A pilot study to examine a therapeutic exercise intervention on fibromyalgia symptomsNelson, Mara Hendricks 21 March 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Objective. To examine the feasibility of a home-based, video therapeutic exercise program on pain, fatigue, self-efficacy, and health status in fibromyalgia patients. Methods. Nine individuals who were previously diagnosed with fibromyalgia completed the study (out of an initial pool of 31). Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups: a group who received a home-based therapeutic exercise video and a control group who continued to undergo their current standard of care or "treatment-as-usual." The video group was instructed to conduct the exercises as prescribed in the 42-minute video at least 3 times per week for 4 weeks. The treatment-as-usual control group was instructed to continue to undergo their current standard-of-care and to not begin any new treatments during that time. Instruments measuring self-efficacy, pain, fatigue, self-rated health status and health distress were administered at baseline and 4 weeks. Results. None of the variables analyzed showed a significant change between the treatment and control groups over the course of the 4-week study. Conclusion. This study was not sufficiently powered to detect differences between the two groups. However, several of the treatment group participants subjectively indicated that they found the exercises to be helpful in the management of their fibromyalgia symptoms and the program did not exacerbate any of their symptoms. With this information, it appears that patients are able to tolerate the treatment and are able to complete the outcome measures. Between-group clinical outcomes will now need to be assessed in a larger clinical trial.

The effects of exercise intensity and duration on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) were examined. Eight males exercised in a thermoneutral environment at 60% of maximal aerobic power (V0₂ₘₐₓ) for 30 min and performed the same total work at 80% and 40% V0₂ₘₐₓ by varying exercise durations. In addition, 2 work bouts were performed at 60% VO₂ₘₐₓ for 90 and 60 min. A standardized meal was consumed 2 h post-exercise. Oxygen consumption (V0₂), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), rectal temperature (Tc) and heart rate
(HR) were monitored on a control day and before, during and for 3 h following exercise. VO₂ was equivalent to control day values within 30 min post-exercise on each of the 5 d and no consistent relation between exercise condition and duration of EPOC was observed. When total post-exercise VO₂ was expressed relative to control values, differences were greatest during the first 30 min post-exercise. Total net caloric expenditure was small (32. 5-57.9 kcal) in all cases. RER tended to remain equivalent to control levels post-exercise, with intermittent elevations. Significant elevations in Tc were obtained until 60 to 150 min post-exercise. No significant exercise-related effects were noted for dietary induced thermogenesis or the cumulative effect of the 5 exercise bouts on resting metabolic rate. Although exercise over a wide range of intensities and durations resulted in a significant EPOC, in all cases it was of short duration and the total 3 h energy expenditure was small. Investigation into Characteristics of Bench Press using PUSH BandPeters, Avery, Sato, Kimitake 01 May 2019 (has links)
Introduction: Sport scientist and strength coaches use resistance training to increase athletic performance and muscle hypertrophy. Improving muscular strength is the most essential task for these scientists, however, how best to identify weakness has yet to be established. The popularity of velocity-based resistance training has recently increased as a method to prescribe resistance training intensity, therefore, the purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics of bench press concentric velocity. It is hypothesized that the velocity output will decrease during the change from the 75% relative load of the 1RM to the 85% relative load of 1RM. It is believed that there will be a greater output of velocity during the 75% set than the 85% set. Methods: Nine female collegiate athletes (18-21 yrs), participated in this study. PUSH™ bands were used to measure barbell velocity during the bench press exercise. Each female was expected to preform 3 sets of 5 repetitions (3x5) at an intensity of 75% and 85% of their 1 repetition maximum (1RM). Only data from repetition 2-4 were used for analysis. Results: The results drawn from data collected supported our hypothesis showing a decrease in velocity among the 85% 1RM test when compared to the 75% 1RM test group. Comparisons were drawn using a t-Test table comprised of PUSH™ Band data. Conclusion: The results supported the hypothesis that this type of technology can identify the load specific velocity to help strength coaches to identify the optimal resistance for certain training program and goals by using collected data with the PUSH™ Band to identify weakness in strength and/or endurance.

