Urban Open Space Design for the Chinese Floating Population Community: Planning and Site Design Guidelines

Zhang, Yanting 21 December 2011 (has links)
Chinese floating population residents' underprivileged living status and intensified social tension are becoming the two major issues inside their community living settlements. The thesis research holds the position that urban open space can enhance Chinese floating population's quality of life and also contribute to the social capital within their living settlement. It is critical to create the open space system that brings great social and health benefits to the group. Literature reviews reveal floating population's characteristics such as existing and potential leisure activities and leisure places. Contemporary thinking on urban open space qualities, benefits and typologies were reviewed to determine which types of open space are of value to this population. Specific qualities and corresponding benefits of floating population community open spaces, which are closely related to the group's characteristics, are identified. Findings from the literature reviews were used to develop open space design guidelines specific to government sponsored floating population settlement areas. Planning and site design level design guidelines address social and health benefits for the floating population residents. Types of open space and their spatial distributions are identified at the planning level. At the site design level, place-based design guidelines were developed for three major open space categories: the daily use spaces around dwelling units, the streets, and the plaza/squares. Under each category, design strategies were developed to promote desirable open space qualities inside the floating population settlement area, and descriptive design objectives are proposed to achieve these qualities. The design guidelines connect the group's demographic, leisure and work characteristics to open space typologies, qualities and respective benefits, and provide recommendations for the open space design of Chinese floating population community. These design guidelines offer planners and site designers a new tool to guide planning and site design decisions of floating population community open space. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Epidemic events : state-formation, class struggle and biopolitics in three epidemic crises of modern China

Lynteris, Christos January 2010 (has links)
Based on extended research on Chinese medical and epidemiological archival material dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, and on six months of internship in epidemiology in Beijing’s Medical School and in Haidian District’s Centre of Disease Control and Prevention, this thesis explores the conjunction of three major epidemiological crises in modern Chinese history with processes of State formation: the 1911 Manchurian pneumonic plague, the 1952 germ-warfare, and the 2003 SARS outbreak. Analysing the three crises as Events in line with Alain Badiou’s epistemology it seeks to establish how different strategies of governmental fidelity to the imagined cause of each crisis have led to distinct modes of organisation and valorisation of the social: Republican China and its decline to fascism; the clash between professional revolutionaries and technocrats in Maoist China; and the emergence of the “Harmonious Society” of mass exploitation and repression today. This conjunction between State formation and epidemiological Events is explored with the use of Foucault’s genealogical method in a quest for a historical materialist approach that posits at its epicentre processes of class composition, decomposition and recomposition, and their contested enclosure by the governmental apparati of capture. The present thesis thus examines the three major epidemiological crises of modern China as forming grounds for biopolitical strategies that give rise to modes of subjectivation and circuits of debt/guilt within the context of the class struggle. And at the same time, it aims to create a new field of investigation for anthropology: the relation of State and Event, from a viewpoint that contests the accepted relation of event and structure expounded by Marshall Sahlins, proposing as the main object of this investigation the conjunction between necessity and will that can never be reduced either to the naturalism of historical determinism, nor to the culturalism of subjective contingency.

Environmental diagnosis of Prata and Catumbi rivers and the balneability of the beach: a study in Muriqui, Mangaratiba RJ.

Monique Oliveira Lopes 11 April 2014 (has links)
The uncontrolled exploration of the wather has been compromised its quality and quantity for several uses, among which the primary contact recreational usage can be highlighted. This study brings a common problem in the brazilian coast: cities that receive a high number of visitors during some periods of the year and suffer environmental crisis due the drastic change of population volume, since the floating population difficults the public input management like the water supplying, health services, waste discard and the sewerage system treatment, which can pollute these areas. Muriqui resort, a city in Mangaratiba, in Rio de Janeiro State, was chosen as a model for this study, which object was to diagnose the hydric pollution and the balneability of the beach. The methodology of the exploration was based into reviewing scientifcs publications, books and legal material and creating a sampling plan. . Besides, some municipal departaments were visited so as to collect present data about the city and, in order to confront the water analysis, an investigation of the rain history of the area was made . Aiming toverify the beach and two rivers water quality, samples were collected twice a month on mondays mornings, from september 2012 to august 2013, totalizing 25 collects. In each collect, five sampling poins were made: three points at the beach, one at Pratas river and other at Catumbi river. Physical, chemical and biological parameters were monitored, in order to compare these data with the numbers alowed by law and correlating them to verify the degradation level of the water. The results of this study demonstrate that the point of Pratas river was the most degradated, because it was the nearest point of the rivers mouth. The assessment of the beach water quality indicated that the site had excellent balneability during 96% of the monitored period, and it was improper only once. During the study some parameters show pollution promoted by domestic effluents, apparently in initial degradation.

Skildringar av kvinnliga migrantarbetare i kinesisk film : Id-kortet, oskuldsfullheten och temaparken i The world och Angels wear white / Portrayals of Female Migrant Workers in Chinese Cinema : The ID Card, Innocence and the Theme Park in The World and Angels Wear White

Cheng Herelius, Maria January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines how themes about migrant workers, especially women migrant workers are depicted in the two films The world, Shijie 世界 (2004), directed by Jia Zhangke 贾樟柯 and Angels wear white, Jianianhua 嘉年华 (2017), directed by Vivian Qu, also called Wen Yan 文言. In the background of the thesis the subjects hukou 户口, the system of household registration; the floating population, liudong renkou 流动人口, the people who are not living at the place where they are registered at, according to the hukou system and black hukou, heihu 黑户, the people who lack hukou altogether are discussed. The methods used in the thesis are a qualitative thematic analysis and semiotics. The theories that are the basis of the analysis are Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze, Emirbayer and Mische’s concept of agency and Steven Lukes’s concept of power.    The themes that are explored in this thesis are work, accommodation, the ID card and the passport, the commodification of the female body and women who are sex workers, the female virginity, violence as well as symbols and role models. Both films show that a person’s status as a migrant worker who is lacking an ID card or as a migrant worker who has their hukou elsewhere determines the living conditions of the person in China. Angels Wear White depicts how being in possession of an ID card or not affects whether you get access to healthcare, work opportunities and your housing situation. In The World poor living conditions for the migrant workers are depicted. Both films show differences between the sexes, where women are treated as object of male desire and the female body becomes an object that can be bought by means of money or services. The female’s virginity before marriage is valued greatly, which affects the young women migrants’ experiences in the film.    Some symbols that appear in the film are the white dress, that symbolizes a female ideal, the ID card and the passport that are symbols of social as well as physical mobility in Chinese society, lastly the theme park is a symbol of the dreams and desires that are being shaped in contemporary China.   Keywords: “the floating population”, “hukou”, “female migrant workers”, “The World”, “Angels Wear White” / Den här uppsatsen undersöker vilka teman kring migrantarbetare, särskilt kvinnliga migrantarbetare skildras i the två filmerna The world, Shijie, 世界 (2004), regisserad av Jia Zhangke 贾樟柯och Angels wear white, Jianianhua嘉年华 (2017), regisserad av Vivian Qu också kallade Wen Yan 文言.
