Intermetallic Phase Formation At Fe-al Film Interefaces

This thesis presents the formation mechanism of intermetallics formed at Fe-Al film interfaces. Al thin films with different initial film thicknesses were coated on low carbon steel substrates by physical vapor deposition (PVD). By annealing the system at different temperatures and for different time intervals, several intermetallic phases were observed. X-Ray, SEM and EDS studies showed that intermetallic phases FeAl2 and Fe2Al5 are most dominant phases which were observed and they formed sequentially on the contrary of intermetallics which formed synchronous in bulk materials.

Study of alloyed nanoclusters on ordered alumina templates

The magnetic properties and growth mode of self-assembly alloy nonoclusters were interests to surface science. Our experiment focused on the growth behavior of Fe-Ag alloy nanoclusters on the ordered alumina templates. We carried out the experiment by scanning tuneling miscoscopy (STM) under an ultra high vacuum chamber with base pressure better than 5 x 10E-11 torr. The clean NiAl(001) surface was prepared by repeating argon sputtr and annealing. Subsequently, it was deposited 1000 L oxygen at elevated temperature to form the ordered alumina templates. Iron and silver nanoclusters were deposited simultaneously on Al2O3/NiAl(001) surface by electron-beam evaporators. We observed the alloy nanoclusters by STM at low temperature. By increasing the silver composition, the height and diameter of alloy nanoclusters was increase, but the increasing ratio of diameter is higher than that of height.

The influence of Mn on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Si based alloys containing Fe

<p>Abstract</p><p>The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of Manganese (Mn) on cast aluminum alloys where a substantial amount of Iron (Fe) is included. Ductility and tensile strength need to be improved in recycled aluminum alloys where greater amounts of Fe are found. Fe is a common impurity and is known to be detrimental to mechanical properties and in order to neutralize the effects of Fe; modifiers such as Mn are added. In this investigation, attempts will be carried out aiming to find the optimal amount of Mn. Other related topics that will be discussed are whether there exists a Mn/Fe ratio which clearly modifies the harmful iron- rich phases and improves the properties for a certain alloy or not. Also, will the heat treatment have a significant effect on mechanical properties? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this paper.</p><p>It is hard to find research articles that focus only on the influence of Mn on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Si cast alloys. Much of the work that is already published concerns only a specific alloy and casting method. In this work three different casting processes, sand-, die- and high pressure die-casting, will be simulated by using gradient solidification equipment. Furthermore, the influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties will be examined.</p><p>The results showed that the solidification rate had the biggest impact on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys, where the fastest cooling rate gave the best results. The effect of Mn seems to influence the samples with coarser microstructures significantly where it had time to modify the Iron-rich needles, also called the β-phase. At higher cooling rates the impact of Mn was impeded. It has been observed that a high content of Mn (around 0.6%) needs to be added before the properties start to improve. UTS (Ultimate Tensile Strength) and YS (Yield Strength) are improved while ductility is lowered. Heat treatment did not seem to have any influence on the effects of Mn.</p>

Shear cracks in concrete structures subjected to in-plane stresses

<p>After only two years of service, extensive cracking was found in the webs of two light-rail commuter line bridges in Stockholm, the Gröndal and Alvik bridges. Due to this incident it was found necessary to study the means available for analysing shear cracking in concrete structures subjected to in-plane stresses. The aim of this PhD project is to study shear cracking with these two bridges as reference. In this thesis, the first part aims to study the possibility of using finite element analysis as a tool for predicting shear cracking for plane state stresses. The second part is concerning how the shear cracks are treated in the concrete design standards.</p><p>Shear cracking in reinforced beams has been studied with non-linear finite element analyses. In these analyses the shear cracking behaviour was compared to experiments conducted to analyse the shear failure behaviour. Finite element analyses were performed with two different FE programs Abaqus and Atena. The material model used in Atena is a smeared crack model based on damage and fracture theory with either fixed or rotated crack direction. The material model used in Abaqus is based on plasticity and damage theory. The fixed crack model in Atena and the model in Abaqus gave good results for all studied beams. For the two studied deep beams with flanges the results from the rotated crack model were almost the same as obtained with the fixed crack model. The rotated crack model in Atena gave though for some beams a rather poor estimation of the behaviour.</p><p>The calculation of crack widths of shear cracks has been studied for the long-term load case in the serviceability state for the Gröndal and Alvik bridges, with the means available in the design standards. The methods based on the crack direction corresponding to the principal stress and do not include the effect of aggregate interlocking seems to be too conservative. Two of the studied methods included the effect of aggregate interlocking, it was made either by introducing stresses in the crack plane or implicitly by changing the direction of the crack so that it no longer coincide with the direction of principal stress. For calculations based on probable load conditions, these methods gave estimations of the crack widths that were close to the ones observed at the bridges. Continuous measurements of cracks at the Gröndal and the Alvik bridges have also been included. Monitoring revealed that the strengthening work with post-tensioned tendons has, so far, been successful. It also revealed that the crack width variations after strengthening are mainly temperature dependent where the daily temperature variation creates movements ten times greater than those from a passing light-rail vehicle. Monitoring a crack between the top flange and the webs on the Gröndal Bridge showed that the top flange was moving in a longitudinal direction relative to the web until the strengthening was completed. The crack widths in the sections strengthened solely by carbon fibre laminates seem to increase due to long-term effects.</p>

An evaluation of the FE-model adopted for modal analysis in the fan booster spool project, GEnx.

