Words in the world: The place of literature in Early Modern England / Place of literature in Early Modern EnglandHanan, Rachel Ann, 1978- 09 1900 (has links)

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / "Words in the World" details the ways that the place of rhetoric and literature in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries changes in response to the transition from natural philosophy to Cartesian mechanism. In so doing, it also offers a constructive challenge to today's environmental literary criticism, challenging environmental literary critics' preoccupation with themes of nature and, by extension, with representational language. Reading authors from Thomas More to Philip Sidney and Ben Jonson through changes in physics, cartography, botany, and zoology, "Words in the World" argues that literature occupies an increasingly separate place from the real world. "Place" in this context refers to spatiotemporal dimensions, taxonomic affiliations, and the relationships between literature and the physical world. George Puttenham's Arte of English Poesie (1589), for instance, limits the way that rhetoric is part of the world to the ways that it can be numbered (meter, rhyme scheme, and so forth); metaphor and other tropes, however, are duplicitous. In contrast, for an earlier era of natural philosophers, tropes were the grammar of the universe. "Words in the World" culminates with Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy (1621/1651), in which the product of literature's split from the physical world is literary melancholy. Turning to today's environmental literary criticism, the dissertation thus historicizes ecocriticism's nostalgic melancholy for the extratextual physical world. Indeed, Early Modern authors' inquiries into the place of literature and the relationships between that place and the physical world in terms of literary forms and structures, suggests the importance of ecoformalism to Early Modern scholarship. In particular, this dissertation argues that Early Modern authors treat literary structures as types of performative language. Marlowe and monarchyMay, Simon January 2015 (has links)
Focusing on the works of Christopher Marlowe (1564-93), this thesis explores the complex engagement of popular drama with the political and religious writing of the Elizabethan fin de siècle. It focuses on the five plays by Marlowe that feature royal protagonists: 1-2 Tamburlaine (1587), Dido, Queen of Carthage (1588), Edward II (1592), and The Massacre at Paris (1593). By interpreting each play in its immediate political context, it shows that Marlowe did not deal with monarchy in the abstract but responded to current affairs - from the incursions of the Ottoman Empire to the threat of the Spanish Armada, from the conspiracy claims of Catholic polemic to the debate surrounding England's involvement in continental warfare. The introduction situates the thesis in the critical and historiographical context relating to Marlowe and to the relationship between literature and politics in the early modern period; it provides the justification for reading Marlowe's plays as topical statements. Chapter One looks at 1-2 Tamburlaine in the light of contemporary attitudes to the Ottoman-Safavid War. Chapter Two shows that Dido, Queen of Carthage adapted the stories and tropes of polemic to reflect fears of Catholic conspiracy and Spanish invasion. Chapter Three reads Edward II as a creative response to the print war of 1591-2, which centred on the moral character of the queen's closest counsellors. Chapter Four proposes that Marlowe's final play, The Massacre at Paris, employed arguments drawn from Reason of State to influence decisions at the 1593 Parliament. The thesis concludes by suggesting that despite Marlowe's reputation as a radical overreacher, his drama displays considerable sympathy for the monarchs who must rule precariously and without the option of private happiness.

Any study centred in the exploratlon and analysis of the medieval and Elizabethen images of the Jew might, with some justification. seem redundant and impertinent to a modern reader; for the third quarter of this century has witnessed the almost total obviatlon of a great many such time-honoured images and symbols. The immemorial figure of the Wandering Jew, to cite a sIngle instance, has for the past two decades, attained his country and place of destination - history no longer condemning him to tarry until the Second Coming of the Messiah. Even the deicide Jew has been granted complete absolution, by an offlcial decree from the Vatican, for his complicity in the killing of Christ. It would seem, moreover, that the atrocities perpetrated against the Jews during the course of the Second World War have resulted in an alteration of the Jewish image radically transforming It from one of contempt into one of compassion a living symbol of "man's inhumanlty to man"; and the modern European dramatist has revived the Jewlsh figure on the stage as an instance of almost personal atonement or, alternatively, as a means of scourging the state of middle-class mind which abetted the persecution of the Nazi regime, attacking state policies of inactio and deploring the failure of influentlal powers to resist the blatant inhumanlty perpetrated within Its boundaries. Max Frisch's Andorre and Rolf Hochhuth's The Representative embody, each in its own way the 2Oth century's sense of shame and horror at those events with which the century has yet to come to terms. They are both extreme reactions agalnst the image of the Jew whlch the Nazi propogandized in the 1930s. And the image which the Nazis propogandized was curiously consistent wlth the medieval and Elizabethan images of the Jew.

