January 2014 (has links)
The present study is an historical investigation about Brazilian psychoanalytic publications related to the Fatherhood in Brazil during the last three decades. This research consists of quantitative and qualitative studies regarded to the intellectual production of fatherhood in Brazil, taking into consideration not only what is being published about this subject, but also considering the way this subject is being elaborated by Brazilian authors. It was possible to verify with this study that the father is still responsible for the mother-son relationship prohibition, considered his symbolic function by Psychoanalysis, and also important to introduce the individual in society and culture. According to Freud and Lacan's Psychoanalysis, fatherhood is associated to the paternal function, not necessarily being connected to the male character, but to its symbolical function of the Name of the Father, active metaphor in the incest prohibition, and the insertion of the individual in the Law and culture. As result from all the changes that the family configuration has suffered over the years, the picture of the father is found in process of transformation. Everything seems to be changing to a model of a nurturing father once fatherhood has been seen as an exchanging between the maternal and paternal functions / Mestre

What it means to be a father : an existential exploration of fatherhood amongst fathers who have a learning disabilityWillmoth, Corrina M. L. January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore the meaning of being a father with a group of five fathers with a Learning Disability, with reference to existential concerns and the role of the counselling psychologist in working with these men. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse nine interviews conducted with five fathers. The main themes that arose from the analysis were "identity with family"; "identity as a father"; "disability as undesired" and "struggles of self in the community". It was found that fathers' identities were complex and mirrored the current cultural diversity of concepts of fatherhood. There were also difficulties highlighted with managing personal relationships and enforced separation from children. Associated with this were the complications of managing painful emotions, particularly anger. Fathers felt that they had been disadvantaged within their local communities and needed support to fulfil their parenting role. This is consistent with published research on parents with Learning Disabilities. Counselling psychologists provide a unique variety of services to people with learning difficulties in combining psychological theory with therapeutic practice which places great emphasis on both personal and relational awareness. Thus it was considered that counselling psychologists might be of specific benefit to assist these fathers with the difficulties they may have in their relationships and coming to terms with the consequences of living with a Learning Disability, as well as supporting professionals to develop strong working relationships with these families. As there is so little published material in this field, further research would be necessary to investigate more fully the considerations pertinent to this group of fathers.

The incidence of paternal postpartum depression in new fathers :Bria, Karina. Unknown Date (has links)
The objective of this review was to appraise and summarise the best available literature on paternal postpartum depression (PPD) in new fathers. / This review has determined that new fathers can suffer depression, distress and anxiety in relation to pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. The transition to fatherhood appeared to have a profound effect on many new fathers. Difficulties within the relationship, a history of depression and postnatal depression in the spouse were more likely to facilitate depression in fathers. Health care professionals play a pivotal role in recognising symptoms associated with PPD and can promote greater awareness of the condition through education. The Edinburgh Depression Scale as an assessment instrument to detect symptoms of postnatal depression (PND) in women has been found to be equally effective in detecting the symptoms of depression in fathers. Available, current literature on PPD is sparse and recommendations are made for continued research on PPD in new fathers, inclusion of awareness programmes on PPD in antenatal education and the development of an assessment tool similar to the EPDS that is gender specific for the routine assessment of new fathers. / Thesis (MMidwifery)--University of South Australia, 2005.
