O objetivo é refletir sobre a opção da tradução ou não desses termos e suas implicações para os estudos da tradução. Parto de uma breve introdução da formação neológica tradicionalmente conhecida por empréstimo para, em seguida, revisar as contribuições de alguns gramáticos e lingüistas. A questão da tradução será abordada a partir de alguns trabalhos de orientação lingüística e de outros que seguem a vertente pós-estruturalista dos estudos da tradução, em especial, os pós-colonialistas. Finalmente, tomo por base o pensamento desenvolvido por Jacques Derrida para redimensionar a relação língua materna e língua estrangeira a partir do transbordamento e do jogo de significação entre as línguas da tradução. Procuro argumentar que a forte tendência na área da informática de resistir à tradução de determinados termos provoca a desestabilização de algumas noções fundamentadas pela lingüística estrutural, especialmente a de língua materna e de língua estrangeira, ao mesmo tempo em que deflagra o transbordamento das línguas envolvidas na tradução. Parto do princípio de que o significado e sua origem não se encontram no significante para mostrar como a opção do tradutor pelo empréstimo, assim como qualquer outra, não pode recuperar seu significado original, uma vez que manter o termo estrangeiro não garante o resgate de um significado estável e livre de interpretações. A multiplicidade de línguas comum à tradução de textos de informática impõe ao tradutor o double bind, a necessidade e a impossibilidade da tradução. Quer traduza ou não a palavra estrangeira, estará produzindo significados e realizando um ato tradutório em que há intervenção e transformação e não meramente reprodução do significado pelo fato de manter o significante da língua de partida / Abstract: This dissertation has as its object of investigation the inclusion of English terms in the Brazilian Portuguese, particularly in the field of computing. The aim is to reflect upon the option of translating or not such terms and its implications for the translation studies. After a brief introduction of the neologic formations traditionally known as loan words, I go over the contributions of some gramamarians and linguists. The question of translation is considered through the analysis of some linguistics-oriented approaches as well as some post-structuralist works, especially those concerned with post-colonial issues. Finally, I base myself on the works of Jacques Derrida in order to rethink the relation between mother tongue and foreign language, taking into account the play of differences between the languages of translation. I intend to argue that the strong tendency we found in the field of computing of resisting the translation of some specific terms undermines the stabilization of some notions founded on structural linguistics, in particular the pair mother tongue and foreign language as well as it indicates the overflowing of languages involved in translation. Based on the principIe that the signified and its origin are not found in the signifier, I intend to show that the option of the translator for loan words cannot recover the original signified, since the maintenance of the foreign term does not guarantee the recovering of a stable signified tree of interpretations. The multiplicity of languages common to the translation of computing texts imposes on the translator the double bind, the necessity and the impossibility of translation. Either translating or not the foreign word, the translator will be producing meanings and also performing a translation act in which there is intervention and transformation; not merely reproduction of the signified because the signifier of the source language was kept in its original form / Mestrado / Tradução / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada
