The lifetime extension of fashion clothing as an alternative for reducing its social and environmental impact

Lima, Verena Ferreira Tidei de 28 June 2013 (has links)
Currently, the excess of production, consumption and disposal of fashion clothing - and the accelerated and continuous rhythm as it happens - results in a social and environmental impact of considerable proportions. This work aimed to discuss possible projectual requirements for the fashion clothing design geared to reducing its social and environmental impact, with emphasis on the lifetime extension of fashion clothing and consequently on change of life cycle dynamics of these products. In order to reach this aim, it was necessary to understand and to study the relation between design and sustainability, to identify the social and environmental impacts of fashion clothing, to list the projectable aspects of fashion clothing that influence the consumer respecting the product, and to assimilate the consumer opinion about fashion clothing and sustainability. From a literature review and an exploratory research, it was possible to infer that the lifetime extension of fashion clothing, in changing the lifecycle dynamics of these products, decelerates the rhythm of its production, its consumption and its disposal, setting up as an alternative for reducing its social and environmental impact.

Gestão de resíduos têxteis na manufatura do vestuário de moda em malharia retilínea: estudo de múltiplos casos / Textile Waste Management in the manufacture of fashionable clothing in rectilinear knitting: multiple case study.

Gentile, Ana Paula 19 October 2017 (has links)
This qualitative research sought the environmental reality of some selected industrial knitting production in the region of Monte Sião, in Minas Gerais, regarding the greater or lesser presence of \"cleaner production\" concerns, as well as its vision in terms of reduction of water use, energy, and especially solid textile waste. It has been justified by the environmental concerns and their preservation that imply issues increasingly relevant and addressed in studies related to fashion clothing, such as design that is fully connected to everyday changes, and interested in reducing materials. Cleaner production is found in this context, aiming to add improvements in the process or product, seeking solutions through the presentation of some processes that guide these paths. A review of the literature on textiles, fashion and environmental scenarios and a field research were carried out based on qualitative exploratory research methods, using direct observations and semi-structured interviews accomplished on-site. Some research results suggest that the environmental reality of the industrial production of knitting products is in line with cleaner production, especially in relation to the treatment of solid textile waste. In the field research approach, differences were observed regarding actions aimed at minimizing water, energy, and solid textile waste generation, while showing them a concern and treatments, indicating in a certain way that there is a balance to the direction of the textile waste and the dedication in the treatment, being an important point of care of the industrial pole

The male fashion bias

Neighbour, Mark Lyle January 2008 (has links)
Since the establishment of the first European fashion houses in the nineteenth century the male wardrobe has been continually appropriated by the fashion industry to the extent that every masculine garment has made its appearance in the female wardrobe. For the womenswear designer, menswear’s generic shapes are easily refitted and restyled to suit the prevailing fashionable silhouette. This, combined with a wealth of design detail and historical references, provides the cyclical female fashion system with an endless supply of “regular novelty” (Barthes, 2006, p.68). Yet, despite the wealth of inspiration and technique across both male and female clothing, the bias has largely been against menswear, with limited reciprocal benefit. Through an exploration of these concepts I propose to answer the question; how can I use womenswear patternmaking and construction technique to implement change in menswear design?

Motivy spotřebitelů k nákupu upcyklované módy / Consumers' Motives for Buying Upcycled Clothes

Bourová, Tereza January 2020 (has links)
The focus of this diploma thesis is on the consumers' motives for purchasing upcycled clothing. Based on the research of available resources, this thesis firstly describes the most expanded model of clothing production, fast fashion, with special focus on the negative environmental impacts it has during different stages of a product life cycle. It later moves on to describe the traditional and more environmentally friendly model, slow fashion, and puts both these concepts (fast fashion and slow fashion) in connection with the hierarchy of waste management and the concept of circular economy. This theoretical base helps to fully understand the concept of upcycled fashion, which is thoroughly described in a separate chapter that also includes various examples of designers who focus on fashion upcycling. The last section of the theoretical part deals with motivation and motives for purchasing clothes. The empirical part of this diploma thesis focuses on how consumers perceive upcycled fashion in order to answer the main research question: What are the consumers' motives for purchasing upcycled clothes? To answer the question, qualitative research was used, specifically semi- structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with a total of twelve shoppers who have had previous personal experience...
