This work analyzes the meetings, assimilations, conflicts and tensions surrounding the history of the Colégio Americano Granbery, between 1889 and 1930, compared to the Methodist missionary enterprise which the institution was part of. In this sense, the central object of study is the educational model constructed by their missionaries American leaders. Considering the cultural contact zone constructed between the missionaries and the body of the elite liberal intellectuals of the city, I try to understand, too, as was shared political culture anchored in an image of progress and modernity of the United States, directed to the achievement of the educational project. This work also discusses the different meanings that the notion of Americanism assumed in political debates and identity in the United States and Brazil, from the process of extroversion United States in the late nineteenth to the twentieth century, considering the role of missionary protestant in the process.
