Multiband Hybrid Internal Antennas for Mobile Phones

In this dissertation, a series of multiband hybrid mobile phone antennas, incorporating the electric-current and equivalent magnetic-current excitation mechanisms are presented. The design concept of the hybrid antenna is that the multiband operation is achieved by incorporating the resonant modes generated by the two above-mentioned excitation mechanisms. In the first and the second antenna designs, they are obtained by stacking the antennas using the electric-current and equivalent magnetic-current excitations, and both can achieve multiband operations. For the last two antenna designs, the two different excitation mechanisms can be incorporated on a single metal plate or dielectric substrate. This kind of hybrid are promising for application in bar-type and folder-type mobile phones. Besides, in order to pass some required testing criterions and analyze the environmental effects, the hybrid penta-band mobile phone antenna applied in bar-type and folder-type mobile phones is analyzed. The main topics include the speaker¡¦s effects on the antenna¡¦s performances, the analysis of user¡¦s hand and head effects, and the analysis of the hearing aid compatibility.

Numerical Investigation of the Aerodynamic Vibration Excitation of High-Pressure Turbine Rotors

The design parameters axial gap and stator count of highpressure turbine stages are evaluated numerically towards theirinfluence on the unsteady aerodynamic excitation of rotorblades. Of particular interest is if and how unsteadyaerodynamic considerations in the design could reduce the riskofhigh cycle fatigue (HCF) failures of the turbine rotor. A well-documented 2D/Q3D non-linear unsteady code (UNSFLO)is chosen to perform the stage flow analyses. The evaluatedresults are interpreted as aerodynamic excitation mechanisms onstream sheets neglecting 3D effects. Mesh studies andvalidations against measurements and 3D computations provideconfidence in the unsteady results. Three test cases areanalysed. First, a typical aero-engine high pressure turbinestage is studied at subsonic and transonic flow conditions,with four axial gaps (37% - 52% of cax,rotor) and two statorconfigurations (43 and 70 NGV). Operating conditions areaccording to the resonant conditions of the blades used inaccompanied experiments. Second, a subsonic high pressureturbine intended to drive the turbopump of a rocket engine isinvestigated. Four axial gap variations (10% - 29% ofcax,rotor) and three stator geometry variations are analysed toextend and generalise the findings made on the first study.Third, a transonic low pressure turbine rotor, known as theInternational Standard Configuration 11, has been modelled tocompute the unsteady flow due to blade vibration and comparedto available experimental data. Excitation mechanisms due to shock, potential waves andwakes are described and related to the work found in the openliterature. The strength of shock excitation leads to increasedpressure excitation levels by a factor 2 to 3 compared tosubsonic cases. Potential excitations are of a typical wavetype in all cases, differences in the propagation direction ofthe waves and the wave reflection pattern in the rotor passagelead to modifications in the time and space resolved unsteadypressures on the blade surface. The significant influence ofoperating conditions, axial gap and stator size on the wavepropagation is discussed on chosen cases. The wake influence onthe rotorblade unsteady pressure is small in the presentevaluations, which is explicitly demonstrated on the turbopumpturbine by a parametric study of wake and potentialexcitations. A reduction in stator size (towards R≈1)reduces the potential excitation part so that wake andpotential excitation approach in their magnitude. Potentials to reduce the risk of HCF excitation in transonicflow are the decrease of stator exit Mach number and themodification of temporal relations between shock and potentialexcitation events. A similar temporal tuning of wake excitationto shock excitation appears not efficient because of the smallwake excitation contribution. The increase of axial gap doesnot necessarily decrease the shock excitation strength neitherdoes the decrease of vane size because the shock excitation mayremain strong even behind a smaller stator. Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy with the Scanning Tunneling Microscope : a combined theory-experiment approach / La Spectroscopie par Effet Tunnel Inélastique avec un Microscope à Effet Tunnel : une approche combinée de la théorie et de l'expérience

La Spectroscopie par Effet Tunnel Inélastique (IETS) avec un Microscope à Effet Tunnel (STM) est une nouvelle technique de spectroscopie vibrationnelle, qui permet de caractériser des propriétés très fines de molécules adsorbées sur des surfaces métalliques. Des règles de selection d’excitation vibrationnelle basées sur la symétrie ont été proposées, cependant, elles ne semblent pas exhaustives pour expliquer la totalité du mécanisme et des facteurs en jeu; elles ne sont pas directement transposables pour les propriétés d'un adsorbat et sont lourdes d'utilisation. Le but de cette thèse est donc d'améliorer ces règles de selection par une étude théorique. Un protocole de simulation de l'IETS a été développé, paramétré, et évalué, puis appliqué pour calculer des spectres IETS pour différentes petites molécules, qui sont systématiquement liées, sur une surface de cuivre. Des principes additifs de l'IETS ont été developpés, notamment concernant l’extension dans le vide de l’état de tunnel, l'activation/ quench sélectif de certains modes du aux propriétés électroniques de certains fragments moléculaires, et l'application de certaines règles d'addition de signaux IETS. De plus, des empreintes vibrationnelles par des signaux IETS ont été determinées pour permettre de différentier entre les orientations des adsorbats, la nature chimique des atomes et les isomères de structures. Une stratégie simple utilisant les propriétés de distribution de la densité électronique de la molécule isolée pour prédire les activités IETS sans des couts importants de calculs a aussi été développée. Cette expertise a été utilisée pour rationaliser et interpréter les mesures expérimentales des spectres IETS pour des métalloporphyrines et métallophtalocyanines adsorbées. Ces études sont les premières études IETS pour des molécules aussi larges et complexes. L'approche expérimentale a permis de déterminer les limitations actuelles des simulations IETS. Les défauts associés à l'identification ont été résolus en faisant des simulations d'images STM complémentaires. / Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy (IETS) with the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is a novel vibrational spectroscopy technique that permits to characterize very subtle properties of molecules adsorbed on metallic surfaces. Its proposed symmetry-based propensity selection rules, however, fail to fully capture its exact mechanism and influencing factors; are not directly retraceable to an adsorbate property and are cumbersome. In this thesis, a theoretical approach was taken to improve them. An IETS simulation protocol has been developed, parameterized and benchmarked, and consequently used to calculate IETS spectra for a set of systematically related small molecules on copper surfaces. Extending IETS principles were deduced that refer to the tunneling state’s vacuum extension, the selective activating/quenching of certain types of modes due to the moieties’ electronic properties, and the applicability of a sum rule of IETS signals. Also, fingerprinting IETS-signals that enable discrimination between adsorbate orientations, the chemical nature of atoms and structural isomers were determined and a strategy using straightforward electronic density distribution properties of the isolated molecule to predict IETS activity without (large) computational cost was developed. This expertise was used to rationalize and interpret experimentally measured IETS spectra for adsorbed metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines, being the first IETS studies of this large size. This experimental approach permitted to determine the current limitations of IETS-simulations. The associated identification shortcomings were resolved by conducting complementary STM-image simulations.
