Marinho, Bruna Ramos. January 2004 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to make the production of "other" ways of thinking over education of foreign language teachers possible. We intend to construct non-conventional contexts of research, in which the professionals can think over their language learning/teaching experiences. For that, we are based methodologically on the Educational Research based on Arts (Eisner, 1991) whose chief resource is the dramatic performance, called Patterns in Analysis. Such performance was built from themes inspired in the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais. Ten performances were acted in several public and private institutions of education in the State of São Paulo. On the stage, everyday scenes and the pedagogical work of foreign language teachers were acted artistically, such as, their conflicts and professional dilemmas. After the performance, a critical reflection shared by the audience composed by teachers, teachers' professors and students took place. The performance and the reflection compose what Foucault (Deleuze, 1988) considers as a device. To the philosopher, devices are machines of making see and speak. They constitute a theoretical instrument that we use to analyze the social experiences that happen at schools. The reflections arisen by the teachers indicate a discordance from what teachers and students have been passing through a process of modification in their experiences and, from what some researches, educational policies and the operation of the institutional structure of the school propose. / Mestre

Effects of a study abroad teacher training program on the language, identity, affect, and intercultural competence of Korean teachers of English

Choe, Yoonhee 05 July 2012 (has links)
This study investigated the linguistic, affective, and intercultural outcomes of a four-week study abroad program for Korean teachers of English offered through a U.S. southwestern university. In an effort to understand better what the 42 participants experienced during their study abroad, mixed methods including quantitative and qualitative data analysis, were used. To measure the participants‟ linguistic development, pretest and posttest measures of Listening, Reading, Structure, Speaking, and Writing were administered by the study abroad program. Also, participants responded to Self- Assessment questionnaires developed by the National Language Service Corps that asked them to assess the degree to which their reading, speaking, and listening had improved. The participants‟ daily journal entries were collected throughout the program, and some of the participants were interviewed at the beginning, at the middle, and at the end of the program on a volunteer basis. For the quantitative data analysis, the pretest and posttest scores of each measure were statistically compared by using MANOVA with follow-up ANOVA tests. Except for the reading scores, the other four measures showed significant improvement from pretest to posttest. For the Self-Assessment questionnaire, most participants checked only a few items as having improved. Interestingly, a few perceived that they had become less able to do some of the listening and speaking items over the program. These findings can be explained as resulting from overestimation before this program or as a result of increase in self-monitoring processes during the program. Through the constant comparison method (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), four themes emerged from analysis of the qualitative data. First, many participants were motivated to improve their English proficiency and increase authentic contacts with local people, with various sources shaping their motivation. Second, they increased their awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the United States and Korea. Third, some participants showed a feeling of resistance to the dominant culture represented by native English-speaking instructors of the program. Fourth, at the end of the program, many showed improved intercultural competence. Results provide some theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, and policy implications for study abroad researchers, participants, and program instructors. / text

Teaching reading to E.F.L. (English as a foreign language) Vietnamese students at the Hanoi Foreign Language Teachers College (HNFLTC)

Hoang, Cong Thuy, n/a January 1985 (has links)
Chapter 1 introduces the aims and objectives of the study. It is followed by an analysis of the present situation at the Hanoi Foreign Language Teachers College and the problems encountered by teachers and administrators in ensuring the maximum efficiency of the EFL programme. The Report continues by asking a number of pertinent questions about the methodology and techniques used in the teaching of reading. This, in turn, is linked with theoretical considerations which the writer examines at some length taking into account numerous issues about language processing, cognition, expectation and motivation, comprehending, discourse analysis, text cohesion and so on. Attention is then focused on the reader and the environment in which he operates. In addition the reading lesson comes under scrutiny and procedures, as well as material selection and teaching systems are discussed. Finally the writer attempts to make suggestions to his colleagues in the EFL field based on his own experience and convictions.

