A presente pesquisa analisa a rela??o entre pr?ticas discursivas cat?licas e o lugar de Natal nos anos de 1910-1939. Neste sentido, perguntamos: teriam a festa de Nossa Senhora da Apresenta??o, a padroeira da cidade, e a Matriz, representada como um monumento, sido pr?ticas produtoras da cidade? Se sim, ent?o qual sentido foi imaginado a partir da?? Nosso objetivo, neste estudo, ? analisar a associa??o entre institui??o religiosa, cren?a e lugar, tomando como ponto de partida a conjuntura hist?rica na qual o Brasil passou por um momento de transforma??o social, cujo princ?pio moderno n?o nasceu do catolicismo. De tal modo, buscamos compreender a rea??o da Igreja Cat?lica frente a esse novo momento hist?rico, atrav?s do uso do simbolismo da padroeira, de marcos memorias, cortejos sagrados, sensibiliza??o e constru??o de uma caracter?stica para a cidade por meio da f? cat?lica. As respostas para as nossas quest?es foram encontradas nos discursos presentes nas p?ginas dos peri?dicos A Rep?blica, 1910-1939, A Ordem, 1935-1939, e o cap?tulo A Matriz de Natal, escrito pelo potiguar Nestor dos Santos Lima, na revista do Instituto Hist?rico e Geogr?fico do Rio Grande do Norte. Em suma, problematizamos a rela??o entre religiosidade e cidade. Al?m disto, pretendemos contribuir para o conhecimento das trajet?rias de forma??o da cidade de Natal no in?cio do s?culo XX. / In this research, we perform a analysis about the relation between Catholicism and the city of Natal in the first half of the 20th century, a period in which Brazil lived a historical moment, marked by the consolidation of a new political system and urban expansion. The present research analyzes the relation between catholic discursive practices and the place of Natal in the years of 1910-1939. In this sense, we ask: were the Nossa Senhora da Apresenta??o's festivity, the patron saint of the city, and the Matriz, represented as a monument, practices that produced the city? If so, then what sense was imagined thenceforth? Our objective, in this study, is to analyze the association between religious institution, belief and place, taking as a starting point the historical conjuncture in which Brazil passed through a moment of social transformation, whose modern principle was not born in Catholicism. In this way, we seek to understand the reaction of the Catholic Church before this new historical moment, through the use of the symbolism of the patron saint, memorial marks, sacred processions, sensitization and construction of a characteristic for the city by means of catholic faith. The answers to our questions were found in the speeches contained in the pages of the journals A Rep?blica, 1910-1939, A Ordem, 1935-1939, and the chapter A Matriz de Natal, written by the potiguar Nestor dos Santos Lima, for the journal of the Instituto Hist?rico e Geogr?fico do Rio Grande do Norte. In short, we problematize the relation between religiosity and city. Moreover, we intend to contribute to the knowledge of the trajectories of the city's formation in the beginning of the 20th century.
