The problem of this study is an investigation of the development of social adjustment in thirty-three first-grade pupils in Gainesville, Texas, during 1949-1950. The purpose of the study is to determine each child's total readiness status at the beginning of the investigation, surround each with socializing experiences appropriate to his need, and then determine whether measurable benefits appear to result from his participation in the specific activities designed for social development.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the use of filmstrips as an aid in teaching reading to a group of first grade children in the Tom Bean Consolidated School. A further purpose, and probably the most important as it deals with the ultimate objective of education, is the effect that visual aid has upon the behavior of boys and girls.

The purpose of the study was five-fold: (1) to discover what criteria have been set up by recognized authorities for teaching dull-normal children; (2) to determine the interests and needs of the dull-normal children under consideration; (3) to determine their vocabulary range; (4) to produce interesting, easy reading material for them and to determine their response to the reading material produced, based upon their activities and interests; and (5) to recommend a reading program for the dull-normal children in the Memphis, Texas, public school in the future.

This was a study designed to investigate the effects of three independent variables in first-grade reading instruction on reading achievement and perceptual development. The independent variables included initial readiness level, type of instructional method, and sex of pupil. The major purpose of this study was to use an experimental setting to determine the relative effects of a multi-sensory perceptual training program combined with a basal-instruction program, as contrasted to an entirely conventional basal-reading program, on first-grade reading achievement and perceptual development during a school year.

This study was undertaken to investigate the predictive value of certain tests in relationship to first grade reading success. The following predictor tests were administered to seventy first grade students during the first two weeks of school: Metropolitan Readiness Test, Naming Letters Test, Light Response Test and Matching Symbol Test. The Teacher's Reading Readiness Rating Scale was filled out by each of the seven teachers at the end of the sixth week. The Wechsler Intelignce Scale for Children was administered to each child during the fall. The seventh predictor test was computed by finding the difference in individual scores of the Light Response Test and the Matching Symbol Test.
