A raman spectroscopy study of semiconducting thin films

Goosen, William Edward January 2006 (has links)
A home-built Raman system, utilizing a pseudo-backscattering geometry, was built in the Physics Department at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). The system was then used to analyse a variety of bulk and thin film semiconducting materials currently being studied in the Physics Department. Silicon wafers were exposed to hydrogen plasma. Raman analysis of hydrogen induced platelets (HIPs), resulting from hydrogen plasma treatment of silicon, is reported. ZnO layers were deposited on glass, GaAs, Si, sapphire and SiC-Si substrates by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) in the Physics Department at the NMMU. It was found that the ZnO layers grown by MOCVD all exhibited a strong E2 (high) phonon mode that dominated the Raman spectra. Furthermore, the spectra lacked the A1 (LO) phonon mode which is usually associated with the O-vacancy, the Zn-interstitial, or complexes of the two, indicating that the layers were all of good quality. The influence of depositing the ZnO thin film on a 3 mm thick SiC layer was also investigated and compared with the deposition of ZnO on Si substrate, in order to reduce the lattice mismatch between ZnO and the Si substrate. The possible shift of the Raman peaks due to the residual strain in the film, if present, could not be resolved. Characterization of GaN and AlxGa1-xN produced by MOCVD at the CRHEA laboratory of the CNRS in Valbonne, France is reported. A sharp peak at 567 cm-1 corresponding to the E2 (high) mode of GaN broadens and shifts to higher wavenumbers as the aluminium content of the AlxGa1-xN is increased. The shift is accompanied by a decrease in the intensity and a broadening of this peak. The broadening was attributed to a general decrease in the quality of the layers which accompanies increased aluminium content in AlxGa1-xN.

Stoichiometry control mechanisms of bias sputtered zinc oxide films

Brett, Michael Julian January 1985 (has links)
This thesis reports the first detailed study of the stoichiometry control mechanisms and physical properties of ZnO films deposited by dc planar magnetron sputtering of a Zn target in a reactive Ar/0₂ atmosphere. Control of film stoichiometry was achieved using a subsidiary rf discharge at the substrate and a reactive gas baffle surrounding the target. The reactive gas baffle was shown to enhance film oxidation by decreasing the metal flux to the substrate and increasing the oxygen partial pressure near the substrate. Rutherford backscattering analysis of film stoichiometry demonstrated that the effect of the rf discharge was to increase the O/Zn composition ratio. This oxidation was shown to occur through preferential resputtering and preferential evaporation of excess Zn and by activation and ion plating of oxygen species. Resputtering and evaporation rates were found to be enhanced above that expected for bulk Zn, due to the weak bonding of surface adatoms during film growth. Conducting ZnO films produced at various values of the rf-induced substrate bias voltage were characterized for electrical, optical and structural properties using Hall probe,. X-ray diffraction, electron microscope, and visible and infrared spectroscopy techniques. Films deposited at low substrate bias (0 to -50V) were found to have a large Zn excess (15%) resulting in low electron mobilities (1 cm²/Vs), high resistivities (10⁻² Ωcm) and were strongly absorbing in the visible. Films deposited at high substrate bias were nearly stoichiometric, optically transparent and had high electron mobilities (15 cm²/Vs) resulting in low resistivity (10⁻³ Ωcm). The optical properties of transparent conducting films for wavelengths 0.4 to 20 /im were modelled by the Drude theory of free electrons using measured electrical transport properties. The original goal of this work, to develop a heat mirror coating suitable for manufacture, was achieved by bias sputter deposition of ZnO onto uncooled polyester sheet at deposition rates approaching 75 nm/min. The best heat mirror films had a transmission to solar energy of 75% and an 85% reflection of 300 K blackbody radiation. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

Magnetic properties of sputtered CoCr films and magneto-optics of rare earth-transition metal multilayers

Li, Zhanming January 1988 (has links)
The goal of the thesis is to make contributions to the development of two new technologies for data storage: perpendicular recording and magneto-optic recording. CoCr and rare earth-transition metal multilayers are the most suitable media for perpendicular recording and magneto-optic recording technologies, respectively. In part A of the thesis, magnetic properties of CoCr thin films produced by dc magnetron sputtering are studied for various deposition conditions. Dielectric constants and extraordinary Hall effect are also studied to provide information complementary to magnetic properties. In part B, new methods are developed for theoretical analysis of the magneto-optics of rare earth-transition metal multilayers, which can be used to optimize the readout of the recording system. Part A For dc magnetron sputtered CoCr films the perpendicular and parallel magnetic coercivities are found to be mainly controlled by the substrate temperature during film growth. Substrate temperatures between 180 and 300 C are necessary to fabricate CoCr thin films for recording media. Films produced in this manner have magnetic anisotropy constants ranging from —1.0 to +0.5 10⁶erg/cc. The magnetic anisotropy has a complicated dependence on a large number of deposition parameters and can be best controlled by the dc sputtering power and the target-to-substrate distance. Based on microstructural analysis film properties are interpreted in terms of the adatom diffusion during film growth. It is found that high adatom mobility and low deposition rate promote positive magnetic anisotropy. The dielectric constants measured by ellipsometry are found to depend on the film thickness because of the change in film morphology during film growth. The effects of asymmetric sputtering are analyzed, and the relationship between the extraordinary Hall effect and the magnetic properties is investigated. Part B The 4x4 matrix method proposed by Lin-Chung and Teitler[P. J. Lin-Chung and S. Teitler, J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 1 703(1984)] is applied to the magneto-optics of the rare earth-transition metal multilayer system. Based on a plane wave model, the above method enables one to calculate the sensitivity of the readout to the layer thicknesses as well as effects of oblique angle of incidence, anisotropy in the nonmagnetic part of the dielectric constants and misalignment of the magnetization. Finally, an improved model is presented to take into account the fact that the reading laser is a strongly focused beam instead of a plane wave. This new model is used to optimize the magneto-optic multilayer system. When the focal spot size of the reading laser beam is less than about three wavelengths, significantly different results are obtained from the focused beam and the plane wave models. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

The study of the national specificity of horror film in Post-socialist China

Lyu, Bo January 2019 (has links)
MA by Coursework and Research Report Wits School of Arts - Film & Television 2019 / This thesis is a study of post-socialist Chinese horror cinema – namely, horror films of the period from the film industry reform in 2003 to the present – and centres around the question of how Chinese horror filmmakers are responding to the new policies and regulations and achieve their financial success by fulfilling audiences’ expectations from the perspective of cultural traditions. It contributes to an overview of the Chinese film industry and the production value chain of horror films that is rarely accessible to the English-speaking world, thus it is also intended as a practical guide for producers and potential investors interested in entering the contemporary Chinese horror film market. This thesis argues for the essential role of government regulation and the cultural context of China in shaping the generic attributes of Chinese horror film in both post-socialist China and post-socialist cinema. / NG (2020)