Exploring characteristics of effective Arabic language teachers

Ahmad, Azza Mokhtar 01 June 2011 (has links)
This study explored the learning experience of Arabic language learners at the college level, focusing on their perception of effective and ineffective Arabic language teachers as well as the influence of their experiences on their motivation. The study also attempted to shed some light on the nature of the teacher-student interaction within the current sociopolitical context. The 29 students who agreed to participate in this study were all Arabic language learners enrolled in the second year or higher of Arabic at a major university in the United States. Data were collected from multiple sources including an open-ended survey and semi-structured interviews that were conducted on a one-on-one basis with the participants. Data were analyzed using coding procedures suggested by Strauss and Corbin (1998) from a grounded theory qualitative approach. Results indicated that participants perceived their effective Arabic language teachers as adaptable teachers. These adaptable teachers influence learners' learning outcomes by balancing their high expectations of their students with an awareness of language learning needs. Moreover, participants' perceptions of their best Arabic learning experiences were always associated with adaptable teachers, whose positive interaction style radiated throughout in their teaching. The data indicated that participants were intrinsically motivated in four different ways: (1) intrinsic motivation for the linguistic aspects of Arabic, (2) intrinsic motivation for knowledge, (3) intrinsic motivation for optimal experience, and (4) intrinsic motivation for accomplishment. Moreover, motivation constructs such as expectancy-value, self-efficacy, and flow were related to the students' experiences. According to many students, the more years they spent in learning Arabic, the more they had become obsessed with it. Most participants in this study credited both native and non-native speakers as effective language teachers.. Participants credited their native teachers for their linguistic knowledge and their in-depth understanding of the Arabic culture and described them as resourceful. At the same time, they credited non-native teachers for their pedagogical knowledge, organizational skills, and knowledge of learners' characteristics, and described them as role models. Suggestions for future research and implications for research and practice are discussed. / Not available / text

Por uma prática reflexiva no ensino de línguas estrangeiras: saberes e diálogos / For a reflective practice on the teaching of foreign languages: knowledge and dialogue

Oliveira, Renilson Santos 07 June 2010 (has links)
This thesis was conceived as an instrument for the study of the practice of in-service foreign language teachers in Sergipe state. Although considerable emphasis was placed on practice, theory was not neglected, since it is a constitutive and indispensable part of the teaching practice. For this empirical research critical collaborative action research was conducted with three foreign language teachers of Spanish, English and French. The results indicated the emergence of new attitudes by these teachers and by other people involved in education as far as the achievement of a more critical and emancipatory teaching practice is concerned, thus bringing forth a teacher who researches his/her own practice and inaugurating the paradigm of the reflective teacher.

RELAÇÕES ENTRE PRÁTICA DOCENTE E COMPETÊNCIA LINGUÍSTICO-COMUNICATIVA: A PERSPECTIVA DOS PRÓPRIOS PROFESSORES / RELATIONS BETWEEN TEACHING PRACTICE AND LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE-COMMUNICATIVE: THE PERSPECTIVE OF OWN TEACHERS

Padilha, Emanuele Coimbra 06 February 2015 (has links)
This work aimed at investigating the relations between teaching practice and Language-communicative competence of Spanish Foreign Language teachers from the public school, through the inference of their beliefs. Therefore, we identified the beliefs about linguistic and communicative competence of teachers and, as a result, these beliefs were related to their performance reported by the participants themselves in the classroom. The participants of this study were two Spanish teachers, working in public schools in Santa Maria city, who performed the initial training in Letters-Spanish graduation at the Federal University of Santa Maria. The methodology used was a qualitative study of case, based on metacognitive approach beliefs research (BARCELOS, 2001). We applied a questionnaire to answer the main purpose. Secondly, a semi-structured interview was made. The results showed that these teachers believe Linguistic competence communicative is characterized by complementarity of linguistic and communicative component. This division into two components still carries a structuralist notion that considers the linguistic part precedes and prevails on the communications components and also that this is a belief that may have been caused by the influence of the nomenclature linguistic and communicative competence, by Almeida Filho (1993), adopted in this study. In relation to teaching practice reported by the teachers, it was found that the beliefs presented by the participants directly influence on performance. Thus, we concluded that the insufficient linguistic and communicative competence of the teacher leads to severe limitations in educational performance in relation to the oral performance.

