Looking for still, in his preparation, pursue theoretical and methodological references that helped us to understand the actions of social groups of the past based on the interests that guided their actions in that environment. For this purpose we will make use of several types of sources: iconography, cartography, written sources and material culture. These sources, in turn, will be discussed in the light of the literature used in order to discuss and situate the object of our research in this paper, the Parish of St. Michael the Ipojuca in their political, economic, social and cultural aspects. No decontextualizes it, however, the political and geographic divisions of the Humid Forest and why not, the context of his own captaincy of Pernambuco. / A presente Dissertação de Mestrado, intitulada “História da Implantação e Desenvolvimento da Freguesia de São Miguel do Ipojuca entre 1594 – 1780: contada a partir dos seus engenhos açucareiros”, possui uma proposta de pesquisa histórica direcionada para uma História Social e Ambiental do processo de consolidação da freguesia de São Miguel do Ipojuca enquanto grande centro produtor de açúcar da região da Mata Úmida de Pernambuco. Buscando ainda, em sua elaboração seguir referências teóricas e metodológicas que nos ajudassem a compreender as ações dos grupos sociais do passado a partir dos interesses que guiavam as suas ações naquele meio. Com este intuito faremos uso dos mais diversos tipos de fontes: iconografias, cartografia, fontes escritas e cultura material. Essas fontes, por sua vez, serão discutidas à luz da bibliografia utilizada, a fim de situar o objeto de nossa pesquisa neste trabalho, a Freguesia de Ipojuca, em seus aspectos políticos, econômicos, sociais e culturais. Sem, todavia, ignorar o recorte político e geográfico da Mata Úmida e da própria capitania de Pernambuco.
