An approach to the optimisation of partial extractions for use in geochemical explorationDalrymple, Iain , Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
Geochemical exploration for mineral deposits has generally been restricted to regions dominated by residual regolith or where transported regolith cover is thin. A variety of partial geochemical extraction techniques, linked to new predictive models for element migration through transported regolith cover, have demonstrated a potential to detect deeply buried mineralisation under certain circumstances. Problems with the reliability and further development of such partial extractions are linked to the lack of information on either the form of metals or the factors that control the extraction of metals from regolith materials. This study quantitatively examines the mechanisms of a range of partial extraction methods, based on a suite of surface regolith samples from the Mandamah Cu-Au deposit that is covered by 50m of transported regolith. Samples at were subjected to acetate, hydroxylamine.HCI and Na-pyrophosphate extractions at various reagent concentrations, pH values, temperatures and durations, following various sample preparation and chemical pretreatment permutations. The data were modelled, and reaction conditions subsequently optimized, on the basis of central composite designs. Conventional partial extraction (acetate, hydroxylamine and aqua regia) data, displayed high variability for some major and trace metals surrounding the periphery of mineralisation at Mandamah but little indication of direct vertical migration of ore-related metals. The buffered acetate extraction is primarily controlled by the capacity of the solution to generate acid rather than exchange induced by the cation ofthe acetate salt. Trace metals were highly susceptible to readsorption effects. Acidic hydroxylamine extraction is driven by kinetically limited acid hydrolysis and the hydroxylamine concentration has little effect on metal extractability. Alkaline Na-pyrophosphate extraction proved difficult to model. Two new partial extractions developed in this study - alkaline hydroxylamine.HCI and pH-static calcium nitrate - offer a different functionality to conventional extractions and provide more coherent geochemical patterns at Mandamah related to the location of buried mineralisation. These patterns are also related to the capacity of samples to resist pH neutralization. Systematic optimisation of geochemical extraction procedures is demonstrated to be an effective approach to improving detection of geochemical patterns in surface regolith that can be spatially related to the effects of mineralisation on the chemistry and mineralogy of overlying transported regolith cover.

A Comprehensive Architecture for the Cooperative Guidance and Control of Autonomous Ground and Air VehiclesPham, Ngoc Hai January 2007 (has links)
Master of Engineering (Research) / This thesis deals with the problem of cooperative explorations of a group of autonomous vehicles in unknown environments in the context of decentralized behaviour. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of a comprehensive decentralized cooperative exploration frame work in which each individual vehicle has the ability to explore an unknown environment by itself and also by cooperative behaviour in a team of several vehicles. To simulate the whole system, each individual vehicle will have the ability to explore an unknown environment by dynamically path-planning (with obstacle and collision avoidance), high-level con- trolling, updating the environment map, proposing potential destinations (frontiers), and solving online task assignment. In this thesis, the framework simulates an unknown environment as an occupancy grid map and uses a frontier-base exploration strategy, in which a cell will be marked as a frontier if it is adjacent at least one open cell, as the core architecture. In dealing with the uncertainties in process transition and observation models of autonomous vehicles, the well-known discrete extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is investigated and implemented. When exploring the environment, a vehicle will update its surrounding information, then propose its potential destinations and evaluate the utility (benefit) to travel to each of those destinations. The benefit to go to each destination is derived from the subtraction of the utility (value) of that cell to the sum of the cost to travel to that cell and the steering cost. The key to cooperative exploration in the team of vehicles lies in each vehicle's ability to communicate the updates of the world to the whole team and to contribute to the global list of potential destinations. And each vehicle has the capability of solving the task assignment problem for the team by calling its own online-task-assignment solving engine. This algorithm results each vehicle in having a destination to visit, which benefits the whole team the most and reduces the total exploration time of the team.

