Environmental characteristics around hotspots of pedestrian-automobile collision in the city of Austin

Geng, Sunxiao 12 September 2014 (has links)
The increasingly serious pedestrian safety issue in the City of Austin aroused the concern. Other than conducting quantitative analysis at aggregate level via collecting and examining the secondary data extracted from the existing datasets, the authors shifted towards the disaggregate level analysis, focusing on twenty-six hotspots of pedestrian collisions via mixed method research. Qualitative data was collected in the field survey to precisely capture the contextual features of collision locations, and was interpreted and coded as explanatory variables for the quantitative analysis. Instead of the frequency of pedestrian collision, crash rate measured by incident count per million pedestrians was the dependent variable to identify the factors truly influencing the pedestrian safety issue, not just the total number of walkers. The stepwise bivariate analysis and negative binomial regression examined the association between pedestrian collision rate and independent variables. Finally, the average block length, speed limit posted, sidewalk condition, and the degree of proximity to major pedestrian attractors were statistically significant factors correlating with the pedestrian collision risk. / text

New Exploration in the Chitral Valley, Pakistan: An Extension of the Gandharan Grave Culture

Batt, Catherine M., Ali, I., Coningham, Robin A.E., Young, R.L. January 2002 (has links)
No / New survey in the Chitral Valley has doubled the number of recorded Gandharan Grave culture sites in the region and extended their geographical range. The numbers and location of sites indicates that the Gandharan Grave culture was well established in the Chitral valley, suggesting that the valley may have been central to this cultural development, rather than marginal.

Back Pocket Archaeology : An Analysis of Smartphone 3D Technology for Archaeological Field Survey in Sweden / Med arkeologi i bakfickan : Analys av smartphone 3D-teknik för arkeologisk fältinventering i Sverige

Halvardsson, Alicia January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine the viability of this technology as a realistic archaeological field tool and discuss what advantages, limitations, and implications this technology has for the purposes of archaeological field survey in Sweden. To determine this, five targets in Stockholm County already professionally surveyed and documented, have been scanned with LiDAR as well as two also with photogrammetry via smartphone apps on an iPhone 12 Pro Max to compare the scanning process and the respective results for each target. After analysing targets in Angarn, Fresta, Sollentuna, Österhaninge, and Kärrtorp parishes, a post-phenomenological perspective was applied to each model to discuss their potential as technologically mediated human experiences. An additional sixth target was scanned to compare against other 3D techniques. This study has determined that the photogrammetry tools in the apps provided the best conditions and results for use in archaeological field survey documentation while the LiDAR tools have room for improvement as a professional tool.

ConcepÃÃo de MÃtodo Simplificado de Levantamento e AnÃlise de Defeitos em Vias NÃo-Pavimentadas / CONCEPTION OF A SIMPLIFIED METHOD OF SURVEY AND ANALYSIS FOR UNPAVED ROADS DISTRESS

Francisco Rafael Ribeiro da Silva 28 November 2007 (has links)
The implantation of the management systems has always been a challenge for the functioning parts which are responsible for the roads of a region. Such challenge becomes even bigger when the implantation of this kind of management has to be applied to roads which are not paved. It is important to consider, in this case, the bigger extension when compared with roads with some kind of overlay. We may also consider the scarcity of studies and works published in this area which complicates even more its practical application. The present work aims to contribute for the arrangement of the pavement management system (PMS), focusing its first stage, the field survey, besides the posterior analysis of the data obtained. We have as a basis the research accomplished in the USA as the ones by Eaton et al. (1987), we also tried to adapt and innovate new techniques of field survey, aiming to facilitate the achievement of data which must be inserted in methods of evaluation of the bearing conditions of the unpaved roads. The roads AQZ-01, AQZ-02 and AQZ-03, located in the district of Aquiraz, were chosen for the accomplishment of this research, once they had already been used in previous works which followed the same line of research, the management of unpaved roads. As a conclusion for this work, we hope to close this research cycle which was started in 2003 with the studies of Correia (2003), Moreira (2003) and Nunes (2003) and were recaptured in 2006 by Almeida (2006) and Santana (2006); each of them working at a specific stage of a PMS directed to the unpaved roads and that is applicable to the reality of the roads in Cearà and which can also be used by the municipal organs, helping in the management of the roads in general as well as of the unpaved ones.

Vývoj keramiky Šerabádské oázy v jižním Uzbekistánu / The development of ceramics in the Sherabad oasis, South Uzbekistan

Kobierská, Markéta January 2017 (has links)
The thesis' main topic concerns issues of ceramic typologies of the field survey assemblages. The case study subject is represented by an assemblage originating from the Sherobod oasis, Uzbekistan, a significant district of ancient Bactria and a sphere of the Czech araeological mission's activities. The thesis aspires to define in theory, what are the most convenient features of a typology of heterogeneous and numerous assemblages. The work consists of two main sections. The textual section is theoretical. Attention is paid to the fundamentals of categorical thinking and concept of fuzzy logic is proposed for broader application in archaeological typologies. The second section presents an extensive, previously unpublished catalogue of pottery finds withdrawn within the activities of the Institute for Classical Archaeology, Prague, conducted by PhDr. Ladislav Stančo, Ph.D.

BEAVER ACTIVITY AND FLORA SURVEY IN CHAIN O'LAKES STATE PARK, NOBLE COUNTY INDIANA

Patrick Jaymes Mayo (17582628) 10 December 2023 (has links)

North American beaver are ecosystem and habitat altering mammals with a wide distribution in North America. Beaver are associated with bodies of fresh water while utilizing riparian habitat by foraging on woody and herbaceous, terrestrial and aquatic vegetation, as well as creating lodges, dams, dens, and scent mounds. Chain O’Lakes State Park was chosen as a study area for surveying beaver activity and woody species communities. The aim of the study was to better understand the relationship between beaver, and specifically, the woody vegetation in their foraging and home range. There is a large swath of habitat that beaver can utilize and alter within Chain O’Lakes State Park including the lakes, streams, and forests that attract visitors. The factors that have been found to influence beaver utilization in Chain O’Lakes State Park (and North America at large) are woody species community composition, abundance of heavily preferred woody species, as well as a combination of both an absence of predators and an abundance of aquatic vegetation. Based on the distribution of heavily, occasionally, and rarely preferred woody species across the understory (new individuals) and overstory (mature individuals) stratum an inference can be made that most of the riparian habitat around the lakes will continue to and/or shift into a higher proportion of species that beaver heavily select. A minority of the habitat shall shift away from those species and towards rarely and/or occasionally selected species. I will provide USDA APHIS Wildlife Services that play a wildlife management role in Chain O’Lakes State Park with the survey information detailing how beaver and their structures interact with the ecosystem, hypothesized methods for preserving the woody species that are targeted by beaver foraging within the park, and supplementary information that may aid in maintaining the riparian habitats for the benefit of park’s biodiversity and wildlife persistence while continuing to provide an enriched experience within Northwest Indiana with the potential to inform the greater collection of parks and maintained land at large.
