Absent yet still present: family pictures in Argentina's recordatoriosVan Dembroucke, Celina 27 October 2010 (has links)
This study analyzes one of the most active memories of state repression during democracy in Argentina: the memorial advertisements (recordatorios) of those disappeared by the most recent military dictatorship (1976-1983), which are published on a daily basis in the newspaper Página/12. In this thesis, I focus on the pictures of the victims of state repression that appear within the frame of these memorials as the expression of both cultural and personal memory.
The leader of Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, Estela de Carlotto, published the first recordatorio on the tenth anniversary of her daughter’s death, in August 1988. During that same year, 20 relatives of disappeared people went to the newspaper and followed Carlotto’s footsteps, publishing advertisements themselves. Currently, more than 20 years after the first advertisement was published, three to five recordatorios appear in the newspaper every day.
The emergence of the recordatorios inaugurates a new discursive genre as contradictory as the disappearance itself. On the one hand, they are connected to the announcements related to the search for missing people (serving the goal of finding a person alive). On the other hand, the recordatorios also resemble obituaries (making a tribute to someone that has passed away). The recordatorio thus emerges as an impossible reality, following the logic of both genres, thus performing both functions in a paradoxical way.
This study focuses on the family pictures that appear in the recordatorios and sheds light on how they illustrate the entanglement of the family and the public sphere, and contribute to the debate on the role of personal subjectivity in the construction of collective memory. From a multidisciplinary perspective, the present thesis aims to capture the complexity surrounding these texts and the familial imagery they include, looking at the inherent tension between the private tragedy of a family that has lost one of its members and the public character that stems from their publication in one of Argentina’s national newspapers. / text

Neuropsychological Constructs Assessed by the Family Pictures SubtestsHarris, Kristen M. 01 January 2009 (has links)
Limited data are available regarding the clinical utility of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III (WMS-III) Family Pictures (FP) subtest, yet it has received much criticism in the literature. Specific problems of the subtest that have been cited include the lack of clarity regarding the neuropsychological functions that significantly influence successful performance. The current study assesses the extent to which performance on the FP I and FP II subtests can be predicted by memory, visual ability, verbal ability, and executive functioning, in 454 outpatients from a neuropsychology clinic. Data from the Family Pictures I (FPI) and Family Pictures II (FPII) subtests, in addition to scores obtained from commonly used measures of memory, verbal, visual, and executive functioning were analyzed via hierarchical multiple regression analyses, co-varying for age and education. The current study also explores the extent to which the FP's individual components of character, location, and action load on factors of general verbal and visual-spatial abilities in a sample of 193 neuropsychology clinic outpatients. Results were obtained via three separate exploratory factor analyses (one for each FP component examined). Results of the multiple regression analyses indicated that FP I and FP II performance is best predicted by a mixed visual/verbal memory factor. Furthermore, the factor analyses revealed that all three components of location, action, and character load on a mixed general visual ability and general memory factor. These findings expand upon previous research by lending greater understanding of the skills needed for successful FP performance in neuropsychologically impaired populations.

Neste sentido, busca avaliar como se dá o processo de integração e inserção da nora na família por aliança e a percepção da sogra diante da chegada, na família, deste novo membro feminino; como os cônjuges, pivôs do parentesco por aliança, imprimem ritmo à relação com a parentela e ainda, que estratégias constroem para superação de tensões e conflitos. Os efeitos dos diferentes pertencimentos sociais sobre estas relações é um ponto que deve ser considerado na medida em que as trocas materiais são, muitas vezes, responsáveis pela aproximação dos indivíduos na família. Vale ressaltar as imagens de família como instrumento rico para análise das relações. / This current research focuses on the alliance relationship, which is a relationship that is established without the privilege of choice, so dear to people nowadays. In this sense, It assessed how it is the process of integration and insertion of the daughter-in-law in the family for alliance and the perception of the parents before the arrival in the family, this new female member, such as spouses, pivots of kinship by alliance, who gives rhythm to the relationship with relatives, and also that builds strategies to overcome tensions and conflicts. The effects of different social backgrounds on these relationships are a point that should be considered in that exchange materials which are often responsible for bringing the individuals in the family. It is noteworthy the family images like a rich instrument for analysis of relationships.

[ES] En esta tesis doctoral se analizan y estudian la relevancia y significación de diferentes trabajos y proyectos de artistas contemporáneos en torno al álbum de familia y la representación autobiográfica, siguiendo para ello la programación del programa de la Imagen VISIONA, formando esta la estructura de la tesis. Este trabajo parte de un estudio de los orígenes y evolución del álbum de familia desde la invención de la fotografía hasta la actualidad, al mismo tiempo que se analizan los diferentes estudios teóricos y muestras expositivas en torno al álbum de familia. Una vez contextualizado el álbum de familia, la tesis estudia el programa de la Imagen VISONA, las motivaciones y sus orígenes, así como parte de los contenidos de algunas de las diferentes actividades de VISIONA. De esta forma se analizan aspectos como el uso del álbum de familia por artistas contemporáneos, la trascendencia del álbum de familia en la construcción de nuestras identidades individuales y colectivas, o hasta qué punto el uso del álbum de familia y la autobiografía constituyen un tema de trabajo e interés en el arte contemporáneo y que constituye casi un género propio en el arte contemporáneo propio de finales del siglo XX y principios de XXI. / [CA] En aquesta tesi doctoral s'analitzen i estudien la rellevància i significació de diferents treballs i projectes d'artistes contemporanis entorn de l'àlbum de família i la representació autobiogràfica, seguint per a això la programació del programa de la Imatge VISIONA, formant aquesta l'estructura de la tesi.
