The goals of this work were to characterize the flower opening in Epidendrum ibaguense, evaluate some vegetative growth parameters, to determine the stage of harvest for the inflorescence, evaluate its sensitivity to ethylene, and the influence of sucrose pulsing, vase solution, STS and 1-MCP on postharvest longevity. The flowers were also stored at 10oC to estimate its behavior on cold storage. It was established that the stage of flower opening for harvesting was when a minimum of 20 flowers were fully opened. Spraying the inflorescences with 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 mg L-1 ethephon reduced the flower longevity, causing wilting of the petals. Pulsing the flowers with 20% sucrose for 12 hours or with 2 mM STS for 30 minutes improved the longevity by 44% (7,48 days) and 54% (9,27 days), respectively, when compared with untreated ones. Treatment of the inflorescences with 1 g m-3 EthylBloc for six hours improved the longevity by 73% (12,85 days), compared to control treatment. No improvement of longevity was observed if 1-MCP treated flower were pulsed with sucrose. Treating the flower with 1-MCP before or after storing it at 10oC for 7 and 14 days improved the post-storage longevity compared to control untreated flowers. After 21 days of storage at 10oC there was a sharp decrease on vase life, even when the flowers were treated with 1-MCP, due to presence of chilling injury symptoms.
