The use of Digital Visual Effects in contemporary TV-series : An analysis of the use of digital visual effects as a narrative device in the television series Doctor Who, Defiance and Terra Nova

In this thesis the argument of a new visual language as a narrative device will be discussed and looked at, by analyzing four different TV-series in the science-fiction genre: Terra Nova 2011, Defiance 2013-, Doctor Who 1963 – 1989 and Doctor Who 2005-. It will be possible to see the use of digital visual effects as a narrator in the image. To do this one main question has been asked and to be able to answer that question a framework model has been created, consisting of seven different questions: How are DVFx used as a visual language in the TV-series? What key elements drive the TV-series forward? What influence did DVFx have on the TV-series? How is DVFx used in the series as a narrator? What does DVFx represent in the image? Could the series have been created without DVFx? Techno-enhancement, visual language or hybrid?

SETTINGS+ is a performative building. The construction of the building should reflect the structure of a stage; with its tross system, dedicated to the stage technique. The interior walls and floors of the building creates a scenography; curtains and trousers. The building itself is a scene in the landscape. With its facade, the activity in general is visible even to those who are outside of the house and can be seen from the street, field or chapel as nearest neighbor. In SETTINGS+ film and stage productions are created. The various parts of the production; from receiving materials, storing materials, manufacturing scenographies in the workshop, assembling scenographies and staging stage environments should be made possible by the architecture and offer flexibility. Multiple staging can be run at the same time. The studio/stage can be both closed for a film production but also open with public performances. The different parts of the production is visible to visitors. Many spaces can be used both by staff and visitors. Where the rooms are intended only for those who work in the house, there is an openness that allows visitors to get an insight into the production process. A make-up can be seen from the other side of the building, an entrance into the stage can be passed at close range in the scissor staircase wihtout disturbing. / SETTINGS+ är en performativ byggnad. Byggnadens konstruktion ska spegla strukturen av en scen; med sitt tross-system, dedikerad scentekniken. Byggnadens inre väggar och våningar skapar en scenografi, ridåer och byxor. Byggnaden i sig är en scen i landskapet. Med sin glasfasad är verksamheten i stort är synlig även för dem som befinner sig utanför huset, från gatan, åkern eller kapellet som närmsta granne.  I SETTINGS+ skapas film- och scenproduktioner. Produktionens olika delar; från att ta emot material, förvara material, tillverka scenografier i verkstaden, montera scenografier och iscensätta scenmiljöer ska möjliggöras av arkitekturen och erbjuda flexibilitet. Flera iscensättnigar kan vara igång samtidigt. Studion/Scenen kan vara både sluten för en filmproduktion men också och öppen med publika föreställningar.  Produktionsgången är synlig för besökarna. Många rumsligheter brukas av både personal och besökare. Där rummen är avsedda endast för de som arbetar i huset finns en öppenhet som gör att besökarna får en inblick i produktionsgången. En sminkning går att se från andra sidan byggnaden, en entré in på scen går att passera på nära håll i en saxtrappa utan att störa.
