Structure and spin dynamics in Cr Doped ZnO

Amami, Paul Erhire 06 1900 (has links)
Polycrystalline Zn1-xCrxO (0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.09) samples synthesized by solid state reaction technique were sintered at different temperatures following slow step sintering schedule. Structural, micro-structural, optical, magnetic properties and homogeneity were investigated using suitable characterisation techniques. Cr2O3 and CrO2 phases have been detected in the XRD patterns and Raman spectra of Zn1-xCrxO samples with x ≥ 0.05. Photoluminescence study has indicated improved optical property of the samples compared to undoped ZnO. While low percentage Cr doped samples showed diamagnetic behaviour, higher percentage doped samples (≥ 5%) exhibited ferromagnetic, paramagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic behaviours depending upon the sintering temperatures. The magnetic properties have been analysed through Electron Spin Resonance study. A g-value of 1.97 indicates Cr in +3 valence state in doped ZnO system. Presence of Cr3+ and Cr4+ in ZnO is understood to facilitate super exchange interactions to promote ferromagnetism at room temperature. ESR study shows improved magnetic homogeneity achieved by slow step sintering process. / Physics / M. Sc. (Physics)

A SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THERMODYNAMIC AND TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF LAYERED Can+1(Ru1-xCrx)nO3n+1

Durairaj, Vinobalan 01 January 2008 (has links)
Orbital degrees of freedom play vital role in prompting novel phenomena in ruthenium based Ruddlesden-Popper compounds through coupling of orbits to spin and lattice. Physical properties are then particularly susceptible to small perturbations by external magnetic fields and/or slight structural changes. Current study pertains to the impact when a more-extended 4d Ruthenium ion is replaced by a less-extended 3d Chromium ion. Perovskite CaRuO3 (n=∞) is characterized by borderline magnetism and non- Fermi liquid behavior – common occurrences in quantum critical compounds. Remarkably, Cr substitution as low as x=0.05 abruptly drives CaRu1−xCrxO3 from a paramagnetic state to an itinerant ferromagnetic state (MS~0.4μB/f.u.), where TC=123K for x=0.22. The Cr-driven magnetism is highly anisotropic suggesting an important role of spin-orbit coupling. Unlike other chemical substitutions in the compound, Cr does not induce any Metal-Insulator transition that is expected to accompany the magnetic transition. The results indicate a coupling of Ru-4d and Cr-3d electrons that is unexpectedly favorable for itinerant ferromagnetism, which often exists delicately in the ruthenates. Bilayered Ca3Ru2O7 (n=2), an abode of huge anisotropy, exhibits a wide range of physical properties – Colossal Magnetoresistance occurring only when the spin polarized state is avoided, Antiferromagnetic-Metallic (AFM-M) state, Quantum Oscillations (periodic in 1/B and in B) that are highly angular dependent, to mention a few. Experimental results obtained so far provide a coherent picture illustrating that orbital order and its coupling to lattice and spin degrees of freedom drive the exotic electronic and magnetic properties in this Mott-like system. Transport and thermodynamic studies on Ca3(Ru1-xCrx)2O7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20) reveal that AFM-M region is broadened with x that ultimately reaches 70K for x=0.20 (~8K for x=0). In this region, electron transport is enhanced and inhibited when B is applied along crystal’s respective axes, confirming an intrinsic half-metallic behavior. Moreover, the difference in coercivities of Ru and Cr magnetic ions pave way for the first-ever observation of a strong spin-valve effect in bulk material, a quantum phenomenon so far realized only in multilayer thin films or heterostructures. This discovery opens new avenues to understand the underlying physics of spin-valves and fully realize its potential in practical devices.

