O presente trabalho trata do processo da institucionalização do ensino médico no Rio Grande do Sul, tendo como foco a Faculdade de Medicina de Porto Alegre, durante a Iª República. Analisando a instituição através de uma dinâmica sócio-histórica ampla, procurei entender os caminhos que levaram à implantação do ensino médico no estado, centrando nas ações dos indivíduos que participaram de tal percurso, em especial, os professores da escola em destaque. Compreendi que para além dos processos formais ligados ao funcionamento de uma instituição de nível superior, ensinar medicina era um processo sujeito às aspirações, estratégias e objetivos desses lentes que iam para além da formação “profissional” dos estudantes. Esse cenário marca a atividade médica como uma esfera de atuação sujeita a diversas interferências e forças sociais, que acabam por constituí-la no período em estudo. / This work discusses the process of institutionalization of medicine in Rio Grande do Sul, focusing on the Faculty of Medicine of Porto Alegre, during the First Republic. Analyzing the institution through a wide dynamic socio-historical, I tried to understand the paths that led to the deployment of medical education in the state, focusing on the actions of individuals who participated in this course, especially the professors highlighted. I realized that in addition to the formal processes associated with the operation of an institution of higher education, teaching Medicine was a process subject to the aspirations, strategies and objectives of these masters that went beyond training "professional" students. This scenario marks the medical activity as a sphere of action subject to various interferences and social forces that form it during the study period.