Imaginative space and the construction of community : the drama of Augustine’s two cities in the English RenaissanceMinton, Gretchen E. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis traces the development of Augustine's paradigm of the two cities (the
City of God and the earthly city) in the cultural poetics of the English Renaissance.
Although scholars have studied the impact of Augustine's model on theology, historical
consciousness, and political theories in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, little attention
has been paid to the genealogy of the more specifically "literary" aspects of the idea of
the two cities. My line of inquiry is the relationship between Augustine's model of the
two cities and the idea of drama. More specifically, this project explores the ways in
which the idea o f the two cities spoke to various communities—of readers, of
worshippers, and ultimately, of playgoers.
Augustine's view of drama is divided; on the one hand, he speaks at length about
the evil influence of Roman spectacles, but on the other hand, he acknowledges that the
world itself is a theatre for God's cosmic drama. However, this employment of drama is
limited in Augustine's writing, because his greater commitment is to the idea of
Scripture. This interplay between drama and Scripture, I suggest, is an integral part of
the two-cities model that is related to his theology of history.
The tension between the idea of drama and the idea o f the book is evident in
English Reformation appropriations of Augustine's model, such as those of John Bale
and John Foxe, who changed the terminology to "the two churches." The second section
of my thesis shows how these Reformers contained their own "dramatic" adaptations of
the two cities within an even narrower theatre than Augustine's—a theatre constituted
and contained by the Word.
Shifting the focus to secular drama, the final section concerns Shakespeare's use
of some facets of the two-cities model in his Jacobean plays, and examines the effects of
removing this construct from its religious context. The result, I argue, is a theatre that
celebrates its own aesthetic power and flaunts its sheer physicality, resisting the

“The Pastoral Field: Local Ecologies in Early Modern Literature” excavates the ways in which pastoral literature registers the role nature-human interaction played in shaping protracted struggles over land use and ownership, and in the degradation and improvement of natural landscapes. Revising a longstanding critical tradition that understands early modern pastoral as primarily allegorical, the project instead insists that the form can also accommodate topical thinking about regional ecologies. Shifting the emphasis away from the Elizabethan court towards local agricultural politics, it unearths the ways in which natural crises such as flooding, famine, sheep rot, and soil degradation hastened processes of agricultural improvement and enclosure—and how those processes were in turn mediated, counter-factually imagined, and actively promoted within the literary devices of pastoral. Each of my four chapters locates pastoral plays, poems, romances, and country-house entertainments in the particular landscapes that shaped their development— landscapes that were, in turn, reconfigured by the literary and political concerns of Elizabethan authors.

Performing barbers, surgeons and barber-surgeons in early modern English literatureDecamp, Eleanor Sian January 2011 (has links)
This study addresses the problem critics have faced in identifying contemporary perceptions of the barber, surgeon and barber-surgeon in early modernity by examining the literature, predominantly the drama, from the period. The name ‘barber-surgeon’ is not given formally to any character in extant early modern plays; only within the dialogue or during stage business is a character labelled the barber-surgeon. Barbers and surgeons are simultaneously separate and doubled-up characters. The differences and cross-pollinations between their practices play out across the literature and tell us not just about their cultural, civic and occupational histories but also about how we interpret patterns in language, onomastics, dramaturgy, materiality, acoustics and semiology. Accordingly, the argument in this study is structured thematically and focuses on the elements of performance, moving from discussions of names to discussions of settings and props, disguises, stage directions and semiotics, and from sound effects and music, to voices and rhetorical turns. In doing so, it questions what it means in early modernity to have a developed literary identity, or be deprived of one. The barber-surgeon is a trope in early modern literature because he has a tangible social impact and an historical meaning derived from his barbery and surgery roots, and consequently a richly allusive idiom which exerted attraction for audiences. But the figure of the barber-surgeon can also be a trope in investigating how representation works. An aesthetic of doubleness, which this study finds to be diversely constructed, prevails in barbers’, surgeons’ and barber-surgeons’ literary conception, and the barber-surgeon in the popular imagination is created from opposing cultural stereotypes. The literature from the period demonstrates why a guild union of barbers and surgeons was never harmonious: they are opposing dramaturgical as well as medical figures. This study has a wide-ranging literary corpus, including early modern play texts, ballads, pamphlets, guild records, dictionaries, inventories, medical treatises and archaeological material, and contributes to the critical endeavours of the medical humanities, cultural materialists, theatre historians and linguists.

Legal play : the literary culture of the Inns of Court, 1572-1634Whitted, Brent Edward 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the social politics of literary production at
London's Inns of Court from 1572 to 1634. Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of
cultural production are widened beyond his own French academic context so
that the Inns may be located as institutions central to the formation of literary
and, in particular, dramatic culture in early modern London.
A significant part of Bourdieu's research has concerned the
establishment of a foundation for a sociological analysis of literary works. The
literary field, Bourdieu argues, is but one of many possible fields of cultural
production—social networks of struggle over valued economic, cultural,
scientific, or religious resources. As a historically constituted arena of activity
with its own specific institutions, rules, and capital, the juridical field of early
modern London was a competitive market in which legal agents struggled for
the power to determine the law. Within this field, the Inns of Court served as
unchartered law schools in which the valuable cultural currency of the
common law was transmitted to the resident students, whose association
with this currency was crucial for their pursuit of social prestige.
Focusing on the four Inns of Court as central institutions in the
juridical field and their relationship with the larger political and economic
forces of London, that is, the field of power, the thesis demonstrates how the
literary art associated with these institutions relates to the students' struggle
for social legitimation, particularly in their interaction with the City and the
Crown. By demonstrating how the structures of literary texts reflect the
structures of the relationship between the Inns and other centers of urban
power, this analysis examines the pivotal role(s) played by law students in the
development of London's literary culture.