GEOPHYSICAL PROCESSING AND INTERPRETATION WITH GEOLOGIC CONTROLS: EXAMPLES FROM THE BATHURST MINING CAMPTschirhart, Peter 10 1900 (has links)
<p>With an ever-increasing consumption of natural resources new prospecting techniques are required to satisfy the demand. Geophysical methods are one tool commonly relied upon. New acquisition platforms or survey methodologies provide one way to expand the geophysical capabilities, but are expensive and slow to develop. New processing and interpretation techniques on the other hand provide a rapid means to reinterpret existing datasets with the goal of improving our geologic understanding of a project area. This thesis presents four new ways to extract additional geologic insights from a variety of geophysical datasets. All of the studies are based within the Bathurst Mining Camp, NB.</p> <p>A physical rock property database for the Bathurst Mining Camp is constructed and statistically analyzed in chapter two. Descriptive statistics include mean, standard deviation; first, second and third quartiles are calculated for density and magnetic susceptibility measurements and provided in tables for reference. Bivariate plots are then used to identify trends in the density-magnetic susceptibility relationship. We relate some of our findings to processes involved in the depositional and alteration history of the various lithologies. Comprehensive rock property databases provide valuable constraints for geophysical data processing and are essential for any subsequent geophysical modeling. This is demonstrated with two examples. A joint gravity-magnetic profile model is completed across the geologically complex Nine Mile Synform. The profile reveals deep structure in the Camp down to 5 km depth. A geologically constrained geophysical inversion model of the magnetic anomaly associated with the Armstrong B mineral deposit reveals this anomaly contains a strong magnetic remanence contribution. The influence of remanence is often ignored in magnetic interpretation and modeling, but vital to achieve a geologically correct solution. In this instance comparison of the calculated remanence direction with the expected Apparent Polar Wander Path defined direction suggests an age of mineralization that is compatible with geological evidence.</p> <p>A new approach to determine the optimum near surface residual magnetic signal is presented in chapter three. Additionally, a new way of locating remanently magnetized bodies is also introduced. This technique inverts frequency domain helicopter-borne electromagnetic data to yield apparent magnetic susceptibility. To locate those zones where the magnetic signal is dominated by remanence the inverted HFEM susceptibility is cross plot against the results of a traditional apparent susceptibility filter. The inverted HFEM susceptibility is independent of remanence while the apparent susceptibility assumes no remanence. Where remanence is present the TMI derived apparent susceptibility does not correlate with the HFEM. These differences are readily evident in a cross plot of the two susceptibilities. To determine a magnetic residual the inverted susceptibility is forward modeled as a series of vertical prisms with homogeneous susceptibility equal to the inverted susceptibility. This HFEM magnetic model is then used to reference the results of traditional wavelength separation methods. By design the HFEM information is restricted the near surface whereas all traditional regional / residual separation methods operate under wavelength assumptions. A case study using this methodology is presented on the western side of the Tetagouche Antiform.</p> <p>The use of a spatially variable density correction applied to ground gravity and gravity gradiometry in the BMC is examined in the fourth chapter. The influence of topography on gravity and gravity gradiometry measurements is profound and must be removed prior to interpretation. In geologic environments where there is a structural and/or stratigraphic control on the near surface mass distribution, using a single density value may introduce error into the reduced data. A regionally variable density correction is a means to compensate for this effect. Spectral information between the ground gravity and airborne gravity gradiometry is also compared in this chapter. Both systems are fundamentally recording the same geologic mass distribution albeit by different means. Where differences exist one system must be in error.</p> <p>The final chapter demonstrates a quantitative interpretative technique for geophysical data. Often interpretation of the geophysical data in a geological context is done qualitatively using total field and derivative maps. With this approach the resulting map product may reflect the interpreter’s bias. Source edge detection provides a quantitative means to map lateral physical property changes in potential and non-potential field data, but the field data must be transformed prior to SED computation. There are numerous transformation algorithms, all of which operate slightly differently. We demonstrate that by combining the output of several different SED computations through data stacking, the interpretable product of SED is improved. In two examples, a synthetic example and real world example from the Bathurst Mining Camp, a number of transformation algorithms are applied to gridded geophysical datasets and the resulting SED solutions combined. Edge stacking combines the benefits and nuances of each SED algorithm; coincident, or overlapping solutions are considered more indicative of a true edge, while isolated points are taken as being indicative of random noise or false solutions.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

At the age of eighteen, when I was approaching the end of my apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker, I made my first self designed piece of furniture. The master cabinetmaker or the client determined the form of most of the furniture made in our shop, and I seldom liked it. I did not even like the wood we used for the best pieces: walnut. I chose light colored ash for my bed and cupboard, and I made them so they looked good on all sides, with the same wood and the same careful work back and front. I disregarded the usual practice of expanding less time and care on the back because no one ever sees it anyway. At long last I was able to round off the edges only slightly without being corrected, running the sandpaper swiftly and lightly over the edges to soften their sharpness without losing the elegance and fineness of the lines. I barely touched the corners where the three edges met. I fitted the door of the cupboard into the frame at the front with a maximum of precision so that it closed almost hermetically, with a gentle frictional resistance and a barely audible sound of escaping air.
It felt good working on this cupboard. Making the precisely fitting joints and exact shapes to form a whole, a complete object that corresponds to my inner vision, triggering in me a sense of intense concentration, and the finished piece of furniture added freshness to my environment.

We present an algorithm to explore an orthogonal polygon using a team of p robots. This algorithm combines ideas from information-theoretic exploration algorithms and computational geometry based exploration algorithms. The algorithm is based on a single-robot polygon exploration algorithm and a tree exploration algorithm. We show that the exploration time of our algorithm is competitive (as a function of p) with respect to the offline optimal exploration algorithm. We discuss how this strategy can be adapted to real-world settings to deal with noisy sensors. In addition to theoretical analysis, we investigate the performance of our algorithm through simulations for multiple robots and experiments with a single robot. / Master of Science / In applications such as disaster recovery, the layout of the environment is generally unknown. Hence, there is a need to explore the environment in order to effectively perform search and rescue. Exploration of unknown environments using a single robot is a well studied problem. We present an algorithm to perform the task with a team of p robots for the specific case of orthogonal polygons, i.e. polygonal environments where each side is aligned with either the X or the Y axis. The algorithm is based on a single-robot polygon exploration algorithm and a tree exploration algorithm. We show that the exploration time of our algorithm is competitive (as a function of p) with respect to the optimal offline algorithm. We then optimize the information gain of the path followed by the robots by allowing local detours in order to decrease the entropy in the map.
