An evaluation of coaching from a psychological perspective

In spite of the increasing popularity of coaching, little is known about what contributes to an effective coaching experience, particularly from a psychological perspective (Kilburg, 2001; Grant, 2001; Bluckert, 2005; Bowles and Picano, 2007). This study presents a longitudinal, case study of a coaching programme conducted in a large government agency, over a twelve month period. The study adopts the coachee perspective, commenting also on the role of the coach. Longitudinal studies using a mixed methodological approach are rare within coaching research (Feldman and Lankau, 2005). The principal aim of the study is to explore coaching effectiveness from a psychological perspective. Three key areas of research are explored: meta-cognition, interpersonal communication style and attitude. These are areas which have been highlighted as being important for coaching success (Grant, 2001; London and Smither, 2002; Bush, 2004; Feldman and Lankau, 2005; Kappenberg, 2008). The three coaching outcome measures used include; job performance, organisational commitment and organisational citizenship behaviour, which are thought to be useful indicators of organisational success (Meyer et al, 2002; Smith et al, 2003; Maharaji and Schlechter, 2007; Sarantinos, 2007; Van Vuuren, de Jong, Seydel, 2007). The key findings of this study provide some important evidence about those factors which influence coaching effectiveness. This empirical evidence enhances our understanding about how effects occur; identifying those groups of individuals more likely to be influenced by coaching. As anticipated results show that coaching has a positive impact on two of the meta-cognitive skills explored: self-efficacy and self-esteem (Bandura, 1997; Audia, Locke and Smith, 2000; Bouffard-Bouchard, 2001). However, findings also reveal two unexpected outcomes for meta-cognition: an increase in external locus of control, and a decrease in private self-consciousness behaviour. Additionally, results also show that interpersonal communication style and attitude of the coachee are important within the coaching relationship, and that the interpersonal communication style of the coach plays an important role in influencing coaching outcomes. The evidence provided by this study makes a recommendation for pre-coaching assessments of meta-cognitive skills, interpersonal communication and attitude of the coachee and also the interpersonal communication skills of the coach. This type of assessment provides a useful indicator of those areas which are likely to make a difference to coaching effectiveness as highlighted within this study.

Pharmacoeconomic evaluation in Egypt and its role in the medicine reimbursement

Magister Scientiae - MSc (Pharmacy Administration and Policy Regulation) / Aim: The purpose of this research was to assess the validity of pharmacoeconomic evaluation in Egypt three years after the guideline was issued and analyse challenges and opportunities for improvement. Objectives: To conduct a literature review of pricing, medicine reimbursement, and pharmacoeconomic evaluation. Examine, in conjunction with relevant stakeholders, the progress of the pharmacoeconomic evaluation. To present examples of pharmacoeconomic evaluation deployment. To propose recommendations on how to optimize the pharmacoeconomic implementation. Methods: A literature review and a qualitative research method that was conducted using a semi-structured interview with stakeholders of the reimbursement process in Egypt. In addition, examples were analysed to determine the impact of pharmacoeconomic methods on medicine reimbursement in Egypt. Results: The Egyptian Pharmacoeconomic Evaluation Unit was established in 2013, it supports various reimbursement decisions, especially for new technologies. The unit evaluations depended mainly on the available international data. However, fragmentation of the health care system in Egypt is a major obstacle to progress. The guidelines are still non-compulsory for implementation, and accordingly some reimbursement committees do not consider its evaluation in its decision making. Conclusion and Recommendations: The pharmacoeconomic evaluation has demonstrated a good start in Egypt. To gain the full benefit of pharmacoeconomic evaluation, authorities need to consider reducing the complexity of health care system, setting clear strategies, building capabilities to improve pharmacoeconomic awareness; endorsing risk sharing strategy and building a proper health related information system along with creation of full Health Technology Assessment program. The above-mentioned recommendations could be associated together under the Universal Health Coverage road map that Egypt committed to achieve by 2030.

Magistro baigiamajame darbe nagrinėjamas trijų Radviliškio rajono ūkininkų ūkių veiklos ekonominis efektyvumas. Pirmojoje darbo dalyje aptariami lietuvių ir užsienio autorių nagrinėjami teoriniai ekonominio efektyvumo sampratos aspektai. Antrojoje darbo dalyje atliekama ūkių finansinių rodiklių analizė, įvertinama ūkių finansinė būklė. Atliekama trijų ūkių rodiklių lyginamoji analizė, bei palyginimas su šakos rodikliais. Trečiojoje darbo dalyje, jau apskaičiuotų santykinių rodiklių pagrindu, skaičiuojamas integruotas veiklos ekonominio efektyvumo indeksas, kuris leidžia įvertinti kiekvieno ūkio efektyvumo lygį, lyginant tarpusavyje bei su šakos rodikliais. Taip pat įvertinami efektyvumo indekso ir efektyvumą įtakojančių išorinės aplinkos veiksnių ryšiai. Siekiant įvertinti ūkių veiklos perspektyvas, atliekamas bankroto tikimybės prognozavimas. Atlikto tyrimo rezultatų pagrindu parengiama žemės ūkio subjektų ekonominio veiklos efektyvumo vertinimo schema. / Master's work examined the three farms Radviliskis economic efficiency. The first part discusses the Lithuanian and foreign authors examined the theoretical aspects of the concept of economic efficiency. The second part of the farm financial analysis of the indicators, assess the financial position of households. It also carried out in three farms in benchmarking analysis and comparison with industry indicators. The third part is already calculated based on ratios calculated on the cost-effectiveness of integrated performance index, which allow each farm to assess the degree of efficiency when compared with each other and with industry indicators. It also assessed the efficiency index and efficiency of external environmental factors affecting communication. In order to assess the prospects for farm activity carried out by the bankruptcy prediction. Econometric methods for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of health care interventions using observational data

This thesis explores the use of observational microdata in cost-effectiveness analysis. The application of econometric methods adjusting for selection bias is first reviewed and critically appraised in the economic evaluation literature using a structured template. Limitations of identified studies include lack of good quality evidence regarding the performance of different analytical approaches; inadequate assessment of the sensitivity of their results to violations of fundamental assumptions or variations to crucial estimator parameters; failure to combine the cost and effectiveness outcomes in a summary measure; and no consideration of stochastic uncertainty for the purpose of evaluating cost-effectiveness. Data from the Birthplace national cohort study are used in an attempt to address these limitations in the context of an empirical comparison of estimators relying on regression, matching, as well as the propensity score. It is argued that although these methods cannot address the potential impact of unobservable confounding, a novel approach to bias-corrected matching, combining entropy balancing with seemingly unrelated regression, still has the potential to offer important advantages in terms of analytical robustness. The net economic benefit is proposed as a straightforward way to exploit the strengths of rigorous econometric methodology in the development of reliable and informative cost-effectiveness analyses.

Objective: To evaluate trends in the use of antipsychotic drugs in Lithuania between 2003 and 2005 years. Methods: The data on total sales of antipsychotic drugs in all Lithuanian regions over three years (2003-2005) were obtained from IMS Health Inc. Drugs were classified according to the Anatomic Therapeutic Chemical system and use was quantified in terms of defined daily doses. Meta-analysis of observational studies retrieved through systematic search of all available electronic data sources. 1651 abstracts were found and checked. 76 randomised double-blind studies were identified for the met-analysis. Data were calculated by DDD methodology and expressed in DDDs per 1.000 inhabitants per day. The pharmacoeconomic analysis of antipsychotics was performed by cost minimization and reference price methodology. Results: In Lithuania the total antipsychotics consumption increased by 16% over three years (2003-2005) period reaching the value of 5,5 DDD/1000 inhabitants/day. Since 2003 the proportion of use of conventional antipsychotics has increased by 2%, while the use of atypical antipsychotics has increased by 14%. The expenditures of antipsychotics has reached 39 mln Litas (in 2005), of which 48% was costs for atypical antipsychotic agents. Setting the reference price of risperidone (according to the meta-analysis results of effectiveness) for atypical antipsychotics it would be possible to rationalize schizophrenia treatment using 10,68 mln Litas extra money. Avaliação de uma tecnologia social de capacitação profissional para intervenção psicológica com crianças e adolescentes vítimas de abuso sexual

