Information node : converting Pretoria’s old fire station into public space

Uys, Susan Sureen 22 April 2008 (has links)
In an urban context, architecture and landscape architecture co-exist as part of the structure of the city. In the same manner, interior architecture exists as part of an architectural envelope, and product design as an integral part of the interior. This study explores the relationship between these design disciplines and their interdependence; none of them can be practiced optimally in isolation. As this thesis deals with interior architecture, the influence of and the response to other fields of design are considered and investigated, setting the parameters for the resolution of the design framework. The objective of the thesis is to design a tourism and information centre for Tshwane. The shortcomings of the tourism industry in the city are identified in Chapter Two, and the tourism field studied in depth in Chapter Three. The conclusions from these chapters serve as generators for the functional design process. The site of the Old Fire Station Building was chosen for both its potential and its inadequacies. Its physical attributes, historical importance and its critical role in the urban context of the CBD and the Museum Park District are discussed in Chapter Four. Chapter Five deals with the design philosophy and approach to creating a successful public space. Precedents are analytically examined in Chapter Six and alternatives are explored, setting up requirements and guidelines for the design intervention. In Chapter Seven, design strategies are defined and consequently employed. The progression of the design from general concept to specific end product is illustrated visually. Attention is focused on two parts of the building: the information area (Portion A) and the café (Portion B). In Chapter Eight, Portion A is further developed on a technical and tectonic level, zooming in on the construction of the information reception box. The study concludes with the technical documentation contained in Chapter Nine. The study relies throughout on the application of the concepts of placemaking through the layering, defining and containing of space, and contrast the existing with the proposed intervention. / Dissertation (MInt(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Architecture / unrestricted

Sorunda Brandstation / Sorunda Fire Station

Marend Segersten, John January 2023 (has links)
The project aims to construct a new hybrid building in Sorunda, located in northwestern Nynäshamn, with improved conditions for more efficient operations and an enhanced quality of life between emergencies. The building will house a fire station and include additional facilities such as a sports hall, a gym, a café, and a larger residential area within the fire station. The project also intends to emphasize the central location of the fire station in the community, situated between the historically significant focal point, the church, and the currently prominent meeting place, the Coop store with a pharmacy, postal services, and other important services. The fire station aims to serve as a gathering place in Sorunda, forming a clear central axis through the community with three emphasized institutions. The communal part of the hybrid programme, which can also be utilized by the local residents, consists of communal meeting and event spaces, in addition to the gym, café, and sports hall, which also address the needs of the nearby school.

Layering the city : re-use of the old Pretoria Fire Station

Van Wyk, Isabel Mari 25 November 2011 (has links)
Due to considerations for sustainable development and urban sprawl we have to address the growing concern of abandoned buildings and cities. Underutilised buildings and urban spaces are the development sites of the future. This dissertation investigates the problems of underutilised buildings and cities, and by doing so aims to contribute to a good urban environment, “the good city” according to Stern (2003: 21). As a further challenge, many of these underutilised buildings were designed with abrupt thresholds and inward orientation, instantly divorcing them from the public domain. Therefore not only is the re-use of an existing building explored, but is the extension of the public realm into the building also investigated. The project addresses this extension of the public realm through layering as a tool and a design generator. The layered tectonic is applied through spatial, componential, material and transitional layering. The building chosen for the dissertation is the old Pretoria Central Fire Station. The new proposed programme is a Centre for Architecture. Site information: Programme: Centre for Architecture: includes exhibition space, auditorium, conference facilities, offices, library, archives, bookshop and restaurant. Site description: Old Pretoria Central Fire Station, 1912 Client: Client body consisting of SACAP and voluntary associations within the architecture profession Users: Professionals and students in the Built Environment industry, tourists and the general public Site Location: Erven 913 + 914 Address: 449 Bosman Street, c/o Minnaar Street, Pretoria CBD, South Africa Between African Window and City Hall GPS coordinates: 25°45’12.99”S, 28°11’8.61”E / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

Hasičská stanice / Fire station

Horváthová, Radka January 2022 (has links)
The topic of the diploma thesis is the elaboration of project documentation for the construction of a fire station with almost zero energy consumption. The building will serve as a fire station type P4 with the scope of the JPO I unit - a unit of the fire department with a territorial scope, usually within 20 minutes drive from the place of deployment. The designed building is a detached object with two above-ground and one underground floor. The building is designed as a reinforced concrete skeleton. It consists of two operating units. The administrative and operational part has three floors. In this part, the main entrance to the building is on the 1st floor, oriented on the south side. The technical rooms of the fire department are located on the first floor and are functionally connected to the administrative part. Exit garages, a car wash and a dryer are also attached to it. Prior to the elaboration of the project, a visit to the regional fire station in Trnava and a consultation with the director of this station took place regarding the needs and requirements of the fire department.
