A Study of the Satellite Interferer Positioning in Taiwan¡¦s Environment

In this thesis, the positioning accuracy of the techniques in Taiwan¡¦s environment can be estimated by using the existing positioning algorithms. The satellite interferer location techniques for geostationary satellites can produce an error ellipse by measuring time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) between two signals which pass through the different uplink and downlink path of two satellites. In order to reduce the positioning error of the TDOA/FDOA technique, we proposed a method that using a helicopter to achieve the multibeam antenna (MBA) positioning. Using angle measurement, the positioning is carried out by fitting the measured power ratio of the interference signals received by the multibeam antenna to the gain ratio of the beams as a function of the incoming angle. This hybrid positioning technique was shown to reduce the positioning error and search area of the error ellipse.

Passive Positioning Using Linear Multilateration

Passive localization of aircraft in flight using signal time of arrival (TOA) poses some unique challenges. The sensors must be deployed in an approximately coplanar configuration, which produces significant vertical uncertainty in the estimated position. This dissertation examines the traditional algorithms used in passive localization. It presents general forms of linear TOA, time difference of arrival (TDOA), angle of arrival (AOA), and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) equations from the literature and explains how to apply an intuitive geometric interpretation of these equations. It presents two novel algorithms for passive localization. One uses a one dimensional AOA (1AOA) to improve the vertical estimate. The other employs an a priori estimate to approximate the non-linear localization problem as a linear problem and produce a high quality position estimate. A comprehensive survey of the literature is presented. This dissertation provides a summary and classification of passive localization algorithms from the literature with simple descriptions of how the form of the equations relate to their numerical stability. It presents two novel algorithms for passive localization. The hybrid multilateration and triangulation algorithm improves wide area multilateration by using vertical 1AOA to constrain the vertical position. The multilateration with a priori estimates algorithm provides a linear localization method that utilizes previous location estimates.

Impact of MIMO Transmission on CAF-Based Geolocation

The Cross Ambiguity Function (CAF) is often used for passive geolocation of an emitter based on the time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) of the received signals. CAF performance has been thoroughly investigated in regards to traditional single-input single-output (SISO) signals. Little is known about how the CAF will respond to signals from multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems which utilize multiple antennas. This thesis focuses on characterizing the CAF's magnitude distribution in order to determine the probability of correctly determining the correct TDOA/FDOA bin, and the resulting impact on geolocation. The received signals are studied in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) as well as multi-channel propagation effects such as phase ambiguities and offsets due to multi-antenna transmission. Two and four transmit antennas using either a form of spatial multiplexing or space-time block coding are the focus of this work because they are mostly commonly found in currently deployed communication systems. The effects of these transmit schemes are studied with respect to TDOA/FDOA error and the resulting position error. The analysis is performed using a detection theory framework as opposed to estimation theory in order to empha- size the impact of MIMO transmission on determining the correct TDOA/FDOA bin. A simple method using the CAF magnitude as a decision statistic is also presented so that TDOA/FDOA errors can be detected and filtered in an attempt to improve positioning estimates. / Master of Science
