Among the officers sent to Tibet by the government of Republican China, fifteen were investigated in detail in this dissertation based on their significant influences on Han-Tibetan relations. I refer to them as the "special envoys on mission to Tibet". After examining the background of the envoys' mission, their activities in Tibet, their perception about Tibet and the Tibetans, and their roles in Tibetan affairs, the author argues that there was a substantial discrepancy between the information obtained by these envoys "on the spot" for their central government and the reality that was happening in Tibet. It was the strong Han nationalist historical context in which the envoys and their government perceived and dealt with Tibetan issues that resulted in a more complicated and delicate development of Han-Tibetan relationships. The historically formed inequality between the Han Chinese and non-Han minorities who scattered around the frontiers still has impacts upon contemporary China's ethic agendas. / This dissertation explores the problematic yet relatively unstudied topic of the relationship between Chinese government and Tibet during the Republican period, 1912-1949. Drawing on the abundant English and recently declassified Chinese archival materials, as well as plentiful travel records of some individuals who traveled to the Tibetan areas during that time, this dissertation firstly presents a historical narrative of officers whom the government of the Republican China sent to Tibet, and thus attempting to reconstruct an objective picture of the Republican China's relations with Tibet. / 朱麗双. / 呈交日期: 2006年10月. / 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007. / 參考文獻(p. 350-366)及索引. / Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 10 yue. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-09, Section: A, page: 3907. / Electronic reproduction. Flirting with the unsayable? : a discours social perspective of der Fall Jenninger

Déraps, Jean. January 1997 (has links)
On November 10, 1988, Philipp Jenninger, President of the German Bundestag (FRG), held a speech in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of Reichskristallnacht, or 'night of broken glass', a pogrom which was orchestrated by the National Socialist government against Germany's Jewish citizens. The speech proved to be extremely controversial and provoked heated reactions in Germany and around the world. / The following is an analysis of the discourse generated by the speech in Germany. The goal of my project is to elucidate the discursive structures that subtended the state of the German discours social in order to show the way in which the 'text' of Der Fall Jenninger was formed and informed by it. / The first part of the thesis shall serve as an introduction to the incident of Der Fall Jenninger. Part two will outline the precepts upon which I will be basing my analysis. Part three will consist of my analysis of Der Fall Jenninger.

Cuando vino la mexicanada: authority, race, and conflict in West Texas, 1895-1924 / Authority, race, and conflict in West Texas, 1895-1924

Levario, Miguel Antonio, 1977- 28 August 2008 (has links)
This dissertation proposes to explain how militarization during the turn of the twentieth century affected relations in the transnational West Texas region between Mexicans and Anglos and between the United States and Mexico. The study seeks to demonstrate that militarization complicated these relations and deepened racial and international divisions. Within this discussion, the study will also demonstrate that the "border troubles" of the early twentieth century gave shape to an authority structure that was composed of border institutions that sought to pacify the region with ever-increasing vigilance and punitive measures. The result of such measures was a disciplined society that reinforced racial segregation in towns and cities along the border, specifically El Paso. A case study approach is utilized to highlight specific events, institutions and public figures that contributed to the formation of authority in El Paso. They include the National Guard, the 1916 El Paso race riot, the Texas Rangers, and the Border Patrol. The affects of developing authority and their institutions on race relations along the U.S.-Mexican divide are addressed. Historians have discussed various aspects of the history of immigration, race, and labor in the border region. However, they have given little attention to militarization and the emergence of authority in the integration of Mexicans and Mexican Americans into American society in the border region. Militarization of the U.S.-Mexican border between 1890 and 1924 contributed to the definition of racial and ethnic relations. This study examines the history of the West Texas region while focusing on the changing relationship between the Mexican-origin community and larger society. The general intent is to demonstrate that the militarization of the region complicated relations at the same time that it established institutions that defined the new political structure in the border region. The dissertation also studies how the history of Mexican Americans was tied to the special relations between the communities along the border. This transnational relationship serves as a vantage point from which to study national and regional histories and an emphasis on race allows this study to explain the extent to which militarization affected social relations in the border region.

Turkish nation-building process : an analysis of language, education, and citizenship policies during the early Republic (1920-1938)

Bayar, Yesim. January 2008 (has links)
This study seeks to analyze the Turkish nation-building process during the early Republican period (1920-1938). In doing this, the substantive focus will be on three main dimensions --language, education, and citizenship -- with particular emphasis on the rhetoric and actions of the political elite. / By looking at language, education, and citizenship policies, and their formulations, the present analysis will make three main propositions: First, and in contrast to the existing literature on nations and nation-building, it will be demonstrated that the process of Turkish nation-building was neither a smooth nor an automatic process. Moreover, during the period under analysis, there were competing definitions of nationhood which were taken up, and discussed by the political elite. The final conceptualization of nationhood --which took an assimilationist form with an ethnic understanding attached to it -- was formed over time. At times, the process was wrought with tensions as illustrated by the heated debates among the political elite. / Second, the present analysis will seek to bring together two different ways of looking at nation formation. More specifically, the analysis will attempt to bridge the gap between those works which only underline the role of ideas in the formation of nations, and those which emphasize the role of structural forces. By paying attention to the "voices" (and actions) of the political elite, this study will demonstrate that it is not only ideas, nor is it only structural forces that matter. Rather, the crystallization of the contents of Turkish nationhood illustrates the interplay of ideological as well as geopolitical and political forces. / Third, a detailed analysis of the trajectory of Turkish nation-building and the formulation of Turkish nationhood reveals the complexity of this process. The existing literature on Turkey tends to treat the Kemalist era as an undifferentiated whole. The present work will remain critical to such an outlook. Instead, and by looking at the shifting conceptualizations of nationhood, it will seek to demonstrate the complexity and contingent nature of the Turkish nation-building process.

Dungeon memories: Black African's experience of racism in Berlin today

Mapani, Paul Simandala 11 1900 (has links)
This study explores black African migrants' experience of racism in Berlin, today. Its vantage point is that of a missiological discipline. Since racism is a very complex phenomenon, both in the church and society; the study therefore, adopted a multidisciplinary approach. This helps us to better understand the different theoretical nuances, which inform racism as an ideology and, as a social construct. Against this backdrop, the study engaged the “pastoral cycle” (cycle of missionary praxis) by Holland and Henriot and developed by Cochrane et al as its theological framework. The research methodology consisted of data collection, interpreting and analyzing (comparing and contrasting primary sources in light of data collected). Personal narratives of research participants' experience of racism in a semi-structured format, formed part of the methodology, in establishing ecclesiastical, political, social and structural climate on how they contribute to the way that black African migrants experience racism in Berlin, today. Two forms of data collection were employed: Qualitative interview and observation instruments. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Theology)
