Vertical Urbanity: Urban Dwelling in an Age of Programmatic PromiscuityPanacci, Michael January 2011 (has links)
Welcome to CityPlace.
Thirty-five hectares of formerly unoccupied rail-lands in downtown Toronto are currently undergoing a transformation into an instant neighbourhood. Eventually, CityPlace will be the home to over 15,000 people within 23 buildings, sequestered by the Gardiner Expressway on its southern border and by the still functioning rail-lines on its northern border, it is truly an island of suburban stacked living which is at once surrounded and yet at a distance from downtown Toronto. In CityPlace we are witnessing what the Belgian philosopher Lieven De Cauter describes as the rise of the capsular civilization.
Impossible to ignore, condominiums have become the dominant form of new housing in the city of Toronto; a process that has been driven by demographics, political imperative and most of all by the pursuit of profits in the high-stakes game of real-estate development. But lost in this torrent of development is a genuine dialogue about the city we are building.
This thesis explores the current state of condo development in downtown Toronto; from the myriad of political, economic and physical factors that have led to Toronto’s vernacular condo typology to the marketing onslaught that targets the base consumerist hyper-individual within all of us and aims to hide the fact that these buildings are more similar than distinct. From the optimistic aims of a city council which seeks to achieve civic benefits from increased density, to the cynical de urbanizing and social polarization that the type typically brings into the downtown.
The thesis explores the promise of downtown condominium living and the hybridisation of programme that accompanies the rising real estate values of the downtown core. Programmatic promiscuity and complexity are exploited to bring different user-types from the outside city into the tower. With its unique vertical properties
and inherent density, the residential high-rise tower presents new opportunities for urban collective spaces. From
introvert to extrovert, the new condo becomes a catalyst for urbanity in the instant neighbourhood of CityPlace.

The project aims to construct a new hybrid building in Sorunda, located in northwestern Nynäshamn, with improved conditions for more efficient operations and an enhanced quality of life between emergencies. The building will house a fire station and include additional facilities such as a sports hall, a gym, a café, and a larger residential area within the fire station. The project also intends to emphasize the central location of the fire station in the community, situated between the historically significant focal point, the church, and the currently prominent meeting place, the Coop store with a pharmacy, postal services, and other important services. The fire station aims to serve as a gathering place in Sorunda, forming a clear central axis through the community with three emphasized institutions. The communal part of the hybrid programme, which can also be utilized by the local residents, consists of communal meeting and event spaces, in addition to the gym, café, and sports hall, which also address the needs of the nearby school.

Memory - Ness: The Collaboration Between a Library and MuseumDoughty, Kelsey 13 November 2009 (has links)
Picture a historical library and a historical art museum coming together to challenge the interaction between each other to help experience, explore, and discover the past within the present. While it sounds like a good idea, it is rare to see a library and museum under one roof.
With the increasing population of tourists looking to visit places and buildings that reconnect with history, there is a higher demand for places to be able to 're-live the past' through art and literature. People enjoy visiting places where history was made and where it becomes part of a city's identity. With modern developments taking over, historical buildings are beginning to disappear. Designing a library and museum partnership is a solution to creating two institutions under one roof while preserving the space usually needed for both institutions if built separately.
In order to challenge the idea of a hybrid building within a historical city, there needs to be an element of culture and historical remembrance that creates a shield against that city's potential loss of identity. Memory has become a key element in our true identity, becoming a form of support against erasure. It is that sense of culture and historical remembrance that will create recognition of things past.
In order to address Florida's historical culture, the proposed site will be located in St. John's County, which includes America's oldest city St. Augustine. There are many different historical periods in St. Augustine that create its current cultural atmosphere. It is important to choose an environment where historical events took place because it allows the memory process of a place to create past experiences to be shared with new experiences.
Through a methodology of the historical culture and conditions of the site, this thesis project will honor St. Augustine's culture by integrating the past with the present and creating a modern hybrid institution for the city. Furthermore, integrating the past with the present will allow users to enjoy St. Augustine as it used to be and as it currently is today.

Nickstadalens hus för hantverk och scenkonst / Nickstadalen's House of Crafts and Performing ArtsCarolusson Ahlin, Ebba January 2023 (has links)
Nickstadalen’s House of Crafts and Performing Arts is a proposal for a new hybrid building situated in Nickstadalen, an area on the west edge of central Nynäshamn. The site is an important node in Nynäshamn during the summer months because of its popular beach and camping. More permanent housing such as apartment buildings and villas frame the area. During winter the area is not as frequently visited. Therefore, the Railway Museum situated north of the camping grounds, is only open once a month during winter. The aim of the project is to create a hybrid building in Nynäshamn where the inhabitants can gather and practice or learn about crafts and of how to repair furniture and clothes etc. Moreover, it is a space to practice or experience performing arts. The workshops can be used by the public or by craftsmen to make backdrops, props and costumes for the performances. The building is placed next to the museum, an area which of current state is wasteland. Additionally, the aim is to make Nickstadalen an attractive area all year round and to create an entirety on the plot together with the existing museum.

Planta de reciclaje con parque temático / Recycling plant with theme parkFortunic Soriano, Fiorella Yesú 14 September 2019 (has links)
The project is a Recycling Plant: Eco Parque Tecnológica, for the Integration of Population, Industry and Environment. The project is a pilot plan for garbage management in our country and an adequate design of environmental industry, which has an urban space for integration of the population with the industry, a hybrid building. The main objective is the design of a waste collection, selection and separation plant, which includes opening to the city through spaces, green areas, and, at the same time, helping to disseminate knowledge related to recycling and care environmental, in addition to creating a more personal link between this industry and the user, all this is achieved by the custom inclusive design of the project where it integrates offices, industry and park. In addition, a better concept of industrial architecture would be shown, it will no longer be seen as the industry apart from everything but as the industry that is involved with a teaching and recreation environment, as well as being ecologically friendly.
The project is self-sustainable since a wastewater treatment plant is planned, with this there is water for maintenance of green areas and for the toilets of the park facilities, on the other hand, clean energy to supply the project facilities and Low maintenance materials and environmental impact. / Trabajo de suficiencia profesional

House of Waste / House of WasteStrömbäck, Miriam January 2021 (has links)
The Swedish industry and society are widely separated and it is more or less impossible to approach and observe our industries. The location of the industries far away from our cities, the lack of connection to the surrounding context, and the many signs of “no entry” do not only strengthen the idea of alienation - but also the belief that industry is something dangerous hazardous as well as negative for the environment and our societies. Aesthetics play an important role in reducing the negative associations with industrial buildings as well as integrating them into our communities. A less industrial appearance can make a more central location acceptable, which is beneficial for the efficiency and capacity of most plants. By creating an infrastructure regarding local energy production, using the local resources and giving our industrial buildings aesthetic consideration, the architecture can create a new type of belonging, purpose and pride in our communities. The aim of the project has been to redefine the relationship between waste, energy production and architecture. House of Waste investigates how a biogas plant, not only can house a social program - but be a public building at its core.
