The present multidisciplinary research work deals with the study of an experiment on sociability in the local community centres meant for the aged people of Paraiba State (Brazil) who belong to the economically poor social class. It discusses and analyses the sociodemographic aspects of the aging process in the brazilian society in order to pennit the understanding of the poor segments of the society under study. A realistic chart of the sociofamiliar life of the old age is presented and its representation is discussed. Inspired by the theoretical propositions of Georg Simmel (1983), the present study postulates that sociability is an important and a necessary alternative of solidarity in the old age, by analysing the importance attributed by the old people in sharing the sociability with their colleagues of the same age group. Although local community groups include either sexes, they primarily mobilize women, and those who have a permanent source of income (retirement benefits, pensions, etc.), enjoy good health and can move unaided. The main sources of attraction and incentive in this form of sociability are leisure entertainment, friendship and caring / Doutorado / Doutor em Antropologia
