Tese (doutorado)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Humanas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História, 2015. / No presente estudo, procedemos a uma outra leitura do abolicionismo em Minas Gerais, orientadas por dois principais objetivos. Primeiramente, o de mostrar e desmontar a construção historiográfica da ausência de tensões e conflitos, do clima de “plena paz” em que teria ocorrido a abolição da escravidão na província mineira. Como movimento histórico que foi, o abolicionismo encontra-se permeado de lutas, disputas, resistências, mediações e negociações, apresentando outras faces. Ele envolveu outros protagonistas e estratégias de luta, além do debate nos âmbitos dos gabinetes e do Parlamento e também dos movimentos sociais organizados. O outro objetivo foi o de conferir visibilidade e dizibilidade à atuação abolicionista de outros atores sociais, com destaque para as mulheres escravas e livres, quebrando o silêncio discursivamente construído em torno de suas ações. As primeiras, particularmente pelas práticas de insubmissão, rebeldia e negociação e também pelo recurso à polícia e à justiça, que lhes conferiam visibilidade pública. Defendemos que tais práticas tinham uma dimensão política, na medida em que, ao final e ao cabo, questionavam o domínio senhorial, a legitimidade social da escravidão, contribuindo para o esgarçamento desta instituição e para sua abolição. Quanto às mulheres livres, dos estratos superiores e médios da sociedade, sua atuação no cenário público mineiro, feita sob os signos da domesticidade, acaba por subvertê-la, pois seus ativismo pro-abolição tinha propósitos e cunho políticos. / In this study, we carried out another reading of abolitionism in Minas Gerais, guided by two main objectives. First of all, we show the historiographical construction of the absence of tensions and conflicts, the peaceful atmosphere that would have been the abolition of slavery in the Minas province. As historical movement that it was, the abolitionism lies permeated of fights, disputes, resistance, mediations and negotiations, presenting other faces. It involved other protagonists and fight strategies, besides the debate within the offices and the Parliament and also of organized social movements. The other objective was to give visibility to other abolitionist actors involvement, especially the female slaves and free women, breaking the silence discursively built around their actions. The first ones, particularly by the practices of insubordination, rebellion and negotiation and also by the use of police and justice, which gave them public visibility. We argue that such practices had a political dimension that ended questioning the seigniorial domain, the social legitimacy of slavery, contributing to the destruction of its institution and the abolition. As for the free women of the upper and medium classes of society, its performance on the public scenario of Minas Gerais, formed under the signs of domesticity, turns out to subvert it, because hers pro-abolition activism had political nature and purposes.

Cientes dos projetos emancipacionistas em debate no Parlamento nacional e da Guerra Civil nos Estados Unidos, escravos das lavras de diamantes, fazendas e cidades do Serro e Diamantina planejaram uma "guerra contra os brancos" para obter sua liberdade. Eles contavam com o apoio de comunidades quilombolas e homens forros. Através da análise desta revolta, esperamos trazer à tona as culturas e experiências da escravidão no nordeste mineiro, assim como suas relações com o cenário político da década de 1860 / Abstract: This dissertation tells the story of the Serro slave rebellion, which gathered more than four hundred rebels in Minas Gerais, during the month of October, 1864. Aware of the emancipationist projects debated in Brazil's National Assembly and the U.S. Civil War, slaves from the diamond mines, farms and the cities of Serro and Diamantina planned a "war against the whites" in order to obtain their freedom. They expected to be supported by maroon communities and black freedmen. Through the analysis of this revolt, we wish to reveal the slave cultures and experiences in the mineiro northeast, as well as its relationship with the political landscape of the 1860 / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História
