industry. The research
question asks how and why management in the appliance sector responds to the new
market's demands. In answering this question, the new market is initially assessed. I
have shown who constitutes this market and that these consumers prioritise top-of-the-range
appliances. I have expanded on Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the habitus and used
this to uncover these explanations of the new market. These findings have emerged
through content analyses, in-depth interviews, a group workshop and participant
observation methods.
The dissertation then examines how and why management respond in specific ways to
these market demands. I have assessed, through the use of a case study, why and how
Tek Corp. the market leader in the appliance industry - responds strategically to the new
market. I have examined management's response by addressing structures and responses
within both the production and consumption phases of the circuit of capital. This
dissertation has found that new types of competition are emerging within the appliance
industry as a result of responses to the new market.
I have thus argued that by assessing both production and consumption and by using the
concept of the habitus, holistic explanations about capitalist relations in the appliance
industry emerge. / Andrew Chakane 2018

Transient stability analysis of multimachine power systems by catastrophe theoryMihirig, Ali Mohamed January 1987 (has links)
Transient stability analysis is an important part of power system planning and operation. For large power systems, such analysis is very demanding in computation time. On-line transient stability assessment will be necessary for secure and reliable operation of power systems in the near future because systems are operated close to their maximum limits.
In the last two decades, a vast amount of research work has been done in the area of fast transient stability assessment by direct methods. The major difficulties associated with direct methods are the limitations in the power system model, determination of transient stability regions and adaptation to changes in operating conditions. In this thesis catastrophe theory is used to determine the transient stability regions. Taylor series expansion is used to find the energy balance equation in terms of clearing time and system transient parameters. The energy function is then put in the form of a catastrophe manifold from which the bifurcation set is extracted. The bifurcation set represents the transient stability region in terms of the power system transient parameters bounded by the transient stability limits. The transient stability regions determined are valid for any changes in loading conditions and fault location. The transient stability problem is dealt with in the two dimensions of transient stability limits and critical clearing times. Transient stability limits are given by the bifurcation set and the critical clearing times are calculated from the catastrophe manifold equation. The method achieves a breakthrough in the modelling problem because the effects of exciter response, flux decay and systems damping can all be included in the transient stability analysis. Numerical examples of one-machine infinite-bus and multi-machine power systems show very good agreement with the time solution in the practical range of first swing stability analysis. The method presented fulfills all requirements for on-line assessment of transient stability of power systems. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of / Graduate

ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODES FOR ORGANIC CATIONS AND PHARMACEUTICALS (ISE, POLYMER MEMBRANE CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS).CUNNINGHAM, LAWRENCE JAMES. January 1984 (has links)
Three areas related to Polymer Membrane Ion-Selective Electrodes were investigated. The first two concered (1) their application to analysis of organic cations and pharmaceuticals, and (2) the use of electrochemically polymerized films for potentiometric sensors. The third area focused on the development of a computer controlled data acquisition system for studying Ion Transport at the Interface of Two Immiscible Electrolyte Solutions (ITTIES). Coated wire Polymer Membrane Ion-Selective Electrodes (PMISEs) based on dinonylnapthalenesulfonic acid (DNNS) were prepared for several alkylammonium ions and pharmaceuticals. Selectivity coefficients and other operational characteristics were predictable from calculated distribution constants. Specifically, Log k ᵖᵒᵗ(i)(j) values increased linearly with carbon number in a homologous series of alkylammonium ions. Among cations of the same carbon number, interference increased tenfold with each additional substitution in going from quaternary, tertiary, secondary and primary alkylammonium ions. Addition of hydrophilic subtituent groups to cyclohexylammonium interferents further diminished electrode response. Electrodes for several important pharmaceuticals, namely cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, protriptyline, cimetidine, lidoflazine, verapamil, acebutalol, diltiazem, and nicardipine, displayed nearly theoretical response down to micromolar concentrations. Their selectivity was consistent with calculated distribution constants. Selectivity was independent of sensitivity, suggesting that the magnitude of each was determined by the distribution of both the free cation and the association complex of this cation with DNNS. The polymerization of phenol derivatives onto copper rendered the resulting films responsive to counter-ions of the electroactive species present in the polymerization medium. Those incorporating Aliquat 336 (tricaprylmethylammonium chloride) showed response to various anions, while others prepared using a sulfonated phenol derivative (m-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid) responded to tributylammonium. The films had short lifetimes due to poor adhesion to the copper substrate. Construction of a computer controlled data acquisition system provided a rapid method for obtaining electrocapillary data simultaneously with the current-scan polarogram. The system was evaluated by observation of ion-transfer of a variety of alkylammonium ions.
