Esta tesis doctoral recoge, a partir de una investigación exhaustiva, una panorámica de conjunto de la arquitectura realizada en la ciudad de Valencia entre 1939 y 1957. Los capítulos que contiene se estructuran fundamentalmente a partir de una clasificación por tipologías, a diferencia de los habituales estudios de Historia del Arte basados en los estilos artísticos, y en un amplio capítulo dedicado a la obra realizada por los arquitectos que trabajaron durante este periodo en Valencia, incorporando un pormenorizado listado de las obras que construyeron, organizadas cronológicamente, y aportando numerosa información documental inédita. Al finalizar la Guerra Civil en España, el nuevo Régimen pretende imponer una arquitectura nacional a partir de la fascinación que siente hacia los movimientos totalitarios de Alemania e Italia. En este tiempo, y hasta la derrota del ejército alemán, la obra de Troost o Speer se toma en cierta medida como modelo ideal. Esto vendrá acompañado por la intención autocrática de realizar una arquitectura tutelada por el Estado, que no duda en disponer de los aparatos burocráticos y de propaganda necesarios. Junto a esta situación general, y a pesar de las circunstancias lamentables derivadas de la Guerra, existe una necesidad de retomar la Valencia moderna y monumental del periodo inmediatamente anterior, por lo que se recuperan algunos proyectos urbanísticos. La avenida del Oeste se convertirá en el ejemplo más contundente de la continuidad en estas pretensiones. Suavizada en cierta medida la inestabilidad de los primeros años de posguerra, habrá un mayor aperturismo, que en arquitectura corresponde a la segunda fase del Movimiento Moderno. La riada de 1957 con la que terminamos el estudio, supone un duro golpe para la ciudad, una difícil situación de la que deberá salir no sin ayuda y esfuerzo. / This dissertation undertakes an overview of the whole architecture made in the city of Valencia between 1939 and 1957. On the one hand, the chapters are structured according to a typological classification, unlike the usual art history studies based on artistic styles. On the other hand, there is a comprehensive chapter devoted to the work done by architects who worked during this period in Valencia, incorporating a detailed list of the works that are organized chronologically. After the Civil War in Spain, the new Regime intends to impose a national architecture, fascinated by the totalitarian movements in Germany and Italy. At this time, and until the defeat of the German army, the work of Troost and Speer is taken to some extent as an ideal model. This will be accompanied by the intention of making an autocratic tutelage of the architecture promoted by the government, which no doubt had the necessary equipment: bureaucracy and propaganda. Along with this general situation, and despite the unfortunate circumstances arising from the war, there is a need to revisit the modern and monumental preceding period of Valencia. Thus, some former architectural projects are recovered. Western Avenue will become the most striking example of continuity in these claims. Softened to some extent the instability of the early postwar years, there is a greater openness. That architecture is the second phase of the Modern Movement. The study ends with the flood of 1957. This was a blow for the city, a difficult situation to get through with help and effort.
