Social wasps are insects of the Hymenoptera order of great ecological importance, mainly acting as predators in the environment. The diversity of social wasps has been recently extensively studied in the Atlantic Forest biome, however gaps remain to be fulfilled. This study aimed to establish an inventory of social wasps (Vespidae, Polistinae) in an Atlantic Forest area on the Mantiqueira Mountains range (Serra da Mantiqueira). The study covered different typical altitudinal vegetation types in the municipality of Campos do Jordão, as well as areas in the fort of the Mountain range, in Pindamonhangaba, in order to provide comparisons between the communities sampled in different vegetation types and between two elevation gradients (from 500 to 1,000 meters and from 1,500 to 2,000 meters). In Campos do Jordão a total of 17 species of social wasps were assembled, and just in the sampled trails 15 species were collected. In Pindamonhangaba 35 species of social wasps were sampled, and only on the trails 34 species were collected. The sampled richness in Pindamonhangaba is the second largest found in an Atlantic Forest area, and when the species sampled in Campos do Jordao and Pindamonhangaba are added, with both effective the preliminary samplings, we obtain a total of 40 species, and this is the greatest richness described in a social wasp fauna inventory for this biome. When comparing the richness of inventories in nearby regions, the one held in the Papagaio Mountains range (Serra do Papagaio) showed a greater similarity to the Campos do Jordão sample, while the one with the highest Jaccard similarity index with Pindamonhangaba was the inventory of São Goncalo do Sapucaí. These two surveys were conducted at quotas altitudinal closely resembling those analyzed here, as well as similar vegetation types. The occurrence of few exclusive species at the higher gradient and many in the gradient covering from 500 to 1,000 meters indicate that the environmental conditions afforded by the high altitude is a limiting factor in the occurrence of some species of wasps, especially for those belonging to Mischocyttarini and Polistini tribes, which occurred with high richness in the lower elevation gradient. We conclude that the elevation has influence on the social wasps community composition, since it generate different micro-habitats and microclimate in the gradients, important features for the use of different substrates for nesting and for the maintenance of temperature of the colony. / CNPq: 141975/2012-1
