The impact of exposure to Chaozhou Xianshi music on pre-service teachers??? development as music educators

Ng, Chun-Hoi Daniel, School of Music & Music Education, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
Recent music educational reforms in Hong Kong stress the need to cultivate students??? understanding toward Chinese music. However, research indicates that Hong Kong music teachers lack sufficient confidence and valuing to teach Chinese music. Based on this background, the purpose of this study was to address the need to train teachers with the confidence and skills to teach Chinese music. An indigenous genre, Chaozhou xianshi music was introduced as a focus of study because the genre is considered to be a useful mediator for teachers and their students to understand and appreciate Chinese music. The study comprised two inter-related parts. Part I included fieldwork in xianshi music, semi-structured interviews with xianshi musicians and literature review that investigated the theory, teaching and learning of xianshi and Chinese music. Based on the findings of Part I, Part II involved a Pilot and Main Study that were designed to trial a pre-service teacher education programme at the Hong Kong Institute of Education that would prepare trainees to undertake the teaching of xianshi and Chinese music. A xianshi music ensemble was formed to expose the trainees to practical experiences of the genre. During their final teaching practice session, the trainees were asked to design and teach xianshi and Chinese music in schools. Qualitative data were collected from interviews and an analysis of video-recordings of their teaching. Findings revealed that a sequenced exposure in xianshi music was advantageous for the trainees to develop their potential and competence to teach Chinese music, as was evident in these trainees??? teaching approaches and implementation. Findings suggest that Hong Kong music teachers should adopt the techniques proposed in this study. Importantly, music teachers should demonstrate their role as transmitters of musical heritage and be capable to design and implement effective lessons, to involve their students to practical experiences in traditional Chinese music, and to develop their students intellectually and artistically so that they become informed consumers of their own and other musical traditions. In the long run, these approaches may help to increase the valuing of Chinese music and culture among students and citizens in the society more generally.

A portfolio of music compositions. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2012 (has links)
The works included in this portfolio represent my continual effort to develop a solution for my search for an expression of my Chinese influences. I focus mainly on three aspects: the unique timbre of Chinese instruments, the intimacy of a small traditional Chinese music ensemble, and the spontaneity of individual performers. I attempt to include these three elements into my work while retaining an expressive quality that I find to be common in Chinese literature. The three works presented in this portfolio are my continual attempts to develop these ideas into a way of expression. / The first work in the portfolio, "Rummage through the Crimson", explores the unique timbre of huqin. The instrumentation (three erhus and one zhonghu) allows me to search for difference within a homogenous texture and thus to discover the timbral nuance available. I also experiment with a notation that at the same time allows freedom and requires cooperation among performers to create a cohesive and natural ensembleship. / The second work, "Slashes of Frost and Wind", extends the experimentation of notation to a greater scale. While using an ensemble of Chinese instruments, I try to utilize the freedom allowed by the notation to unleash the innate creativity of the performers and to evoke the improvisatory nature of their traditional playing. On the other hand, I explore the use of extended techniques while respecting the instrument's natural capabilities. / In "Flower Burial under a Pallid Moon", I attempt to transfer the findings from "Slashes of Frost and Wind" to a purely Western context, in the hopes of creating a piece of music that express Chinese elements while using Western instruments, so as to expand the expressive possibilities of such an ensemble. Many technical elements have been brought over, namely sensitivity to timbral nuance, improvisatory nature of the notation, and close cooperation while in a state of performance freedom. More suggestive descriptions are added to guide the performers in improvisatory passages. Most importantly, I retain a Chinese imagery that runs through the veins of all these three works. In essence, the technical attempts here merely try to approach a succinct expression of my Chinese influence. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Ting, Chung Wai. / Thesis (M.Mus.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Electronic reproduction. The Influence of Chinese Folk and Instrumental Music on Tcherepnin's "Chinese mikrokosmos": A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, C. Debussy, S. Rachmaninoff, D. Shostakovich, and Others

Luo, Yeou-Huey 08 1900 (has links)
One of the most important compositional theories of Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977), Russian-American composer and pianist, is the Eurasian ideology, which was a result of the influence of Eastern culture. Inspired by this theory, Tcherepnin not only extricated himself from his own compositional techniques, but also intensified his search for musical folklore. In April, 1934, he began a world tour which was to include China, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Egypt, and Palestine, to search for "musical folklore." He became so fascinated with the culture of ancient China that he cancelled the rest of his arrangements, and, except for visits to Japan, he remained in China for three years, until the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in July, 1937. During his three-year stay in China, Tcherepnin was greatly attracted to Chinese culture, and as a result, Chinese culture influenced his music to a significant degree. This essay examines the manner in which Tcherepnin's music was influenced by his experiences in China. In order to precisely analyze the close affiliation between Chinese musical elements and Tcherepnin's "Chinese Mikrokosmos," many original Chinese sources proved indispensable in this study. These sources include Chinese folk music, theater music, instrumental music, religious music, and Chinese periodicals and newspapers that reported Tcherepnin's activities in China (1934-7). The organization of this dissertation as follows: Chapter I provides a brief biographical sketch of Tcherepnin, traces his activities in China, and introduces one of his greatest "Chinese" compositions, "Chinese Mikrokosmos," which represents the fruits of his labors to scrutinize and absorb Chinese musical language. Chapters II and III are devoted to exploring how Chinese folk and instrumental music inspired Tcherepnin's "Chinese Mikrokosmos." Chapter IV summarizes this study.