<p>Avsikten med denna avhandling är att utvärdera den FE-modell som använts i modalanalyser av komponenten fan booster spool, framtagen och tillverkad av Volvo Aero Corporation, Trollhättan. Detaljen ingår i den civila flygplansmotorn GEnx som är utvecklad för flygplanet Boeing 787 Dreamliner.</p><p>Inledande tester av spolen påvisade en mycket god korrelation mellan analys och test men när spolen senare provkördes i en komplett monterad motor noterades en uppenbar skillnad i resultat. Den andra noddiameterns egenfrekvenser indikerade att spolen i test hade ett något styvare beteende än vad som beräknats i analys.</p><p>En teori utvecklades som byggde på att en initiell kontakt mellan rotor och ett slitskikt på statorn kunde framkalla en förstyvande effekt på spolen när rotorn på grund av rotationslaster expanderar radiellt. Detta examensarbete initierades då för att undersöka om denna kontakt kunde inkluderas i FE-modellen och för att utreda om kontakten har en möjlighet att förstyva spolen.</p><p>Avhandlingen utvärderar FE-modellen med avseende på randvillkor, laster och modelleringsteknik i FE-programmet Ansys 10.0. En grundlig kartläggning av spolens känslighet påvisar en robust komponent med hög motståndskraft mot yttre och inre störningar.</p><p>En förstyvande effekt relaterad till en initiell kontakt mellan slitskikt och spole bekräftas i denna avhandling. Kontakten har visat sig ha särskild inverkan på den andra noddiametern och dess egenfrekvenser. Ett förslag på modelleringsteknik där den förstyvande effekten inkluderas har däremot inte föreslagits i detta arbete då effekten enligt uppgift går förlorad efter en inkörningsperiod.</p><p>Det har i detta arbete visats att det kommando som i Ansys tidigare använts för att kompensera för så kallade spin softening-effekter, kspin, resulterar i konservativa värden för spolens egenfrekvenser. En rekommendation baserad på de resultat som framkommit är därför att utesluta funktionen kspin i modalanalyser för denna komponent. Valet av sektorstorlek och kopplingsmetod mellan masselement och spole har också visats ha en tydlig inverkan på de beräknade egenfrekvenserna.</p><p>Spolens radiella förskjutningar har analyserats som funktion av rotationshastigheten. Resultatet visar att den hastighet då kontakt mellan tätningständer och spole etableras är nästintill identisk med den hastighet då töjningar först börjar uppträda i spolen enligt testdata från töjningsgivarprov.</p>

Prediction and Modelling of Fastener Flexibility Using FE

<p>This report investigates the feasibility and accuracy of determining fastener flexibility with 3D FE and representing fasteners in FE load distribution models with simple elements such as springs or beams. A detailed study of 3D models compared to experimental data is followed by a parametric study of different shell modelling techniques. These are evaluated and compared with industry semi-empirical equations.</p><p>The evaluated 3D models were found to match the experimental values with good precision. Simulations based on these types of 3D models may replace experimental tests. Two different modelling techniques were also evaluated for use in load distribution models. Both were verified to work very well with representing fastener installations in lap-joints using the ABAQUS/Standard solver. Further improvement of one of the models was made through a modification scale factor. Finally, the same modelling technique was verified using the NASTRAN solver.</p><p>To summarize, it is concluded that:</p><p>• Detailed 3D-models with material properties defined from stress-strain curves correspond well to experiments and simulations may replace actual flexibility tests.</p><p>• At mid-surface modelling of the connecting parts, beam elements with a circular cross section as a connector between shell elements is an easy and accurate modelling technique, with the only data input of bolt material and dimension.</p><p>• Using connector elements is accurate only if the connecting parts are modelled in the same plane, i.e. with no offset. Secondary bending due to offset should only be accounted for once and only once throughout the analysis, and it is already included in the flexibility input.</p>

First-Principles Study of Elastic Properties of Fe-Mg alloy at Earth’s core pressure

<p>The purpose of this thesis has been to investigate the elastic properties of an fcc FeMg alloy with 10 at.% magnesium under high pressure. Recent research has shown that magnesium can be a possible candidate for light element impurities in the Earth’s inner core, something that was previously not considered possible because of the low miscibility of magnesium in iron at ambient pressure. Gaining knowledge about the composition of the Earth’s core can help us better understand such phenomena as seismic activity and the fluctuations of the Earth’s magnetic field.</p><p>The elastic constants of the FeMg alloy was calculated using ab-initio methods based on Density Functional Theory. The Exact Muffin-Tin Orbitals method was used in conjunction with the Coherent Potential Approximation.</p><p>The FeMg alloy was found to be overall considerably softer than pure iron, and the softening effect on the elastic constants was also found to increase with pressure. The results also showed that 10% Mg alloying increased the anisotropy with about 40% compared to pure iron.</p>
