Chování mazaných kontaktů za vysokých skluzů / Behaviour of lubricated contacts under high-sliding conditions

The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the influence of individual operating parameters on thickness and temperature distribution of elastohydrodynamic contact under high slip ratio. In this work, the distribution of the lubricant film thickness is determined by optical interferometry and the temperature mapping in EHL contact is realized by infrared microscopy. Two optical filters were used to separate the radiation of contact surfaces and oil. Temperature of disk surface was measured using a sapphire disk with chromium layer that shielded radiation from ball and oil. The experimental device was modified to simulate the conditions of the various vectors between entrainment and sliding speed. The results extend existing information about behavior of EHL contact under high slip ratio conditions.

Master’s thesis deals with development of software application to calculate contact pressure in eleastohydrodynamic lubricated contact in order to use previously obtained data of the lubricating film thickness. The introduction contains a short overview of methods used for the study of film thickness and contact pressure. Custom work includes a contact pressure solution derived from a film thickness, a description of the developed software and analysis of algorithms used for its compilation. The last part deals with the verification of algorithm, application of software for calculating the contact pressure on the rough surface and analysis of the results. The conclusion includes a summary and possible application of software in practice.

This diploma thesis deals with the influence of the surface texturing of non-conformal surfaces at the friction coefficient. In the work were made adjustment of experimental apparatus for measuring friction in the contact between ball and flat disk. Friction coefficient was calculated by the size of the torque on the ball, which was measured by the torque sensor. For recording and processing signal from the sensor was designed software that makes it possible to measure the coefficient of friction for selected conditions (loading of contact, speed of rubbing surfaces and rolling-sliding conditions). Experiments were carried out with smooth and textured ball, glass, and steel disc at different speeds and rolling-sliding conditions. To determine the effect of the influence of the surface texturing at the friction coefficient the size of the coefficient of friction of smooth and textured ball was compared. It was found that the microtexture of the friction coefficient has little effect.

The purpose of this thesis is to reveal production mechanisms of lubrication films between non-conformal surfaces in situations, when is not possible to designate lubrication regime as fully flooded elastohydrodynamic contact. Under certain conditions of lubrication volume, rolling speeds, temperatures, lubrication properties or loads could lubrication film decrease under values determined by fully flooded formulas. This regime is designated as starvation at it includes risk of increased wear. In this thesis the methodology and the new simulator of starving contact are described. Obtained film thickness results are compared with existing numerical models.

Diploma thesis deals with elastohydrodynamic lubrication of point contacts, which surfaces are influenced by topography and velocity vector of one rubbing surface is misaligned. Author summarizes knowledge of previously published research articles, which fundamentally enrich current state of knowledge. Diploma thesis contains experimental measurement results of the film thickness and the way of lubrication film formation in elliptical contact for different ellipticity parameters, kinds of rubbing surfaces and angles of the velocity vector. New findings have helped to better understand the behaviour of highly loaded lubricated contacts taking place in machine components and completed the current state of knowledge with results that can be used in next thorough study of this issue.

This diploma thesis deals with experimental study of the effect of surface grooves on distribution of lubricant film in elastohydrodynamic lubricated point contact. Lubricant film thickness was measured by ball-on-disc apparatus using an optical interferometry technique - thin film colorimetric interferometry. The effects of groove geometry, lubricant and operating conditions were studied in this diploma thesis. The effects of these variables are evaluated based on newly suggested parameter Rgi (groove influence ratio). Groove influence ratio is defined as an influenced film thickness influenced by groove divided by film thickness for smooth surfaces.

This thesis deals with the experimental study of the formation of the lubricating film used for sintered metal parts impregnated with oil. The thickness of the lubricating film in a line contact is measured by the method of optical interferometry of thin lubricating films. In this thesis, the effects of various operating parameters on the formation of the lubricating film are described. The usage of impregnated lubricant leads to insufficient supply of lubricant to the contact. Individual results are significantly influenced by the degree of flooding of the contact area.

Gradation-Based Framework for Asphalt Mixtures

Asphalt mixture microstructure is formed by aggregates, bitumen binder and air voids. Aggregates make for up to 90% of the mixtures volume and the structure formed by them will depend mostly on their size distribution and shape. The study presented in this thesis has as main objective to develop a framework that allows the characterization of asphalt mixtures based on the aggregates gradation and its impact on pavement performance. Moreover, the study aims to identify the range of aggregate sizes which form the load carrying structure, called Primary Structure, and determine its quality. The method has been developed as a numerical procedure based on packing theory of spheres. Parameters like porosity, coordination number and disruption factor of the Primary Structure; and a binder distribution parameter for the different sub-structures have been used to evaluate the quality of the load carrying structure and predict the impact on several failure modes. The distribution of bitumen binder has been derived from a geometrical model which relates porosity of the mixture with film thickness of particles considering the overlapping reduction as the film grows. The model obtained is a closer approximation to a physical characteristic of the compacted mixture separated according to different elements of the structure. The framework has been evaluated on several field and laboratory mixtures and predictions have been made about their rutting performance and moisture resistance. The calculated parameters have compared favourably with the performances reported from the field and laboratory testing. The developed gradation analysis framework has proven to be a tool to identify those mixtures with a poor rutting performance based on the gradation of the aggregates. The Gradation - Based Framework has satisfactory distinguished between good and bad performance of asphalt mixtures when related to permanent deformation and moisture damage. The calculated parameters have allowed identifying and understanding the main mechanisms and variables involved in permanent deformation and moisture damage of asphalt mixtures. The developed model can be used as a tool to determine the optimal gradation to assure good performance for hot mix asphalt pavements. / QC 20120626

Measurements of Film Flow Rate in Heated Tubes with Various Axial Power Distributions

Measurements of film mass flow rate for annular, diabatic steam-water flow in tubes are presented. The measurements were carried out with four axial power distributions and at several axial positions at conditions typical for boiling water reactors, i.e. 7 MPa pressure and total mass flux in a range from 750 to 1750 kg/m2s. The results show that the influence of the axial power distribution on the dryout power corresponds to a consistent tendency in the film flow rate and that the film tends to zero when dryout is approached. Furthermore it is demonstrated that two selected phenomenological models of annular flow well predict the present data. A model for additional entrainment due to boiling is shown to degrade the predictions. / QC 20101108
