January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: This work aims at presenting a critical reflexion on two explanation models found in Cognitive Science, that is the functionalist and systemic ones. The first has epistemologically directed traditional researches in Cognitive Science with regard to the comprehension of cognitive abilities. The second constitutes an innovative variant adopted by Dynamic Cognitive Science. By indicating the changes in the investigating course, from the first model to the second one, we will approach the theoretical foundations of each of those models thus dealing with their main ontological assumptions. / Mestre

Rio, Sinomar Ferreira do. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: Understanding the organization of life through an evolutionist view, that is, naturalistic, we found opportune to emphasize the issue that involves the necessity that Cognitive Sciences have on modeling as a challenge for creating an artificial system capable of constituting itself and of evolving, movement capacities like human beings'. What we mean by movement capacities is to create a system capable of creating itself as an autonomous being by just creating its environment necessities of interaction with the milieu, guiders of its movement in space. Notwithstanding, to be reasonable that an artificial system performs movements that reflect the living nature of movement, what we search to focus here is the capacity of this system to face organization mechanisms, intended in robotic structures, so as to constitute, by itself, other adaptative mechanisms capable of performing movements determinate by autonomous organization necessities in space. We bring to light this issue, having some considerations that System Theory estimates as fundamental for thinking life in its organizative dimension, in which complexity is constituted as the nature of its organization and differentiates itself from the events that occur according to the law of linear cause and effect. Causality, in this theoretical context, is conceived as circular, in which events are transformed and determinate in their time ordination and variation. Life, in its organizative activity, being a complex nature, is introduced as own order of its movements. As an effect of interactive processes, life evolves, in its capacities of interaction in space, and in assimilating by the milieu the events that are constituted, interactingly, as action environment. / Mestre

Sobre as causas evolutivas da cognição humana /

Costa, Otávio Barduzzi Rodrigues da. January 2009 (has links)
The human species displays peculiar cognitive abilities that includes continuous learning capacity, symbolic language and self-consciousness. Which evolutionary factors could have engendered this condition? In this work, we discuss evolutionary facts and conjectures from Cognitive Neuroanthropology, suggesting a configuration of several factors - as the adoption of bipedalism, use of rudimentary tools, the emergence of language and social cooperation - in origin of human cognition. An explanation of the process of human evolution could then be achieved from the operation of a mechanism of circular causality, by which incipient developments of technique, language and sociability would progressively cause more complex developments of the same kinds of activity, leading to the sophisticated forms of technology, communication and human relations found in the contemporary epoch / Mestre

January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: This thesis has two aims: the first is to discuss epistemological presuppositions underlying the internalist conception of mind that emphasizes the representational mediation between a knowing subject and the world. The second consists in proposing and debating the Epistemological Hypothesis (H), according to which there is a Direct Perception of Invariances in Social-Cultural Behavior. At first the methodology of Cartesian analysis and synthesis is discussed, questioning its adequacy to the study of action-perception. Special attention is giving to Ryle’s criticism of the Cartesian method of analysis that allows the generation of categorical mistakes, applied to the study of perceptual knowledge. An alternative to representational perception is shown to be the Theory of Direct Perception (TPD), proposed by Gibson, which will be applied to the analysis of socialcultural behavior. Some difficulties are discovered during this project; among them is the problem of personal autonomy. A possible solution for that problem is to emphasize the relational variances between individuals and their environment, these variances occur together with the structural and transformational invariances. The invariants as well as variants form the specifics of the interaction between individual and environment, and thereby shape the personal autonomy. / Doutor

January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: It is na old thing the human concern about knowledge related questions, including discussions on its origin, its learning, about our capacity to utilize it and about specific characteristics of the human cognition. That concern remounts to the ancient greek philosophers (2.500 B.C.), developing itself later from the approach of Epistemology, originated in the occidental Philosophy, and more recently from the Functionalism, that makes part of the studies of Philosophy of Mind and of Cognitive Science. This last approach, particularly, contributed to appearing of research programs that try to understand the function of the human mind with the help of the computer. The Cognitive Science has strong relation with research in Artificial Intelligence, and both areas have been growing since the 1950 decade. More recently, from the decade 1980 on, a new area of atudies appeared, formed by researches in Artificial Life, that work with the possibility of synthesis of alive entities, by artificial means, and sice then has been attracting the attention of researchers interested in the study of Cognition. While Cognitive Science has strict relations with the Philosophy and the Psychology, Artifiical life has a strong inspiration in the Biology. In this work, we tried to investigate the meeting between these subjects, and their research programs, considering the possibilities of the contribution to the study of the human cognition, by means of an integrated approach of these areas. / Mestre
