Effects of Simulation on Senior Nursing Students? Patient Safety Competence| A Quantitative StudyHeatlie, Jeanne M. 10 December 2015 (has links)

The problem addressed in this study was the need for evidence-based teaching strategies that prepare nursing students to enter practice at graduation with the competencies to provide safe patient care. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the addition of a patient safety focused human patient simulation (PS-HPS) learning activity during the final senior semester of a nursing program in southeast Michigan changes students’ perceptions of patient safety competence learning. For the pre-test post-test quasi-experimental study, a convenience sample of 48 undergraduate senior nursing students who engaged in the simulation was compared to 50 senior nursing students from the previous semester that did not receive the intervention. The Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSS) was administered to both groups of nursing students during the second week of the final semester of a baccalaureate nursing program and again at the end of the semester. For the first research question, the ANCOVA test determined that there was no significant difference in post-test classroom learning scores between the comparison and treatment groups, controlling for pre-test classroom learning H-PEPSS scores, F (1, 95) = .000, p = .983, partial eta squared = .000. For the second research question, the ANCOVA test determined that there was no significant difference in post-test clinical learning H-PEPSS scores between the comparison and treatment groups, controlling for pre-test clinical learning scores, F (1, 95) = .496, p = .483, partial eta squared = .005. Implications for nursing education practice include: (a) simulation learning may not be more effective than traditional classroom learning strategies and (b) educators should continue to explore both classroom and clinical teaching strategies to advance students’ patient safety competence learning. One recommendation is to replicate the study with other nursing students from different locations. Secondly, the simulation scenario presented in this study could be modified by other instructors to effectively facilitate students’ patient safety learning. Additionally, a mixed methods research design may yield student responses that better reflects student learning within simulation. The proposed study adds to the nursing educational research about the effectiveness of simulation for students’ patient safety competence learning.

Usability Evaluation Of Mobile Information And Communications Technology In Health CareAkbasoglu, Beyza 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Technology plays an increasingly important role in modern health care. This thesis presents an approach to usability evaluation of mobile information and communications technologies designed for diabetes patients&rsquo / use in their daily lives. According to our study conducted on 60 diabetes patients, several important findings were obtained. Fifty nine (98.3%) diabetes patients were highly satisfied with the mobile health technology and expressed that they would use it, and found the measured values reliable. For 57 (95%) diabetes patients / measuring, checking and accessing the blood glucose level easily anytime and anywhere were very important. Fifty six (93.3%) said that they would wish to send their blood glucose levels to their physicians via e-mail. When participants were asked to provide a decision on future health care, predominate number of participants said they would change their lifestyle rather than visit a doctor regardless of their blood glucose level. In conclusion, little is known about such effects of mobile information and communications technologies in self-management care situations. It is clear that usability studies in the field are more difficult to conduct than laboratory evaluations. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to further evaluate these initial findings.

AvaliaÃÃo das necessidades identificadas pelos cirurgiÃes-dentistas da atenÃÃo bÃsica para o cumprimento dos indicadores em saÃde bucal no municÃpio de Fortaleza, Cearà / Assessment of needs identified by dentists of primary care to the fulfillment of indicators in oral health in the city of Fortaleza, CearÃFrancisco Ivan Rodrigues Mendes JÃnior 05 May 2014 (has links)
This study had an exploratory and descriptive nature, with qualitative and quantitative approach, which sought to assess the needs identified by dentists of primary care to the fulfillment of indicators in oral health from the Program of Improvement of Access and Quality â Basic Atention of Fortaleza City, Cearà State. It was used a questionnaire containing 37 queries, with 23 closed questions and 14 semi-structured questions. The results were derived from questionnaires administered to 137 (one hundred and thirty seven) dentists from the Primary Care in Fortaleza, found in six (06) Health Regions during meetings of permanent education sponsored by municipal management. This quantitative of dentists corresponded to 70,25% of a population of 195 (one hundred and ninety-five) dentists registered in Oral Health Teams until October, 2013. The lack of motivation, the discontinuity in providing dentistry supplies, the insecurity in the clinical management of the professional related to dental prothesis, dental urgencies and diagnosis of oral mucosal changes of users were the main problems identified which interfere at the fulfillment of most of these indicators. Given the above findings, it was observed the need to invest in permanent education process, involvement of professionals in the process of planning and organization of the services, improvements in working conditions, regular deliveries of dentistry supplies, acquisition of instrumental and improvements in relations work, especially in humanization, promoting the appreciation and recognition of professional inserted therein, so that we can generate their greatest satisfaction.

EVALUATION OF INTEGRATED HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS (iHIS): A GENERAL APPROACH WITH APPLICABILITY FOR THE CARIBBEAN REGIONClementson, Collette 08 December 2011 (has links)
The countries within the Caribbean region are pursuing the development of national
integrated health information systems (iHIS). The model of the Belize Health Information
System (BHIS) is referenced as the implementation guide. There are no established
standards to facilitate independent evaluation of these types of systems. This study
utilizes existing knowledge to determine the common approaches for evaluating health
information systems (HIS) and applies these findings to formulate an evaluation approach
for these regional systems. This approach is intended to strengthen the regional capacity
for evaluating national iHISs by examining the contextual factors and providing an
evaluation tool, CHEATS+, for systems lifecycle evaluation.
