By identifing the dificulties found by school Principal attemps to the abilities that should be improved to face them, once the school main objetive is the student s development as a person and his preparation to a qualified work as a citizen. A case study was undertaken in a state high school in a countryside town of São Paulo state. Among the Principal s work possibilities stand out the availability of teachers who are officially hired full time job in the school; the acess and the proximity the Region Educational Direction; the school area. The limits stand out the lack of the school historical contest valorization; the presence of bureaucratic structure, the relation with the system that imposes some determinations without considering peculiarities, the absence of a pedagogic proposal and the violence. The school Principal should improve abilities of working with a group participation, to assign tasks, to be creative, dynamic and able to searche for alternatives to the reality he works with; to think about his actions in order to achieve coherence between practice and theory. / O presente estudo buscou identificar, no cotidiano escolar, as possibilidades e os limites do trabalho do Diretor em uma escola estadual do ensino médio. Visou esclarecer os obstáculos encontrados pela Diretora de escola e as habilidades que devem ser desenvolvidas para enfrentá-los, tendo a escola a finalidade de desenvolver a pessoa, prepará-la para a cidadania e qualificá-la para o trabalho. Foi realizado um estudo de caso, em uma escola estadual do ensino médio, em uma cidade do Interior paulista. Dentre as possibilidades de trabalho do Diretor, destacaram-se a disponibilidade dos professores, por serem efetivos com sede na Escola, em sua maioria; o acesso e proximidade da Escola em relação à Diretoria Regional de Educação, o espaço físico da unidade escolar. Quanto aos limites, destacaram-se a falta de valorização do contexto histórico da Escola; a presença da estrutura burocrática; a relação com o sistema, que impõe algumas determinações, desconsiderando as especificidades; a ausência de uma proposta pedagógica e a violência. O Diretor de escola deve desenvolver habilidades de: trabalhar com a participação do grupo, delegar tarefas, ser criativo, dinâmico e capaz de buscar alternativas para a realidade na qual atua, refletir sobre sua ação, buscando coerência entre teoria e prática.