This dissertation investigates teachers’ beliefs about the implementation of the Currículo Mínimo (CM) of Foreign Languages (FL), analyzing if and how their beliefs interfere in their teaching practices. The theoretical support for the investigation of beliefs came mainly from Abrahão (2006), Barcelos (2007) and Silva (2010). The research also investigates the relations between power and discourse, using as reference studies by Foucault (2004) as well as by several scholars identified with the theories and methods of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). And, since the CM was based upon the theories of discursive genres, this dissertation also includes a brief presentation of the studies by Marcuschi (2003) and Schneuwly & Dolz (2004). Brazilian official documents concerning curricular policies, such as the Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação (BRASIL, LDB, 1996), the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (BRASIL, PCN, 1998, 1999) and the Orientações Curriculares do Ensino Médio (BRASIL, OCEM, 2006), were take into consideration as well. Obviously, the Currículo Mínimo of the Secretaria de Educação do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (RIO DE JANEIRO, CM, 2011, 2012) is presented and discussed, since the analysis of how it is implemented is one of the goals of this research. For the data analysis, we created a few categories which helped infer the beliefs of the informants as to the implementation of the CM, its mandatory character, the discursive genres established as syllabus by the document, the social context of the students, and, finally, the images that teachers create of their pupils as learners of the FL. We concluded that teachers’ beliefs interfered directly in lesson planning and in the way the plans were developed in the classroom, as well as in their perception of the CM. In spite of believing that their teaching practices were modified due to their experiences, the informants keep on adopting traditional approaches, methods and techniques, such as word translation and deductive teaching of grammar rules. On the other hand, disregarding of how they conceive their lessons, the informants agree that both reflection upon and rebuilding of their practices is necessary, in order to contribute to the education of critical and active students. The interaction with both other people and the context is essential not only to the education of the student within the school, but also for his or her education as a conscious, critical citizen

An exercise in how experienced expatriate EFL teachers' practical wisdom can be used to problematise Saudi Arabian ELC syllabi

Sharkey, Garry January 2014 (has links)
In the past 30 years there has been a steady and growing appreciation in the literature of the importance and value of teachers' practical wisdom (TPW) - or phronesis as it is also known - to further an understanding of classroom practice and of the need to find ways to help teachers generate and share their perspectives with others. Nevertheless, the potential of this kind of knowledge (understood by Aristotle to be both practical and moral in its orientation) to contribute valuable insights to educational debates has still to be realised. Rather, educational decisions about policy and practice in many contexts (whether at a national or institutional level) are still largely driven by theoretical and technical knowledge perspectives and teacher practical wisdom perspectives are still often under-valued and remain under-represented in educational literature. One of the main reasons for this put forward in this thesis is the tendency in much of the literature to see this form of knowledge as classroom bound rather than to realise the ways in which it can inform broader pedagogical discussions. Bearing all of the above in mind, the aim of the study reported in this thesis into the TPW of 14 experienced expatriate English as a foreign language teachers (EEEFLTs) working in English language centres (ELCs) across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is threefold. Its first aim is to provide a platform for the EEEFLTs to demonstrate the contribution their TPW can potentially make in addressing syllabus related issues in the KSA ELCs they have worked and, in doing so, show how the use of TPW is not confined to the classroom. Its second aim is to increase the visibility of the participants' TPW and thus raise awareness of the importance of research into TPW and to provide a model for how this can be conducted. The study's final aim is to provide a deeper understanding of the nature of TPW. Located in the interpretive paradigm, this study uses a TPW-friendly methodology to investigate TPW: interpretive phronetic educational research (IPER), which approaches and conducts educational research through a moral and practical problem-driven lens. This understanding drives the study's methodology and all stages of its data collection and analysis and the methods used in both. The goal of such methods is an epistemological one to generate TPW whilst empowering it also by highlighting its validity and how it is easily articulated - and thus captured - and not confined to the classroom. To assist with its articulation and capture, the study employs a process defined as Problematisation: a four-stage process consisting of reflection, problematisation, deliberation and articulation which drives and shapes the semi-structured interviews the study employs and the secondary research questions that inform the primary research question. The study concludes that the EEEFLTs use their TPW as a lens (that has 12 qualities) through which to view KSA ELC syllabi and, in doing so, identify many problems with the syllabi and subsequent consequences and suggest solutions to address both. These problems, consequences and solutions have been organised under six prominent categories that represent six main problem areas to emerge from the data that suggest the syllabi are teacher, textbook and test-centred, top-down, teacher-proof and time-driven. These categories represent six problem areas that in turn reflect the problematic, negative and disempowering context from which the data informing such categories and themes have been drawn. In this study, TPW is considered disempowered knowledge as a result of the disempowering context within which it has been acquired and is used. Previous TPW studies have been conducted in more positive settings and have perhaps for this reason not focused on TPW's disempowerment. In contrast, this study takes on a much more political role as it explores TPW's disempowerment in the KSA ELC context as well as in the broader context of academia and the literature. TPW's lack of visibility in TESOL and education has several implications because unless TPW achieves greater visibility, it may fade into extinction and its potential may never be realised. This study has been conducted in an attempt to prevent this happening.