Etude de la dynamique des parois de domaines dans les nano-systèmes ferromagnétiques / Study of domain wall dynamics in ferromagnetic nano-systems

Pivano-Danand, Adrien 29 September 2017 (has links)
The study of the domain wall dynamics in ferromagnetic nano-systems is crucial for the developement of data-storage devices based on control and displacement of the domain walls. These devices have several advantages : non-volatility, fast execution time, high density, and low power consumption. Using micromagnetics and analytical methods, we have shown that the interaction between two domain walls influences the depinning process under magnetic field, in cylindrical and planar shaped nickel nanowires. We highlighted the nonlinear behaviour of the dynamics of a pinned domain wall, which varies with the material properties and the type of the pinning sites. The Lyapunov phase diagrams display chaotic and periodic regions function of the amplitude and frequency of a harmonic excitation. We have also presented results about the precise manipulation of transverse domain walls by current pulses in a nickel planar nanowire with artificial defects. We have shown that exact positioning of the domain walls at room temperature is possible only for very short symmetric current pulses. We observed inertial effects which can oppose or amplify the spin transfert torque effect. These results open a route to domain wall displacement in both directions with unipolar current pulses.

Anisotropias induzidas em ligas ferromagnéticas amorfas / Induced anisotropy in amorphous ferromagnetic alloys

Santos, Antonio Domingues dos 07 March 1991 (has links)
In this thesis we will present a series of studies related to induced magnetic anisotropies (Kind) in amorphous alloys. In order to get a more general view of this theme, we used several different kinds of annealings. The theoretical analysis of the data of Kind and magnetic after-effect (MAE) was performed using a model based on two-level systems (TLS). From the analysis of the experimental data we get a large actiyation energy spectrum. These energies are related to the relaxation times, through the Arrheniu \'s expression: = 0 exp(E/kT), where the pre-factor 0 is of the order of the inverse of the Debye frequency . We constructed a furnace for thermal annealing of the amorphous alloys, which operates within an electromagnet producing 6 kOe. We also wrote, the computer programs for the analysis of the experimental data. These facilities, together with the hysteresis loop tracer permitted the followings studies of the induced anisotropies in amorphous alloys: 1) A study of the kinetics of the induced anisotropy by annealing in the temperature range from 190 to 250 °C, in as cast amorphous ribbons of composition Co70.4Fe4.6Si15B10. Using the TLS model we obtained the activation energy spectrum. It presents two peaks in the energy range from 1.50 to 1.85eV and a pre-factor 0= 1.6x10-13 s. 2) Using a 5 KOe magnetic field we studied the effects of a Field annealing treatment in samples pre-annealed at 400 °C for 10 minutes. The isothermal annealings were made in Co70-XMnXSi14B9 with x = 2 and 6, in the temperature range from 240 to 325 °C. In this case we observed for these two compositions a larger pre-factor ( 10-8s) than before. The activation-energy spectra, for the both composition, are found in the energy range from 1.10 to 1.55eV. 3) Another experiment was done using samples of Co67Fe4Mo1Si12B16. We applied a tensile stress (800MPa) to the ribbon and measured the magnetic anisotropy energy. We observed a continuous variation of this energy and, after removal of the stress, the sample recuperated its initial condition, showing a process characteristically anelastic. We studied the effects of mechanic stress on the magnetic properties of samples of composition Co67Fe4Mo1Si12B16. We worked in two directions: 4) We studied the induced anisotropy in pre-annealed samples, submitted to annealing in the range from 200 to 400 °C, under a tensile stress of 500MPa and without applied stress. From these resul ts we can separate a plastic and an anelastic component in the induced anisotropy. 5) In other, we studied the behavior of the MAE, for samples with and with and without applied tensile stress, in the range from 300 to 500 K. The results obtained show neither plastic nor anelastic effects on the activation energies of the processes involved in the MAE. On the other h~nd we can see a strong alteration in the intensity of the MAE, due the stress.

