Chachagua, Freddy Antonio 05 1900 (has links)
To date, the Latin American essay remains little studied, certainly compared to other literary genres such as the novel, poetry and theater. This thesis examines prevailing theorists' conceptions of the essay and its historical development in Latin America. Employing the notions of cultural identity and difference, which have long been central to Latin American critical thought, this study distances the development of the essay in Latin America from Spanish colonial writings of the sixteenth century. In its place, this study proposes an innovative classification scheme that incorporates cultural codes as its main criteria in order to provide a more equitable treatment of essays from areas that have traditionally been marginalized in standard chronologically based classification schemes. Some of the paradigms used in this study to defend the integrity and specificity of the Latin American essay and culture are Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's affirmation of the values of the continent's indigenous pre-columbian heritage, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's discursive reinvention of South America, and Jose Marti's notion of hibridez—a cultural and racial complex mixture rooted in the region's history—as an affirmation of a continental Latin American cultural identity. This thesis demonstrates that since Latin American essays diverge thematically from colonialist discourse, studies of the origins of the Latin American essay do not have to perpetuate the colonialist legacy.

Cripa, Ival de Assis 15 June 2007 (has links)

The present study addresses the essays on the history and modern poetry written by Octavio Paz and intends to analyze the tensions between the temporality of the modern concept of history and the temporality of poetry in his criticism work. In the first chapter, we analyze the tension between rectilinear time and cyclic temporalities, in his literary criticism essays. In the second chapter, we verify how the Mexican poet and essay writer interprets the history of poetry, based on the endless conflict between analogy and irony, which are constitutive concepts of his perspective, both in his interpretations of modern poetry and in his history essays. We have recovered the irony and analogy concepts in Octavio Paz¿s criticism work and, using them, we reflect about the dialectics of time, both in his literary criticism essays and in his history essays. In the third chapter, we analyze the way Octavio Paz reflects about history, from the point-of-view of continuity and rupture (inspired by the modern poetic movement). We have recovered, in the essays on Mexican and Latin American cultural and political history, the way the Mexican poet addresses the multiplicity of times which constitute contemporary history in the continent. We have verified how much, in his work, the indigenous past and the Spanish cultural heritage remain incrustrated in the present time of Mexico and Latin America. In the fourth chapter, we discuss how the consideration of multiple temporalities constitutive of history inspired the poet¿s perspective of Spanish-American literature, always considering them from the point-of-view of the tension between the world literary history and specific characteristics of the continent¿s literature. To conclude, we have recovered La Otra Voz, the last and most important essay written by Octavio Paz, in which he re-discusses the main themes addressed in his criticism work, in the context of the main events of the end of the 20th century / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Um diletante na universidade : historia e critica literaria em Alexandre Eulalio / A diletante at the university : Alexandre Eulalio's criticism and literary history

Rodrigues, Fabio Della Paschoa 28 February 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Antonio Arnoni Prado / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-11T07:29:29Z (GMT). This dissertation examines the literary criticism produced by Alexandre Eulalio (1932-1988), tracing his intellectual trajectory from the beginning of his contribution to newspapers and magazines as a young student, going through his work as editor of Revista do Livro, until he joins Campinas State University as a guest professor. With a formation especially marked by autodidacticism, at a time when the figure of dilettante was not well regarded, it would be at university that criticism should take most of the multiskilled intellectual¿s time, who worked as editor, historian, critic, teacher and researcher. This research seeks to support the claim that his work as critic was constricted by that as journalist, editor and historian, finding shelter for its later development, in a university environment, where Eulalio comes first as a visiting professor at foreign universities and afterwards as a professor of notorious knowledge at Unicamp. This study also examines how the criticism of Eulalio, which gathers historical knowledge and formal analysis, is moved by the passion and identification of the critic with the contemplated object, something that interferes in his selection of authors, in his treatment of the subject, and in the composition of criticism itself, reflecting features of the work or author under analysis / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária
