ESL teacher profiles of ICT integration in their classroom practices and assessment activities : a portrait viewed through the lens of some Quebec teachers’ social representations

Hammami, Abdelhakim January 2016 (has links)
Abstract : Information and communication technologies (ICTs, henceforth) have become ubiquitous in our society. The plethora of devices competing with the computer, from iPads to the Interactive whiteboard, just to name a few, has provided teachers and students alike with the ability to communicate and access information with unprecedented accessibility and speed. It is only logical that schools reflect these changes given that their purpose is to prepare students for the future. Surprisingly enough, research indicates that ICT integration into teaching activities is still marginal. Many elementary and secondary schoolteachers are not making effective use of ICTs in their teaching activities as well as in their assessment practices. The purpose of the current study is a) to describe Quebec ESL teachers’ profiles of using ICTs in their daily teaching activities; b) to describe teachers’ ICT integration and assessment practices; and c) to describe teachers’ social representations regarding the utility and relevance of ICT use in their daily teaching activities and assessment practices. In order to attain our objectives, we based our theoretical framework, principally, on the social representations (SR, henceforth) theory and we defined most related constructs which were deemed fundamental to the current thesis. We also collected data from 28 ESL elementary and secondary school teachers working in public and private sectors. The interview guide used to that end included a range of items to elicit teachers’ SR in terms of ICT daily use in teaching activities as well as in assessment practices. In addition, we carried out our data analyses from a textual statistics perspective, a particular mode of content analysis, in order to extract the indicators underlying teachers’ representations of the teachers. The findings suggest that although almost all participants use a wide range of ICT tools in their practices, ICT implementation is seemingly not exploited to its fullest potential and, correspondingly, is likely to produce limited effects on students’ learning. Moreover, none of the interviewees claim that they use ICTs in their assessment practices and they still hold to the traditional paper-based assessment (PBA, henceforth) approach of assessing students’ learning. Teachers’ common discourse reveals a gap between the positive standpoint with regards to ICT integration, on the one hand, and the actual uses of instructional technology, on the other. These results are useful for better understanding the way ESL teachers in Quebec currently view their use of ICTs, particularly for evaluation purposes. In fact, they provide a starting place for reconsidering the implementation of ICTs in elementary and secondary schools. They may also be useful to open up avenues for the development of a future research program in this regard.

They're Natural and Everywhere: How Evaluative Practices Permeate the Organization

Maier, Florentine, Brandl, Julia 05 1900 (has links) (PDF)
How do evaluative practices become natural and ubiquitous in an organization? In this paper we integrate findings from previous empirical work on the adoption of evaluative practices in organizations with insights from institutional theory and social psychology research for advancing the understanding of possible states of evaluative practices within organizations and the processes through which organizations become permeated by evaluative practices. Our conceptual model suggests that once evaluative practices have gained a foothold in an organization, they tend to be applied to an increasing number of organiza-tional problems and become taken for granted.

Evaluative Practice adopted in the Scene of the and Adults and Youth Education in Public Schools of Fortaleza: factor for its inclusion schoolar?

The present research aims to supply theoretical subsidies for reflection in the field of the educational evaluation facing the practices adopted in the education of youth and adults in the initial series of basic education and if these benefit or not the exercise of the education right, focused on the permanence aspect, access and scholar inclusion of the pupil. So, the âweavingâ was disclosed in this essay among the historical conceptions of the evaluation in the scene of youth and adults education, of the individual and social subjectivity that supports the schooling culture formation, through its speech, dialog aspect, social relations and evaluation concerning the adopted pedagogic practice in YAE. The topic might be translated into the following question: the evaluative practice adopted in the scene of the and Adults and Youth Education in Public Schools of Fortaleza suggests the permanence process of the pupil in the school, corroborates for its inclusion in the heart of society and then, in the exercise of education right? The work is based on bibliographical, documental and realistic experiments research. Through the experiments, we tried to adopt, as instrumentals, the commonly applied survey to ten percent of the MUNICIPAL public school teachers and the focused group, applying with 06 students from Regional VI schools, where we tried to point the âmodus operandiâ of the evaluative practice concerning the possibility of compliance of the social role of including the pupil in the school and in the society.Th e act of digging and searching the thematic of the evaluation as a pedagogical practice in Youth and Adult Education allows the problem to occupy a significant epistemologic space, mainly when we refer to the several variable aspects that cross the work developed by the teacher in the construction of a humanized evaluative practice. After an excursion on the designated conceptions, we can announce it as one of the main final considerations, which the act of evaluating is tied to the formation of the internalized âhabitusâ culturally.

The choice of the theme is justified as we consider necessary to uncover and minimize the dominant speech about the depreciation of knowledge and practices of teachers. This is a descriptive research, a case study where we approach the Physical Education teachers from municipal schools of Pelotas RS, which are inserted in the project of implementation of a 9-year-long teaching in basic education. The tool used for this collection of information was a semi-structured interview, which was recorded, transcribed, and afterwards, interpreted through the analysis of content. During the literature review, we signed: the importance of the knowledge produced by each teacher, the knowledge about the habitus of each agent that lives in a social space; the abilities of the PE teachers who act in the schools, among them, in special, the ability of evaluate; and the knowledge about the cycles or stages of each stage lived by the teachers inside their careers, understanding the characterization of the teaching trajectory in lifecycles and/or professional development. For the data analysis, categories that discuss the construction of knowledge about the evaluation practices in the teachers career were extracted. We can conclude that teachers build their knowledge along with their professional course, gradually attaching this knowledge to their pedagogical action, through the mobilization of it. The research was held with docents actuating in the following areas: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Education, Biological Sciences and Pedagogy, and it was assumed that their evaluative practices would positively influence the students future performance on such pedagogical aspect. The instruments for data collection consisted on a questionnaire and further interviews. It was a questionnaire with closed questions, in a total of 25, based on statements registered on other researches on evaluation applied to the docents of the institution. The answers in the questionnaires were used to elect the docents to be interviewed. The open-ended interviews with the six elected allowed the expression of profound thoughts on the issues investigated: 1. Why evaluating? 2. What is to be evaluated? 3. How to evaluate? The answers were then submitted to the analysis of contents. The theoretical references were concentrated the authors: Luckesi, Prado de Souza, Perreunoud, Hadji and Afonso Janela. It was evidenced that the practices developed by the interviewed has a formative role, being used to detect the students difficulties, raising information and enhancing the educational process. It was also possible to identify that they apply diverse evaluative instruments and procedures, aiming at integrating the evaluative and the teaching-learning processes. The results suggest that the didacticadministrative organization in the institution favors the development of differentiated evaluative practices. This study represented a means to reflect more about the evaluative procedures to be used by future professors actuating within the elementary education, constructing or not differentiated and proficient practices / Na presente tese objetivou-se investigar as concepções avaliativas dos professores que atuam nos cursos de licenciatura.