Dinâmica de Kondo em ferromagnetos itinerantes unidimensionais / Kondo dynamics in one-dimensional itinerant ferromagnets

Silveira, Hudson Pimenta 09 August 2013 (has links)
Itinerant ferromagnetism remains an elusive problem in Physics. The phenomenon arises from a competition between electronic interaction and many-body effects and cannot be treated perturbatively. Particularly in 1D, there are rigorous proofs that forbid ferromagnetic phase for lattice models with nearest-neighbours hopping only. In the last twenty years, however, models with hopping beyond nearest-neighbours were proposed in the literature and for which ferromagnetic phase was rigorously established. Virtually every proof of the existence of one-dimensional ferromagnets is done in an insulator phase (disregarding some pathological cases, such as infinite electronic repulsion). That motivated us to investigate the coupling between spin and charge sectors in the strongly interacting regime when we dope the system, introducing two Fermi points, pF and -pF. We found out, through perturbation theory, logarithmic singularities in the magnon selfenergy when its momentum is pF or -pF. To understand them, we derived an effective field theory for the scattering between magnons and spinless fermions (which represent the charge sector) close to these points. The effective model resembles the Kondo model, which describes a magnetic impurity locally coupled to a fermionic sea through spin exchange interaction. In our model, there is actually a pseudospin that indicates if a particle momentum is closest to pF or -pF and the magnon behaves as a mobile impurity. The impurity mobility leads to a fermionic dispersion relation that depends on the impurity pseudospin.

"Novos materiais magnéticos para imãs de alta performance" / New magnetic materials for high performance magnets

Murakami, Regina Keiko 19 September 2005 (has links)
The aim of the present work was to develop new improved magnetic materials suitable for permanent magnets. Two kinds of materials were studied: (Nd,Sm)5(Fe,MT)17 based materials, were MT is a transition metal and, (Nd,Pr)FeB nanocrystalline materials (exchange spring magnets) with TiC additions. The 5:17 alloys were melted in an arc melting furnace followed by a long annealing (at least 30 days). We tried to improve the magnetic properties by means of chemical substitutions (Ti, Co, Mn, etc.) and/or by addition of interstitial atoms of deuterium or nitrogen. The samples were characterized by means of thermomagnetic analysis (TMA), low temperature magnetometry, X ray and neutron diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The main results were: a) increase of Tc temperature (up to 70 ºC) and; b) determination of interstitial sites for deuterium. (Nd,Pr)FeB alloys with TiC additions were melted in an arc melting furnace, being processed in a melt spinner system. After the samples were heat treated at different temperatures. The promissing literature results for Nd2Fe14B+TiC were also obtained for Pr2Fe14B + TiC, but not for systems composed by Pr2Fe14B and Fe3B phases with TiC additions. However, good results were obtained in systems composed by Pr2Fe14B and α-Fe with TiC additions, with 30% increase on coercive field values Hc, and 15% increase on (BH)max.

Efeitos de ordem de curto alcance na susceptibilidade paramagnética em sais antiferromagnéticos hidratados / Short-range order effects in the paramagnetic susceptibility in antiferromagnetic hydrated salts

Vianna, Sandra Sampaio 08 August 1980 (has links)
In this work we have studied the effect of short-range ordering on the paramagnetic susceptibility, for temperatures above the antiferro-paramagnetic transition in the following materials: CoCl2.6H2O, CoBr2.6H2O, NiCl2.4H2O, MnCl2.4H2O and MnBr2.4H2O. The properties of by these materials permit the investigation of the dependence of this effect with the value of the spin, with the dimensionality and the anisotropy of the magnetic system. A simple theoretical treatment, based on variational principle of free energy, is developed, which accounts for most of the features observed in our experimental studies.

