Between Figure and Ground: Articulating Heterotopia in the Suburban ParadoxSimon, Holly 19 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis focuses on exploring figure-ground within the
amorphous suburban green space of Calgary, Alberta. It
is an edgeless prairie city, flooded with unused space and
tethered by freeways that stretch toward the infinite horizon
beyond the mountains. The incessant need to own and parcel
nature has created a landscape of excess where both
city and nature are a blur at the edge of our distracted vision.
Using expanded defi nitions of figure-ground as a design
methodology, this thesis attempts to better understand
this paradox and to act in its middle ground. Articulating a
heterotopia between the ideal with the real, the public and
the private, the natural and the artificial, this thesis explores
a new imaginative space, delicately but firmly tethered to
suburban ground and its elusive horizon. The results manifest
in unexpected geometries on a thin strip of park between
a backyard and a freeway in Calgary.

HIGH LINEARITY UNIVERSAL LNA DESIGNS FOR NEXT GENERATION WIRELESS APPLICATIONS2013 December 1900 (has links)
Design of the next generation (4G) systems is one of the most active and important area of research and development in wireless communications. The 2G and 3G technologies will still co-exist with the 4G for a certain period of time. Other applications such as wireless LAN (Local Area Network) and RFID are also widely used. As a result, there emerges a trend towards integrating multiple wireless functionalities into a single mobile device. Low noise amplifier (LNA), the most critical component of the receiver front-end, determines the sensitivity and noise figure of the receiver and is indispensable for the complete system. To satisfy the need for higher performance and diversity of wireless communication systems, three LNAs with different structures and techniques are proposed in the thesis based on the 4G applications.
The first LNA is designed and optimized specifically for LTE applications, which could be easily added to the existing system to support different standards. In this cascode LNA, the nonlinearity coming from the common source (CS) and common gate (CG) stages are analyzed in detail, and a novel linear structure is proposed to enhance the linearity in a relatively wide bandwidth. The LNA has a bandwidth of 900MHz with the linearity of greater than 7.5dBm at the central frequency of 1.2GHz. Testing results show that the proposed structure effectively increases and maintains linearity of the LNA in a wide bandwidth. However, a broadband LNA that covers multiple frequency ranges appears more attractive due to system simplicity and low cost. The second design, a wideband LNA, is proposed to cover multiple wireless standards, such as LTE, RFID, GSM, and CDMA. A novel input-matching network is proposed to relax the tradeoff among noise figure and bandwidth. A high gain (>10dB) in a wide frequency range (1-3GHz) and a minimum NF of 2.5dB are achieved. The LNA consumes only 7mW on a 1.2V supply. The first and second LNAs are designed mainly for the LTE standard because it is the most widely used standard in the 4G communication systems. However, WiMAX, another 4G standard, is also being widely used in many applications. The third design targets on covering both the LTE and the WiMAX. An improved noise cancelling technique with gain enhancing structure is proposed in this design and the bandwidth is enlarged to 8GHz. In this frequency range, a maximum power gain of 14.5dB and a NF of 2.6-4.3dB are achieved. The core area of this LNA is 0.46x0.67mm2 and it consumes 17mW from a 1.2V supply.
The three designs in the thesis work are proposed for the multi-standard applications based on the realization of the 4G technologies. The performance tradeoff among noise, linearity, and broadband impedance matching are explored and three new techniques are proposed for the tradeoff relaxation. The measurement results indicate the techniques effectively extend the bandwidth and suppress the increase of the NF and nonlinearity at high frequencies. The three proposed structures can be easily applied to the wideband and multi-standard LNA design.

Peer influence in figure drawing as related to age, sex, artistic prestige, and social prestige of elementary school childrenGaarder, Larry E. January 1973 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the amount of peer influence elementary school students exert on each other during an assigned drawing task. Further, the purpose was to determine the relationship of peer influence to other factors: sex, grade level, artistic prestige, and social prestige.Five major questions involving elementary school age peers were under investigation. Hypotheses were developed to determine whether significant relationships existed during an assigned drawing task between peer influence and (1) pairs of boys, pairs of girls, and opposite sex pairs, (2) same sex pairs and opposite sex pairs, (3) peers at various grade levels, (4) artistic prestige, and (5) social prestige.The sample of this study consisted of 656 elementary school students. The subjects ranged from kindergarten through sixth grade and were representative of elementary school students of Mankato, Minnesota.The data used were collected from the sample by involving the subjects in two drawing sessions and, with the exception of the kindergarten subjects, one short session used in the execution of a sociogram. The drawings were judged for Quality Scale scores and peer influence scores. These scores were recorded along with sociogram information, indicating artistic and social prestige, and personal data.Analysis of variance was computed along with subsequent t tests to determine the relationships between peer influence and boy pairs, girl pairs, and opposite sex pairs. To test the significance of statistics pertinent to the relationship of peer influence to same sex pairs and opposite sex pairs, t tests were employed.The relationship between peer influence and grade level was subjected to analysis of variance along with follow-up t tests. Statistics indicating the relationship between peer influence and artistic and social prestige were reported by correlation coefficients.A significant relationship was found between peer influence and sex pairing. Further relationships of significance were found between peer influence and pairs of boys with pairs of girls, and boy pairs with opposite sex pairs. The relationship between pairs of girls and opposite sex pairs did not reach a level of significance.The amount of peer influence which same sex pairs exerted was found to be significantly greater than that exerted by opposite sex pairs. There was also found to be a significant relationship between grade level and peer influence, with peer influence diminishing in intensity from kindergarten through grade six. Statistics reporting the relationship between peer influence and artistic prestige indicated a positive significant relationship while the statistics reporting the relationship between peer influence and social prestige were not significant.With reference to the findings of this study, the ensuing conclusions relative to peer influence investigation in this research are drawn. Pairs of elementary school age boys are more likely to be influenced by each other in the performance of a task than are pairs of elementary school age girls. Opposite sex pairs are still less influenced by each other than are boy pairs or girl pairs.Subjects whose peers consider them high in artistic prestige exert more peer influence during art activities than subjects who are not so rated by peers. Subjects who are high in social prestige are not significantly influential during the same art activity. The present study also concludes that the influence of elementary school age peers need not accelerate with age but can diminish in intensity from kindergarten through sixth grade.