O presente estudo avaliou a efetividade de uma tecnologia social de capacitação profissional em um modelo de grupoterapia cognitivo-comportamental voltado a psicólogos que trabalham com o atendimento clínico de crianças e adolescentes vítimas de abuso sexual. O Estudo I avaliou o impacto da capacitação profissional nos índices de esgotamento emocional (burnout) e de tensão ocupacional (job strain) dos participantes, bem como o impacto no trabalho. Participaram 30 psicólogos que trabalham em instituições públicas do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Do total da amostra, 19 compuseram o grupo experimental (G1, formado por participantes da capacitação profissional) e 11 compuseram o grupo de comparação (G2, formado por não-participantes da capacitação profissional). Os instrumentos utilizados foram o Job Content Questionnaire; o Maslach Burnout Inventory, a Escala de Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho e uma ficha de dados biosociodemográficos. Para G1, foi observado um elevado índice de impacto no trabalho. Referente aos índices de burnout, a exaustão emocional e a baixa-realização no trabalho mantiveram-se estáveis entre T1 e T2, enquanto a despersonalização diminuiu. Para G2, todos os indicadores de burnout aumentaram significativamente. Em relação aos níveis de tensão ocupacional, a demanda de trabalho aumentou para G1, enquanto que se manteve estável para G2. Já os níveis de ‘controle no trabalho’ mantiveram-se estáveis para G1, enquanto houve diminuição significativa para G2, sobretudo devido à diminuição dos índices da variável ‘uso de habilidades’. O Estudo II objetivou avaliar o processo da capacitação profissional, visando a observar as potencialidades e limitações do programa oferecido. A amostra foi composta por 28 psicólogos participantes da tecnologia social de capacitação profissional. Os participantes responderam a um questionário de dados biossociodemográficos e a fichas de avaliação da capacitação, ao final de cada encontro. Os resultados obtidos mediante a ficha de avaliação apresentaram um nível elevado de satisfação com o programa de capacitação profissional oferecido. Sugestões e comentários adicionais, bem como opiniões sobre os aspectos mais positivos e mais negativos do curso forneceram subsídios para melhoramentos em edições futuras. Os resultados dos dois estudos sugerem que a Tecnologia Social de Capacitação Profissional é um recurso importante para a formação teorico-prática, bem como para o bem-estar no trabalho dos profissionais que lidam com a demanda do abuso sexual infanto-juvenil no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. / This study evaluated the effectiveness of a social technology of professional training in a cognitive-behavioral group-therapy model, addressed to clinical psychologists who treat children victims of sexual abuse. The Strategic Prevention Framework: Effectiveness of Substance Abuse Prevention System

The strategic prevention framework (SPF) is a data-driven operating system to assist designing evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs. The study performed here was to assess the effectiveness of the SPF as a prevention planning system. One purpose of this study was to determine the implementation fidelity of the programs that used the SPF process; the other purpose was to assess effectiveness of the SPF process. This study utilized a set of data collected by the national cross site evaluation team on all jurisdictions that implemented the SPF. A subset of communities collected and reported at least 2 pre-implementation and at least 2 post implementation outcomes data. The minimum sample size for the study was determined by using Cohen's d criteria. The assessments were performed using both qualitative and quantitative methods by using data collected from multiple levels with a quasi-experimental design. The qualitative data were analyzed using qualitative software with key word searches to examine implementation processes, and the quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential methods such as Student t tests to examine and compare outcomes. Results show that the communities in the study implemented the SPF process with fidelity and that there were changes in desired directions. Factors related to improvements include sufficient internal resources and monitoring follow-through. This research has important implications for social change since substance abuse is a major social issue that has consequences across life span. Recent studies have shown that many behavioral problems have similar risk factors and that improvements for some behavioral problems will most likely have beneficial effects on other related problems.