Estudos das propriedades magnéticas e magnetorresistivas em válvulas de spin do tipo NiFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn / Studies of magnetic and magnetoresistive properties in spin valves of the type NiFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn

Vinicius Pena Coto Limeira 15 December 2017 (has links)
Spin Valves have been employed as magnetic sensors and used in random access memories, showing they are very important in terms of technological point of view. In this work, analyses of the magnetoresistance first order reversal curves (MR-FORC) have been used, as well as fittings of the magnetization and magnetoresistance hysteresis, to study the exchange-bias phenomena, magnetic anisotropies and magnetoresistance in spin valves. Sputtering has been used to the deposition of NiFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn, and Ta has been deposited as seed and buffer layers. A domain wall model (in the antiferromagnetic layer) taking into account the magnetic anisotropies and the interactions between the layers has been employed to fit the magnetization hysteresis. Some textures have been also introduced to take into account the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) grains dispersion (with Gaussian distributions) centered around the respective uniaxial anisotropy axes. However, to obtain good fits for some samples, it has been necessary to include an in-plane rotation of an angle of the both FM and AFM easy axes in relation to the field direction applied during the growing of the films. Good fits of the magnetization hysteresis have been obtained for all measured directions of the applied field. A new method based on the angular variation of the magnetoresistance to constant fields has been proposed to extract directly these angles. Reasonable agreements have been obtained between these angles and the corresponding ones extracted from the fits of the magnetization loops. Through the analyses of the MR-FORC and from the simulations indicated by the parameters (obtained from the fittings of magnetization loops), a direct relation between the interaction fields (and its uncertainties) and the exchange-bias fields of the grains of the distribution (extracted from the simulations, using the width of the distribution obtained from the magnetization fittings) has been identified. In summary, this analysis has showed that this technique allows to extract comparative information about the dispersion of the anisotropy axes of the FM and AFM grains around the uniaxial axis, which can be very import to the characterization of spin-valve based sensors. Besides, MR-FORC analyses have also indicated the presence of a threshold of discontinuity of the pinned NiFe layer at 27, showing a huge increase (above of the expected) to the sample at 25, and this unexpected increasing has corroborated with our hypothese. Simulations of the magnetoresistance loops have not been good, indicating that improvements should be included in the model employed to simulate these curves, obtained from the pinned and free angles of the NiFe layers. Concerning the case of the presence of misalignments of FM and AFM for some samples, it is still an open question, but in this work, we have found that this angle () is equal to 2.

In the chapter 3, we study ferromagnetic fluctuations on two types of bilayer triangular lattices by the single-band Hubbard model. We start from the tight-binding model to obtain energy spectrum, the density of sates, and the spin susceptibility. With finite Coulomb interaction turned on, we apply the random phase approximation and use the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method to study spin susceptibility for the two bilayer triangular lattices and make comparisons of their magnetic properties. The effects of the interlayer coupling is also examined in detail. / In the chapter 4, we addresses the issue of the ferromagnetism in graphene-based samples. To study magnetic correlations in graphene, we systematically carry out quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. In the filling region below the Van Hove singularity, the system shows a short-range ferromagnetic correlation, which is slightly strengthened by the on-site Coulomb interaction and markedly by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping integral. The ferromagnetic properties depend on the electron filling strongly, which may be manipulated by the electric gate. Due to its resultant high controllability of ferromagnetism, graphene-based samples may facilitate the new development of many applications. / In the chapter 5, we examined theoretically the magnetism of impurity adatoms in graphene by quantum Monte Carlo simulation technique based on Hirsch-Fye algorithm. When tuning the Fermi energy of graphene by gate voltage with available experiments, the values of occupancy and local moment for impurity can be changed. Furthermore, with medium and large hybridizations between impurity and graphene atoms, the local moment can be switched on and off by Kondo effects. We also use maximum entropy method to study the spectral density from Green's function for impurity, and we find very unconventional behaviors which are absolutely different from the cases in the normal metal. These signatures of spectral density enlarge the possibility for controlling the impurity magnetism by gate voltage. / In this research thesis, we mainly study three strongly correlated systems: Hubbard model in bilayer triangular lattice which corresponds to the real material of NaxCoO2 · yH 2O, strong-interaction electrons in graphene system and Anderson impurity in graphene.
