White (1827-1915) seeking to define the concept of sanctification in each author. A description may be found of the factors that led to the elaboration of Wesley s and White s perception. Similarities between both authors are verified, such as continuous growth, negation of sinlessness, the need for constant dependency in God and obedience to His law. Differences between both authors are also studied, such as Wesley s concepts of instantaneous sanctification, the second work of grace, and White s concepts of character perfection and spheres of perfection. This work also discusses contributions and implications that may be presented to the theological debate in today s theology, such as human finiteness, sin and human nature, religious motivations for praxis and divine/human collaboration for development.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Carlos Flavio Teixeira.pdf: 2910487 bytes, checksum: 5f22f4cbfc5d01fe0ebd2a483f6c3bb3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-05 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This dissertation presents a non-exhaustive approach about the theme of freedom from the perspective of a North American Protestant Christian theologian named Ellen G. White. The dissertation starts with a study about her life and the social-cultural and geopolitical contexts, in which she lived in, approaching her literary writings and the importance of her way to systematize her thoughts in order to understand her reasoning about the proposed theme. It is taken as a criterion for analysis her system of organizing her thoughts in three theological lines of thinking named respectively Integral Theology, Theology of Commitment, and the Theology of Discipleship that together constitute her theological perspective of freedom. The first line of reasoning justifies the reasons of freedom, the second one explains how liberty occurs in human being, and the third one explains the itinerary of its positive exteriorization for humanity. The dissertation continues exploring the concepts, foundations, features and thematic developments of each element which comprises the theological itinerary that has been mentioned, and highlighting the theologians that strongly influenced the author and pointing out her closest perspectives compare to the posteriors theologians. The dissertation concludes proposing that, by the authors perspective, freedom is a significant expression of a committed life to serve with love in a piety way. Thus, freedom is a condition lived for those who believe and surrender themselves to God, experiencing an enduring life of love and self-sacrificing service to the neighbor, a reality that is witnessed through a genuine Christian piety. And lastly, the dissertation challenges the reader to an urgent perception, critical thinking, and a balanced proactive reaction towards the humanists ideologies of an exclusive anthropocentric matrix, presenting them as the main foundations of postmodern misconceptions about freedom. Given this reality, the dissertation proposes to rehumanize the idea of liberty through a theocentric perspective, by returning to God and His word, and for this action Ellen G. White s proposal seems to be a Teo-humanizing potential of great value that may enable even the harmonious development of human wholeness.

White, focusing especially on the reflections contained in one of his works, The Great Controversy. Therefore this research describes the social, historical and religious lived by the author pointing out the main factors that influenced his life. Then we seek to understand what the relationship of her writings to the Bible, analyzing its hermeneutics. In the final part there is a description of the history of the work's composition, followed by an analysis of it, seeking to assess the impact that your thoughts have brought their time and still reflect today. Although Ellen G. White is not a theoretical renowned and considering its limitations and its little academic training their reflections produced a religious ethos in the name of which he was co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventists, who encouraged them to be very active in the defense these principles. Through this research it was found that continued operation is the result of a vision that integrates the theme of freedom of conscience not only a historical dimension, but also eschatological / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo aprofundar a compreensão da Liberdade de consciência no pensamento de Ellen G White, focando especialmente nas reflexões contidas em uma de suas obras, O Grande Conflito.

The centrality of Jesus Christ in God's acts of creation, reconciliation, renewal and fulfilment : the views of John Calvin and Ellen G White

Jones, Patrick Patrese 05 1900 (has links)
In John Calvin and Ellen G White’s sense making approaches God’s act of redemption and reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ takes the centre stage in the foursome of God’s acts expressed in the biblical historical timeline as creation, reconciliation in Jesus Christ, renewal through the Holy Spirit and fulfilment at the end of time. While the 16th century Calvin emphasised God’s acts of creation and reconciliation in Christ more than God’s acts of renewal and fulfilment, the 19th century White’s emphasis was more on God’s acts of reconciliation in Christ and fulfilment at the end of time than on creation and renewal through the Spirit. With all the differences in their sense making approaches their central perspectival focus in their writings, sayings and doings is the way God and humanity, heaven and earth are closely connected in a unity without being fused and mixed in Jesus Christ. Their central christological theme of ‘God staying God’ and ‘human staying human’ in an interactional substantialist sense in Christ designates the great alternative view that differs on the one hand, from the view of the trans-substantialist option in which the human being Christ Jesus is in a sacramental-sacred way transformed into ‘a divine human being’ –, and on the other hand, the view of the consubstantialist option in which the human being Jesus is permeated and diffused by his divinity, thereby becoming ‘the human God.’ Calvin and White in their reflection operating within the realm of divine historicity that is staying within the biblical historical timeline from Genesis to Revelation were viewed by many as not theologians in the real sense of the word. Calvin and may be to a greater extent White worked and contributed to the new and emerging field of Faith Studies in which a theologian or theorist of faith cannot reflect on God, human beings or the natural cosmic world in three separate avenues as was commonly the case with speculative and scholastic theologies in history. White’s Faith Studies contribution is in the global arena of theology where the omnipresent ‘–logies’ of mainline church theologies such as Christology, Ecclesiology, Pneumatology and Eschatology hold sway.
