Variations in behaviour function in individuals with intellectual disability and psychotropic medication

Cox, Alison January 1900 (has links)
Psychopharmacological and behavioural interventions are used to treat challenging behaviours (e.g., self-injury, aggression, stereotypy, bizarre vocalizations) in individuals with intellectual disability (ID), often in combination. However, little is known about the behavioural mechanisms underlying psychopharmacological treatment. Establishing a better understanding of these mechanisms could contribute to improving treatment efficacy. For this study, I conducted repeated functional analyses using single-subject experimental designs to assess the impact of naturally varying dosages of psychotropic medications on behaviour function. Four individuals with ID who engaged in challenging behaviour and were undergoing psychotropic medication changes participated. Medication impact across two topographies for one participant, and three topographies for another participant were assessed, for a total of seven cases. For Analysis 1, I calculated standardized mean differences between baseline and final drug administration phases to estimate the overall effect of medication. I used this information to examine whether response rate following drug administration was related to response rate during baseline, referred to as rate-dependency. Rate-dependency was not observed. Analysis 2 explored the relation between psychotropic medications and behaviour function identified through functional analyses. Challenging behaviour was the dependent variable, while functional analysis conditions and psychotropic medication level served as independent variables. The latter was a quasi-experimental variable given participants’ psychiatric team prescribed changes independent of the researchers. Behaviour function correspondence, defined as no function change after a medication manipulation, was observed across 14 of the 21 medication manipulations (67%). / October 2015

Meeting the Learning Needs of Individual Children in the Mainstream Classroom

Patterson, Melanie Sian January 2008 (has links)
A teacher in a mainstream classroom identified six children with behaviour difficulties or learning difficulties who were not receiving any assistance outside of the classroom. The teacher was to independently complete a functional assessment of each child to reach a hypothesis about the cause of the difficulty, and then choose and implement an appropriate intervention. Treatment integrity was monitored throughout the interventions to ensure correct implementation. It became apparent that the teacher was unable to complete adequate functional assessments or maintain appropriate interventions because of the time constraints associated with being in a classroom and her lack of specialist knowledge.

Iteration of the power operation

Garner, William Howard January 1995 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of the sequence of functions defined by fl (x) -xand fn+1 (x) -x , where the power is the principal value. In the case where the sequence is restricted to positive real this sequence of functions over thecomplex plane, we attack real numbers, the problem yields to the methods of analysis and we prove the behavior of the sequence. The more general problem of describing the behavior of both analytically and numerically. Though no full rigorous solution is given, the results presented suggest the behavior of the sequence over the complex plane is very interesting. / Department of Mathematical Sciences

A matrix formulation of quantum stochastic calculus

Belton, Alexander C. R. January 1998 (has links)
We develop the theory of chaos spaces and chaos matrices. A chaos space is a Hilbert space with a fixed, countably-infinite, direct-sum decomposition. A chaos matrix between two chaos spaces is a doubly-infinite matrix of bounded operators which respects this decomposition. We study operators represented by such matrices, particularly with respect to self-adjointness. This theory is used to re-formulate the quantum stochastic calculus of Hudson and Parthasarathy. Integrals of chaos-matrix processes are defined using the Hitsuda-Skorokhod integral and Malliavin gradient, following Lindsay and Belavkin. A new way of defining adaptedness is developed and the consequent quantum product Ito formula is used to provide a genuine functional Ito formula for polynomials in a large class of unbounded processes, which include the Poisson process and Brownian motion. A new type of adaptedness, known as $\Omega$-adaptedness, is defined. We show that quantum stochastic integrals of $\Omega$-adapted processes are well-behaved; for instance, bounded processes have bounded integrals. We solve the appropriate modification of the evolution equation of Hudson and Parthasarathy: $U(t)=I+\int_{0}^{t}E(s)\mathrm{d}\Lambda(s)+F(s)\mathrm{d} A(s)+ G(s)U(s)\mathrm{d} A^{\dagger}(s)+H(s)U(s)\mathrm{d} s, $ where the coefficients are time-dependent, bounded, $\Omega$-adapted processes acting on the whole Fock space. We show that the usual conditions on the coefficients, viz. $(E,F,G,H)=(W-I,L,-WL^{*},iK+\mbox{$\frac{1}{2}$}LL^{*})$ where $W$ is unitary and $K$ self-adjoint, are necessary and sufficient conditions for the solution to be unitary. This is a very striking result when compared to the adapted case.

On the Subspace Dichotomy of Lp[0; 1] for 2 < p < ∞

James, Christopher W 08 1900 (has links)
The structure and geometry of subspaces of a given Banach space is among the most fundamental questions in Functional Analysis. In 1961, Kadec and Pelczyński pioneered a field of study by analyzing the structures of subspaces and basic sequences in L_p[0,1] under a naturally occurring restriction of p, 2 < p <\infty. They proved that any infinite-dimensional subspace X\subset L_p[0,1] for 2<p<\infty must either be isomorphic to l_2 and complemented in L_p or must contain a complemented subspace which is isomorphic to l_p. Many works since have studied the relationships between the sides of this dichotomy, chiefly by weakening hypotheses on side of the equation to gain stronger assumptions on the other. In this way, Johnson and Odell were able to show in 1974 that if X contains no further subspace which is isomorphic to l_2, then it must embed into l_p. Kalton and Werner further strengthened this result in 1993 by showing that such an embedding must be almost isometric. We start by analyzing the tools and definitions originally introduced in 1961 and define a natural extension to these methods. By analyzing this extension, we provide a constructive and streamlined reproving of Kalton and Werner's theorem: Let X be an infinite dimensional subspace of L_p[0,1] for 2<p<\infty. Then, either X contains a subspace which is isomorphic to l_2, or for every \varepsilon>\ 0, X embeds into l_p with constant 1 + \varepsilon.
