Modeling Goal-Directed User Exploration in Human-Computer Interaction

Teo, Leonghwee 01 February 2011 (has links)
Designing user-interfaces so that first-time or infrequent users can accomplish their goals by exploration has been an enduring challenge in Human-Computer Interaction. Iterative user-testing is an effective but costly method to develop user-interfaces that support use through exploration. A complementary method is to use modeling tools that can generate predictions of user exploration given a user-interface and a goal description. Recent computational models of goal-directed user exploration have focused on predicting user exploration of websites and demonstrated how predictions can inform user-interface design. These models employ the common concepts of label following and information scent: that the user's choice is partly determined by the semantic relevance between the user's goal and the options presented in the user-interface. However, in addition to information scent, other factors including the layout position and grouping of options in the user-interface also affect user exploration and the likelihood of success. This dissertation contributes a new model of goal-directed user exploration, called CogTool- Explorer, which considers the layout position and the grouping of options in the user-interface in concert with a serial evaluation visual search process and information scent. Tests show that predictions from CogTool-Explorer match participant data better than alternative models that do not consider layout position and grouping. This dissertation work has also integrated the CogTool- Explorer model into an existing modeling tool, called CogTool, making it easier for other researchers and practitioners to setup and generate predictions of likely user exploration paths and task performance using CogTool-Explorer.

Efeito da inoculação de lipopolissacarídeo em ratos recém-nascidos sobre o comportamento exploratório na adolescência / Effect of lipopolysaccharide inoculation in newborn rats on exploratory behavior in adolescence

Rodriguez, Javier Leonardo Rico 28 January 2011 (has links)
The administration of the bacterial component lipopolysaccharide (LPS) during early life is a commonly used animal model of early infection. The effects of this treatment on exploratory behavior have generally been observed in adult rats. However, little is known about these effects on important stages of development such as adolescence. The present study analyzed the effect of repeated inoculation of LPS in newborn rats on the exploratory behavior. In the first experiment, male Wistar rat pups were divided into three groups (N = 12) and received intraperitoneal injections of either vehicle solution (PBS) or LPS (E. coli; 0.05 mg/kg) or were left undisturbed at 3 and 5 days of age. In adolescence, between 40 and 46 days of age, the animals were exposed to the following behavioral tests: elevated plus-maze, open-field, novel-object exploration task, hole-board, elevated aversion gradient and the forced swim test. The results showed that adolescent rats exposed to this paradigm of early inoculation exhibited a profile of impulsive behavior characterized by increased locomotion, high exploration of open areas and low neophobia when compared with control group animals. These animals also exhibited an active style of coping with stress in the first session of the forced swim test. Similar to the procedure used in the first experiment, a second experiment was conducted to determine whether prolonged daily inoculation of LPS (2 to 7 days of age) could alter the exploratory behavior during adolescence. The results showed that prolonged inoculation altered the stress coping style in adolescent rats. During the first session of the forced swim, rats treated with LPS spent less time climbing and spent more time in immobile posture, as compared with the control group animals. As a whole, the results of both experiments showed that repeated manipulations in early life may increase exploratory activity and early LPS inoculation leads to increased number of rearings. The role of cytokines in early life on the development of components related to stress response is discussed together with the importance of early experiences with infectious organisms in the development of adaptive responses to novelty during adolescence.