PROBLEM: Expanding knowledge of how the brain responds to various exercise types may allow for investigation and development of individualized methods of concussion management.
PURPOSE: Identify differences in cerebral oxygenation recovery following bouts of maximal anaerobic, resistance and aerobic exercise.
METHODS: Twenty-eight active adults were recruited, each partaking in two sessions. At the first, anthropometric measures and leg press 1-RM were determined. During the second session, cerebral oxygenation and ventilatory gas exchange variables were recorded while participants completed maximal anaerobic, resistance, and aerobic tests, and for 15-minutes of recovery.
RESULTS: Anaerobic (637.41s ± 330.42s) and aerobic (689.29s ± 311.05s) exercise resulted in longer durations of time to return to baseline compared to resistance (363.07s ± 366.34s).
CONCLUSION: Anaerobic and aerobic exercise taking longer than resistance to return to baseline indicates prolonged activity. Expecting equivalent outcomes as concussion management tools from differing exercise methods may be misguided and requires additional research. / February 2017

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) currently recommends 1 set of 8 - 12 repetitions as the minimal dose of resistance training (RT) required to achieve the health and fitness benefits gained from RT. Yet, certain benefits derived from resistance training are not mentioned by the ACSM. An increase in basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a possible health benefit derived from RT. However, no previous studies have examined the effect of the ACSM's current resistance training recommendations on BMR. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if this low level of RT could increase BMR in currently active older men. Sixteen subjects were assigned to either a training group or control group for 10 weeks of training. The training group continued their current aerobic activity while adding 1 set of RT 2x/week as recommended by the ACSM. The control group continued their aerobic activity with no modifications. Measurements of strength, fat free mass (FFM), and BMR were made pre- and posttraining. The training group showed an increase in strength (P<0.05) while the control group did not change. The training and control groups showed no change in FFM or BMR (P<0.05). The strength increases reported in the current study were of expected values while FFM and BMR have not been previously examined with this protocol. It was concluded that 10 weeks of RT using 1 set of 8 - 12 repetitions does not increase BMR in currently active older men. / School of Physical Education

Glucoregulatory responses to intermittent high-intensity exercise in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus : insight into the risk of hypoglycaemiaGuelfi, Kym Janese January 2006 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Exercise is generally recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus since it is associated with numerous physiological and psychological benefits. However, participation in exercise can also increase the risk of experiencing severe hypoglycaemia both during exercise and recovery. Unfortunately, existing guidelines to minimise the risk of exercise-induced hypoglycaemia are often general and fail to take into account that different precautions are required for exercise of varying type, duration and intensity. Specifically, there are no evidence-based guidelines for safe participation in intermittent high-intensity exercise (IHE), which characterises the activity patterns of most team and field sports, manual labour occupations and spontaneous play in children. This is because the response of blood glucose levels to this type of exercise is not known. Consequently, the purpose of this thesis was to investigate the glucoregulatory responses to IHE that replicates the high-intensity work-to-recovery ratios observed in intermittent sports in individuals with type 1 diabetes, in order to assess the associated risk of hypoglycaemia. The first study of this thesis examined the effect of the repeated bouts of high-intensity exercise that characterise IHE compared to remaining inactive, on blood glucose and glucoregulatory hormone levels in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Eight healthy individuals with type 1 diabetes were tested on two separate occasions during which either a 20 minute rest (CON) or an IHE protocol designed to simulate the activity patterns of team sports was performed (repeated 4 second sprints every 2 minutes). ... During the second hour of recovery, Ra and Rd returned to baseline following MOD, but remained elevated after IHE. These changes in Ra and Rd were consistent with a lower glucose infusion rate (GIR) during early recovery from IHE and a higher GIR after 2 hours of recovery compared to MOD. In conclusion, the repeated bouts of high-intensity exercise associated with IHE stimulate a more rapid and greater increment in Ra during exercise and attenuate glucose Rd during early recovery. These findings assist in explaining, in part, the previous observation that the risk of hypoglycaemia might be lower during IHE and early recovery compared to MOD. Overall, the findings of this thesis have implications for current recommendations aimed at managing blood glucose levels during and after exercise to avoid hypoglycaemia.
